@@kaitlinloyer350 That's VERY GOOD! My mother had four sons, and me. All my brothers were taught the basics, which was good because their wives didn't know how to boil water, let alone cook a meal! They would have starved! LOL. If it didn't come in a box they didn't know what to do with it. My mother taught me, as her only girl.

Actually doesn't work that well, instead just don't breathe through your nose. It's more difficult not to breathe with your nose intentionally but if you manage it you won't get any tears for at least 3 or 4 onions.

Made this soup tonight and it was fantastic! My husband had never tried French Onion soup before due to a dairy allergy. This was perfect to make at home, was restaurant quality, and the best part was that my husband and I could each top our soup with our own cheese! I had Gruyere while he topped his with a non-dairy cheese. Rich and flavorful! (Also, super easy to cut the recipe in half for 2 people.) Thank you!

There are so many variations on how to make this great dish! Yours is wonderful! Only one gentle caution: I wouldn't add any amount of sugar to the caramelized onions until I taste them. For example, I've made this dish from Vidalia and Walla Walla onion varieties, which are incredible sweet on their own. I've found that certain varieties of yellow onion may benefit from the addition of some sugar. Of course, the amount of sugar required will vary depending on your personal taste.
Many thanks for another wonderfully instructive post. Cheers.

French Onion is actually one of the easiest soups to make at home, and I wish more people knew that! I like it with the cheese browned and crunchy (almost burned!) on top, but always make extra cheese-toasts to serve alongside for dipping or just snacking. Can't go wrong with a good soup on a cold day! Thanks for this one!

I've been making FOS since I first read Julia Child's recipe. Great video. Just my differences - I slice my onions using my food processor. After the onions have browned, I add 2 TBS of flour and cook another 3 minutes. Then I add 2 quarts Beef Broth, and 1 cup of dry white wine. If people don't have Gruyere, I recommend Swiss. If you don't have Baguettes, use panne or even rye bread. Put mine in the toaster, then into the soup, covered w/cheese, under the broiler. One of the best soups out there.

Just made this tonight. The flavor was awesome! I love your recipes. Only thing is I’d prefer maybe some steak bites and carrots as after a bit I felt strange just eating a bowl of onions lol. But I suppose that’s French onion soup for you! Just writing in case someone else likes a meatier soup as well :)

This looks soooo ggggoooooooooooddd, but can I ask if there is a substitute for the wine because my family dont really buy wine😅

classic way to make the recipe is with dry wine. you can still make it without wine, but it will have a different flavor profile

Just soak the onions in salt water for 10 mins after cutting them and don't remove the cover of onions while soaking them you will not get any tears.

For the onion tears I turn the faucet on while I’m cutting or handling the onions and it works. Even if I forget and in the middle of chopping them I’m reminded I forgot to turn water on (because by then I’m crying 😂) I run the water and it stops. This is how I know it is for sure the running water doing the trick 🥹. Some people say a glass or cup of water right by you also helps.
