My opinion is that if there's anything at all a beginner needs to do first (as part of the contact phase) it is to learn to bend your wrist back as indicated in this video. This is the key component to putting a good spin on the ball that you can use from anywhere on the court. Excellent video Andor!
If you like this Video checkout this video: ruclips.net/video/EIhhMIby2bY/видео.html In it I do a 11 minute review on someone spiking technique and compare it to some of the best hitters in the world.
BIG thanks Andor, No one ever showed me the proper technique to hitting, so before your looking at your video i had all kinds of timing issues with contacting the ball due to the way i drew my hand and elbow back. But now that's a thing of a past and i've improved a great deal as a volleyball player. PS. The way you broke everything down step by step was awesome. Much thanks!
Hi Mr. Andor! Congratulations for your tutorial. I´m a medicin student, and in college we have a team, most of the guys are just players, little had god bases of volleyball. Thanks for the video, ´cause my Coach noticed that I´m not reaching out my arm. And I´ve been difficulties to spiking and hitting. So, I´ll try your video.
48 and still play twice a week, crushing balls. My son is now 16, and the best player in the 10 local schools as a sophomore. Please keep telling me low elbow is better. You can suffer from baseball elbow injuries and I will keep hitting sharp angle. 😂
Wow, this video has corrected 6 years of doing the wrong motions in only 6 minutes. Thanks for putting this up! This is exactly the kind of precise instruction I was looking for.
He is very right many people do spike how he described it i never noticed this, but great video very informative im going to try and spike the correct way now
How can I practice timing my approach so I hit the ball at the optimum moment? I can do it when setting to myself, but not when receiving an actual set.
I think a good tip is, it's better to start your first step later, then it is to start too early. Then from that first step with the left foot, you just speed up your second and third step with the right foot and left foot, depending on where you see the ball.
Probably the most fundamental tip for spiking. Everytime I struggle it gets back to a full armswing backwards before I jump. Get alligator arms and results in no power, vert lower and you end up drifting by every set because you have no momentum to take you vertical. You can always improve your spike but if you dont let your arms swing back its all brute force and ugly....basically load your arms. That solves 70% of issues. Your chest will stay up, will see the court. Drive the ball, jump higher. Seen plently of athletic people that dont swing arms be a fraction of what they could be. Then high elbow. Low elbow, circular is splitting hairs.
If you do left right left (the common 3 step approach) you have to go forward back forward unless you want to hold your arms behind you. However, yes, he is correct if it's just a two step approach.
Quick suggestion: focus on positioning yourself under the ball. From this position if you're a little late or a little early you should still be able to do something with the ball. As your timing and leg strength improves you will be able to do more of a broad jump (traveling forward in the air) before striking the ball. Remember what he says at the start of the video... spiking is one of the hardest techniques to learn... it will take loads of practice.
Hello Andor!! Congrats for the video. I have a question for you. I am a Physical Therapist and I have a patient (beach volley amateur player) with persistent shoulder pain. I believe he is not have a good technique in beach volley and I was looking for youtuve videos on that. My question is: what does your experience with these athletes say? The strength of the hit comes from the arm or from the shoulder movement mostly? Is the arm rotating towards the other side during the strike? Are the the core (abs and back) muscles rotating during the spike too? I believe my patient is giving too much attenion to his hand and arm and not at his shoulder, shoulder blade and core strength. What is your opinion?
4 parts to power, 1) Wrist, 2) Triceps 3) Core 4) Rotation - Throwing motion... All are important! But #4 most important to avoid injury. The thing to remember is if you can use all 4 effectively it is easiest to create power without have an injury. Look at my other video on hitting with power. Hope this helps!
I have to switch to a left handed hitting motion and serve cause of a rotator cuff injury. This video was helpful in adjusting me without me cutting corners and such. I'm actually hitting better now! Thanks!
i get the technique but the thing is when i jump ready to spike i cant measure when the ball is low enough in order for me to spike the ball OR when to jump and sometime i jump too late or too early. how would you fix this?
Hi Andor! Thanks for your videos. They improved my technique considerably! I got the question on the elbow. I've seen some pro players (Dante Amaral, Giba, Endres Murilo) dropping their elbow below their shoulder before a hit. Is it OK? If not how do I practice high elbow? Thanks
@AndorGyulai1 Im a freshman in highschool & im trying to make the Varsity Team next year.. Im pretty good but could get better. Any ideas on how i can get ready over the summer? Thank you! (:
When you hit a volleyball, how is your hand contact at the ball? (i know u hit @ palm, then snap the wrist) but i would like to know how to break it down specifically. Do we hit at center of the hand ( knuckles level) or at middle of palm, or at the end of palm (near wrist area level)? Thank you. Where we generate more power & control?
I've seen this already, but there something still not clear to me because the way i spike is straight down over the net/ block (cuz i can jump really high). However, i saw someone short & they jump only over the net just couple inches, but they still hit a ball topspin really good (& sometime i couldn't block it)(let's assume no angle here).
Do high level players (olympic; professional) swing with their off arm tucked in? There's a really good slow motion swing video with the title "volleyball spike, hand swing in slow motion.mp4"
I do follow your tips an everything else is good, but the problem I have is that I don't hit the ball with power.. I want to see the ball hit the grow before I do but I can't! :(
You should do plyometric workouts. Like squats, single leg angle hops, standing long jumps, standing jump over benches or like hurdles! and it should increase leg strength and your jumping abilities! I hope this helps, cos i did it for track and it really also helped me with volleyball.
I'm 5'1" and i have a 24" inch vertical (still improving) Last year I had about an 18" at the beginning of the summer. I did crossfit and worked out on my own all summer long and it really helped. Just do plenty of leg workouts, but don't neglect your arms because a good vertical means nothing if you don't have arm strength to get the ball over the net.
@Volleyball101299 Have you seen the other guys he has in his videos? These guys are the best of the best. I would think he knows a little more than your coach...(unless your coach works with pros and olympians too, then maybe he's got it right instead! :D)
@Volleyball101299 Hi, He is wrong, has he looked at the video? Show him the video and see what he says! Or have him contact me at volleyball1on1, I have worked with the best players in the world. Thanks Andor
First of all, learn proper grammar before commenting on a video like this, and second of all playing volleyball for ten years is practically no experience for the sport, it takes a long time to get good and know you're stuff, this is the only technique that should be used in volleyball.
it is ok... i guess i am in the volly ball team he is good but my volly ball coach has in in volly ball for 10 years so i think she knows what she is talking about. And so dose this guys but i just dont know.... uhm i am really bad at volly ball but i am good now and my coach made us good NOT THIS GUY !!!!!!!

