    I don't know which sound I like better... the sound of a small engine roaring to life, or the "Mustie-Chuckle" when it does! I think you know by now that all of us Mustie1 fans consider a 38 minute video to be "just a snippet" when it comes to your highly entertaining and informative productions! I've said it before: your videos set the standard for 'bring'em back to life', and should be required course study for anyone else who does this sort of YouTubing... Thanks for posting!

    My father had the dealership for Homeowners in the early sixties thru the late sixties. He had a snow blower like this in the early sixties. It didn't look like. Much, but it beat shoveling. Homeowners was bought out by AMF in the mid sixties. They made a very good snow blower but poor lawn mowers. In the mid sixties they changed the design to a modern two stage and sold them thru numerous outlets, including Sears. I still have a later model that I bought in 1973. Runs like a champ, has cleared a lot of snow with minor repairs. Thanks for the video, brought up a lot of memories!

  • @basmajianmiscellany113
    @basmajianmiscellany113 2 года назад +12

    Mustie, this brings back such good memories. I was given one of these by a colleague to restore / get running back in the late 1980's. He told me that he saw one of these in former Presidential candidate Michael Dukakis' garage when he was being interviewed! I was living in Connecticut at the time so there was plenty of opportunity to try it out once I got it running. While a small machine those steel wheels would drive it into and through anything; it would bury itself. The chute is a bit of a joke. It would throw ok in one direction and half as much the other way. Regardless this thing is AWESOME. I gave it away (running of course as a 2nd back-up machine to 2 other restorations) when I moved to NC. Thanks for all you do on this channel ... love every video.

    I've worked on this style of B&S engine a lot, the 3 (and give or take .5 hp) has the back air "tin" cast as part of the block, while the 5 (and give or take .5 hp) tin was held to the drive side of the block with a 1/4" bolt like what holds the points cover under the flywheel, and the screen onto the starter clutch. You're right about how we've changed, they didn't have to give many instructions about safety because back in that day people had common sense and knew not to put their body parts in danger by getting too close to rapidly moving sharp objects.

    • @flick22601
      @flick22601 2 года назад +14

      Well Dave, it appears that a lot pf people 'back in that day' didn't have common sense and hurt and killed themselves on the machinery. That's what forced the government to step in and force them to include safety features. It's sad in my opinion because I really love seeing the old iron.

    30+ years ago I inherited a single stage snow thrower from my brother in law. He had bought it around 1962 when he and my oldest sister got married. The leading edge was worn down so I welded in a new one along with new bearings for the auger shaft and replaced the drive chain. It had a simple chute that just flipped side to side. It would really beat you up with the vibration and no power drive and made out of 16 gage metal it was heavy too.

    I am kinda shocked you didn't recognize the standard 6 to 1 gearbox that B&S sold on motors to emulate the old hit-miss engine rpm which was right around 600 rpm. There was a lot of good old gear that was re-powered with these. And some new of course. I have seen them on mortar and cement mixers. I bet the wheels have a ratchet posi drive...I am guessing before you get to that. Some early rider mowers had those.

      I had one exactly like the one in the video way back in the 80's. Also had one that was similar to this one except it was originally black (I think - lots of "patina"), had a more conventionally rotating chute and was marketed by Sears. It had a broken main drive shaft and I had to get the local tech school to machine me a new one. Dug them both out of the back of an old farmers work shop. Kinda wish now I'd kept them. They were hard working little machines.

    Funny how things have changed over time for the safety aspects of machinery over time.
    As usual Mustie1 has given us a Sunday morning revival video ( at least for now for the motor). I will be waiting as usual for the next video in the saga of Mustie1 and his workshop from the great north all the way down here in central Florida where it hasn't snowed since 1977.
    Hey Mustie1 how bout a tour of the shop showing updates of the projects you have worked on in the past. The old Ford, Vw's, kit car, kubota, etc.

    Ours was a gray Chraftsman. It had about 3hp Briggs. Direct drive from the engine to the prop. The lever only gave you drive and neutral. It was a bear to start cold. Put a 1/2 inch hole on the rear of the drum or the water will freeze. The drive chain I think was metric as it was not common. It was a great novelty.

    Oh my goodness, I had one of those as a kid. My neighbor gave it to me; I remember the cover. Spent a week getting it running, and used it for many years till I could afford a new one. Still have the engine sitting in my garage. It could throw snow along ways, as long as you wanted sideways.

    Thats one wicked looking snow blower. I had one that had a narrow scoop type auger that would throw the snow pretty far. It was a 1960's or early 70's and HEAVY as all get out. It had a Briggs with the older type carburetor that I learned to hate as the top of the carburetor bowl would warp and leak. I learned using two gaskets fixed the issue. I have never come across that style blower and honestly do not hope to ever deal with one. The older snow blowers were beasts and wore you out just wrestling them around.

    • @tarstarkusz

      This style of snowblower is used on trains when they have to go through the snow. There is video on youtube of trains with one of these snowblowers attached to the locomotive in the 50s. I don't know if they still use this type, but they did. I almost never see trains and what trains I do see are commuter trains.

    1962. Looks like a very old design. My Dad had a snow bird with a 2 1/2 engine and it was much newer than this. Those wheels are a dealbreaker on asphalt! Problem with my Dads snowblower was the float would always get stuck. It would stop running halfway through the job. He would clean it and adjust it and it would be ok for awhile then die. Mom and I got Dad a John Deere in 85. I still have it and my Ariens. Love to see if that Homko can actually move snow.

      My parents bought a 8 HP two stage Snow Bird in the 60’s. That thing was a tank! Weighed a ton. Took a very hefty pull to start that thing, and often flooded when starting, but when it was running you could chew through any snowbank.

Still any machinery that has sat for a period of time brings a smile when we hear those first splutters of life it drives the incentive to move on. I was so invested in watching the video it felt like 10 mins Max and even with your cuts it was 38 mins. Now I'm waiting just to see if it all functions and another old Tractor so cool.

      When I work for Sears many years ago we sold a similar model under the Craftsman. The catalog number was 8217 that was back in the sixties. We did sell a lot of them and the were self propelled You are right it was eighteen cut. The steel wheel did not cause any problems to the driveway He sure was a very rugged machine
      Sears at that time put a Briggs engine I think it was 3 HP
