Jimmy Diresta here, / jimmydiresta l got this broken gas drill last year from youtuber hand tool rescue asking if l could get it to run, well we kinda got it but was still having problems, since then another youtuber sent a mini gen set that has the same engine, lets see what is wrong by taking the both of them apart to see what was wrong on the drill.

Hand tool rescue or save the engine for a modeler to put back onto an old airplane. These things are just too cool to destroy maybe even in drill form if you feel that way lol

I have a '78 Honda Goldwing with a mechanical fuel pump that developed a crack in the rubber diaphragm (which is very similar to this diaphragm). Since all the check valves are on the wet side of the pump, I cut a new nitrile diaphragm and placed it on top of the old diaphragm (on the wet side). I used a new Nitrile glove (one of the blue ones) and used the palm area since that was just big enough without any stretching needed.
Works as it should now and it was one of those moments where I amazed myself. A very simple fix and even ten years later, no further problems.

I feel mustie deserves the generator more than myself. After all his commitment to the community, and assist the repair of the drill, least I can do is provide a special gift.
It will basically sit on my garage pedestal, and nothing disturbs me more than an engine that works.....doesn't gets their exercise or serve their purpose.
Mustie will provide a better life for it and will bring in joy.........as long as it runs at least lol.

Mini footnotes on the generator:
It produces 300 watts of power at full load, some say 350 but 300 is their sweet spot before damaging the generator.
It has a 12v hookup via wingnuts at the back. It creates up to 12amps according to the manual.
12v hookup and 120v plug can be used both simultaneously as long as it wont overload the system. DO NOT REVERSE THE POLARITY OF THE 12V CONNECTION OR DAMAGE WILL OCCUR!
The diodes will blow, and the generator will be compromised.
Adjusting the fuel mix and governor is to be set after the engine warms up and the specified load is applied. There will never be a set adjustment, only adjustment will be set by ear (running smoothly). Off load running will be high or choppy and stated it is normal. Dont touch it unless a different load is made.
There is no info on set RPM or Hertz since the adjustment is made by ear at their specified load of 250-300 watts. I'm sure it supposed to be 60hz, but judging the sound of engine, its definitely turning more than 3600rpm.
The carb fuel pump system utilizes a small port after the throttle butterfly. When it is closed, the pulses from the intake transfer through that internal port which goes through a series of chambers to the diaphragm. Then the check balls and the special check valve gasket does the one way fueling to the metering valve. Then it goes out to the hole before the butterfly.
This design is recreated on newer ryobi/ troybilt 4 cycle engines like their blower and trimmers. You'll notice their walbro carbs do NOT have a pulse hole like your generic carbs do to function the fuel pump. They get their pulse from the vaccuum of the intake after the butterfly ( or barrel on their walbro).
Only difference was on walbro 4 stroke, they have a spring on their diaphragm to push back after the absence of vaccuum.
Since this is a 2 stroke, ohlsson/rice carbs pulses with vac and blow so no spring was needed. It moves the diaphragm normally.....hence their compact and crude design.
They are inefficient on today's terms and definitely not EPA friendly but who cares, it is a badass rare little machine.

I'm so happy to see her on the spotlight. It was revving high since I set it that way, might be too high lol sowwie.
And the fuel mix was definitely lean since it was last set last summer here in Florida lol, again sowwie.
But I'm surprised it gave alot of pulls to start but I'm very happy to hear her properly.
EDIT* Now I see why, that diaphragm was terrible. I received it as is, the carb pieces are all original from my prior ownership. I just clean it and it ran so I left it alone.*
Awesome video as usual, enjoy your newly acquired piece of history. I made sure at least the spark was there, I cleaned/adjusted the points as per spec on the pullstart cover. And it did ran prior shipping but....again Florida setting lol.
PS: 40:1 is very, very lean. They LOVE and NEED oil. 25:1 is good. If you dont see oil out the exhaust, it is not enough lol.
EDIT #2: @Mustie1, I totally forgot one special info. I forgot to send you a set of leads to the alligator clips. You see those two wingnuts at the end of the generator ?
That is for 12volts. It charges car batteries :) I have not tested that feature so put a meter on it prior.

Hey Mustie1, here's a method for cutting the holes in thin material like: Find a piece of brass or copper tube that is close the the same size as the screw or hole and use a rotory-tool cone style grinding bit to sharpen the inside of one end of the tube then use the tube as a hole punch.
That's the cutest little gas-powered electric generator I've ever seen~!
Hi Mustie, If you find the material used for the gasket, get yourself a small laser cutter/engraver, this would allow you to cut your own complex gaskets. With regards rejuvenating the old gasket, try 303 Aerospace Protectant spray, soak it in that for a while, as it's designed for vinyls and rubber etc.

Seeing that gas drill brought back memories! Linemen use them to frame an inaccessible pole! I can tell you that gas drills are a mixed bag of emotions, sometimes. Ours never had the primer button, but they either want to work, or not at all! I kept a brace & bit handy, just in case!

My Dad worked for the local power company and they bought 3 of these which said “DRILLGINE” on them. They bought them for the linemen to use in bucket trucks. They never started so the guys did not use them. We wound up with one that was going to be scrapped. We got it working but you couldn’t depend on it. They thing was so small things were always going wrong with it. It was 2 cycle. I’d like to send you a picture of the go cart my dad built for me 52 years ago. Just needs cleanup and a throttle cable.

