I heard from a couple of Korean reactors that there is a cultural reference which Western viewers would not know to the scene where Mi-nyeo (212) kills herself and Deok-su (101).
This is the story about Non-gae, who was a woman of great beauty, an iconic figure from Jinju and married to a high ranking official. During the Japanese invasion of Korea, the Japanese captured Jinju and Non-gae's husband was killed. Celebrating their victory, Japanese generals hosted a party with gisaeng (Korean female entertainers ), Non-gae was a professional gisaeng herself so attended the party where she got her revenge. She purposely seduced the Japanese general that killed her husband and lured him to a cliff. She embraced him firmly by interlocking her fingers around his back, then threw herself off the cliff and into a river, killing them both. Her courageous act is celebrated and taught in school as an iconic patriotic tale about a low caste woman sacrificing her life to help a country in crisis.
So this story gives some context to Mi-nyeo's character.
Mi-nyeo ( translates to beautiful woman in Korean) may be actually be called this in connection with Non-gae, who is described as a woman of great beauty.
Not only does Mi-nyeo kill Deok-su for her personal revenge but can also be seen as an act for in order to eliminate the 'common enemy' ( Deok-su ).
The scene makes us as viewers realize that Mi-nyeo is actually a woman of courage and integrity in comparison to Deok-su who proves to be cowardly and selfish to the end.
Their name is Alexandra and Emily Oleson ...I did learn some good insights from them that would be missed or unknown by non Koreans...
    🙂

I think Sang-Woo saw the old man as a liability from the start and didn't tell about the umbrella because he was hoping the old man would pick it. And after that he had no opportunity to warn Gi-Hun without making people question him.

The human statues really make sense when you consider the objectification that the VIPs do to humanity.
They have reduced living human beings to game pieces, to be gambled on and discarded with as little thought as when you discard a captured chess piece. These super-rich "VIPs" view we average people as nothing more than toys, unworthy of any type of empathy.

Let this sink in for all the SANG WOO haters, he is the reason Gi-han survive Game 1, Game 3, and Game 5. in Game 1, he gave a hint on how the game works, motivating Gi-han to move, Game 3, people always give credits to oh-ilnam in that game, but his strategy only works for a few seconds and then failed, yet almost no one gives credit to sang woo even tough he's the one who came up with a new strategy on the spot, that actually made them win the tag of war, Game 5, if sang woo didn't push the glass maker, they would have wasted their time in the glass bridge and they all die, it might look like a dirty move, but it's a do or die situation. at this point of the series everyone already have blood on their hands, ever since game 3.

There's a spectrum of response when it comes to being subjected to inhuman conditions. For example, Gihun was highly traumatized by the game, one could even say before the games, his gambling was a trauma response to watching his friend die during the factory strike being broken. On the other end is Sang woo, who flinches when Ali is executed but is otherwise pretty capable of suppressing his remorse by telling himself "it's kill or be killed." Sangwoo's greater moral flexibility within the game parallels nicely his competitive nature in the outside world, where he made risky bets with other people's money and even mortgaged his mother's business in order to get ahead because capitalism taught him "it's kill or be killed."
As the other commenter says, we all like to think we'd be better, and i think that's ok. Maybe a lot of us are Sangwoo, but we can watch this show and see the nobility behind Jiyung, and just maybe let art gently embolden the humanity that our world so desperately neerds.

What do you mean "why did they keep her alive?" Because she was singled out and had no partner to play with in the last game. Plain and simple, there was no rule saying they would get killed for not having a partner in the game. They kept her alive so she can play in the next game. He did not lose his id he just left it on the body and Sang-Woo didn't have kids, you need to pay more attention when nothing on screen was confusing. Also It's not wrong to hate Sang-Woo.