Thank you so much for this video, I was doing the wrong way of spiking and thats why i wasnt abled to jump most of the times. Since ive watched this video ive applied your techniques in my volleyball training and im actually improving big time. Thank you so much, your videos help me a lot. Your the best ! ;]
Good explanations but I'm missing something: the bending of the head and upper body to the left. You almost never see a good hitter with a vertical torso.
Learn to spike from at least a foot behind away from the net and spike like you serve with topspin. It will never land within the attacking line. But will be a useful spike if you hit to the corners.
My opinion is that if there's anything at all a beginner needs to do first (as part of the contact phase) it is to learn to bend your wrist back as indicated in this video. Does bringing your arms up have a great effect in spiking? I mostly don't get a check ball or it will go outside.
Thanks for the tip :D I was really bad at spiking when i was Grade5

I was hoping to see a demonstration:/
When in the air about to contact the ball should the legs be bent back or straight up and down?
Awesome question. I wonder too XD lol
Lauren Wimberley You should be piking forward legs straight on contact!
ruclips.net/video/uAEeuaubvOs/видео.html A entertaining video to motivate! :)
When you jump legs bend but when you're about to reach height climax you legs should straighten.

Dear Andor,
please upload a technique to contact on the ball while warming up
What are the names of the other 6 videos for the spiking technique? Do you have them numbered or something?

Hi Andor!

Do high level players (olympic; professional) swing with their off arm tucked in? There's a really good slow motion swing video with the title
"volleyball spike, hand swing in slow motion.mp4"
how i hit the ball on the right timing of setter.. when im in outside spike
Brillant!
Thx

i love how i tried doing this even though im 5,1
@DarkTyranitar99 im 5'3 and i kill the ball everytime, good form is wat its all about...oh and your hops count too

I am not really tall to make perfect powerful spikes.

I am 1.70 m and I am 15 years old. Am I too short to be a spiker?
Δήμητρα Χάνα no you are not to short. You can always train and practice to jump higher.
nice
Im 5'4 i cant even touch the top of the net when jumping
I'm 5'4 and I'm twelve I can go above the net😂
You need more vertical power
Put down the net 😁

pulling your arms back in the air doesn't work at all to have any speed and power on your spikes