That's how hand power tools should be made - no faffing around for 16 hours while the battery charges up, or the battery dies four holes from the finish. Just fuel it up and you're away again in a minute! . . . Got to say, I do like that "Tiny Tiger" generator. I could just imagine that in the back of a pick-up, and spending a week in a mountain cabin, using it to power the lights, perhaps a radio, and finally, recharge the pick-up battery because we left the interior light on when we parked it!
We don't make things like we used to, that's for sure!

Back before cordless drills, these were what we used out in the field to inspect utility poles. Pain in the arse!

I have always used rubber gasket sheets to make my own diafram. Dont know about there in USA, but here in Norway we can get like A4 size sheets of rubber gasket material for 4-10$ for 2ps of A4 size sheets.

Mustie, not sure if another one of the 486 commenters below mentioned this product for the rubber gasket. Rawn Re-Grip Rubber Cleaner & Revitalizer. Excellent product. Readily available on-line and not super expensive. A little bit goes a long way. Worth it for future projects, if you’re interested. Great work!

I have a little nemesis myself, sits on the shelf above my bench.... a cute little very lightweight leaf blower with a 24 cc engine, fully rebuilt carb but only runs if bottle fed. It's annoying as hell but I just can't throw it away, yet.

Get the raw diaphragm material from Mcmaster Carr and make a small run of carb kits for these carbs. Model airplane types would love you! Try the Silicone oil / spray to soften up the stiff old diaphragms. That was really good advice in those earlier comments!

I learned the hard way, the Mylar flap-valve membranes go on the embossed side of the assembly, and the gasket goes on the machined smooth side. I misread witness marks while reassembling a Husqvarna demo saw carb and ended up with a no-start and a fuel leak. I had to backtrack to the beginning and analyze every part as it went back together. Talk about a learning experience!
Yeah, as someone who watched the other videos on this drill very recently, you should have scrolled through them to refresh yourself. By the way, I remember on HTR's video, he has some documentation along with the drill that I guess he didn't send you. Might have shown a breakdown of that pump. Love your content. I've learned so much.

I may never work on small engines like these (Famous last words), but the trouble shooting techniques that you use are critical to working in any gas engine. Spark, fuel, carburetor, and compression. Simple timesaving steps, like using a separate magnet bowl for each carburetor and trying to make a gasket are second nature to you, but foreign to me. Thanks for posting. I always learn from your videos

I think that the problems we are witnessing with these is the main reason why the concept never caught on. There seems to be a limitation with engines of this size that corresponds to reliability, ease of use and the trouble with locomotion. Ferrying fuel along with this and the quirky nature made running electric to a location to power a conventional drill a no brainer. I appreciate the challenge and the effort to get it to go, but if we really needed something like this to work and we spent this much time and got it going for a little while and then went home and came back the next day and were back to square one, I think most of us would say screw it and buy a mile worth of extension cords.

Ok, I just watched all 3 of your video's Mustie1......and also the one from Hand Tool Rescue......in my opinion HTR put the carb back together with the clear flapper check valve on the wrong side of the spacer and you inherited it that way......until you had a second donor unit which ran a small generator to make comparisons and came to the realization that the clear flapper check valve needed to be on the proper side of the spacer for the system to work.......excellent project, really enjoy your video's.....keep up the good work fine sir.
Have to mic the thickness, but McMaster carries Buna-N (oil resistant) rubber sheet as thin as 1/32" (0.031 inch).
I ordered some and it's not the same. You need fiber-reinforced Buna-N sheets. I finally found some on eBay!

I love watching you work on this stuff. Most would just toss it because they don't have the paitence to even try to fix it. Obviously that's not an issue with you. Brings back memories of a Cyclemaster Mustie - long ago. Standard was just under 1 BHP but being 17 and in an engineering apprentiship it got tweeked. I made a simple rope break dyno and got about 2.2 BHP at 10,000 RPM. The unit fitted inside the rear wheel of a bike. Standard was 300 MPG. Mine was a lot less MPGand broke 2 frames off under the saddle. It was quite normal for the flywheel to shear it's woodruff key and come off. In the winter, early morning and still dark a short cut to work took me along woodland footpaths. Later I had motorbikes that would do a ton but nothing scared the cr*p out of me like that Cyclemaster. Good days. Thanks for the memory.
Silicone baking sheets You lay them on the bottom of baking pans. ( Sold at the Dollar General store) Or silicone exercise bands
Mostly used for physical rehab therapy. They have different thicknesses & that would be perfect!

The generator is the cutest little thing I've ever seen. I wonder if it's DC? Although it has a household plug on it, I wouldn't put it past outputting DC since that's all you need for incandescent lamps and tools with universal motors.

My son came up with one of those Tiny Tiger generators back when he was in high school. I don't think he ever got it running, something was broken. It is neat to see one running.

It's a miracle these condensers still work. The condenser is just a metal bodied capacitor. At one time, capacitors were known as condensers and the moniker has stuck in engines. Presumably they are ceramic or something.
