Joni Mitchell is one of the most important singer/songwriters to come out of the '60s and flourished in the '70s. But she continued making great music on into the 21st century. She was part of that Southern California rock scene. Google her and you'll learn a lot of interesting stuff. This is the song she's best known for. But her song "Help Me" is probably her biggest hit. "Free Man in Paris" was another really good one. But to be perfectly honest, Joni Mitchell's music was a little too eclectic to be fully appreciated by mass appeal radio like top 40. Her music thrived on album rock radio in the '70s when those stations would do deep dives and exposed more "artsy" stuff. Personally, one of my favorites by Joni Mitchell came a couple of decades later on her "Chalk Mark In A Rain Storm" album, a song called "Cool Water," a song that was first recorded in 1941 by The Sons of the Pioneers. The Counting Crows version (with Vanessa Carlton backing vocals) was done in 2003. It was on the soundtrack for the Sandra Bullock movie "Two Weeks Notice".
Being a Canadian I've heard many of Joni's songs over the years, a few years ago I came across her song "A Case of You", it just might be my favourite Joni Mitchell songs.
The verse about the birds and the bees says, "farmer, farmer, put away the DDT; give me spots on my apples but leave me the birds and the bees". DDT was a pesticide that nearly led to the extinction of the bald eagle. It would end up washing into the rivers so it got into the fish and was eaten by the eagles. The result was that the eggs laid by the eagles were very thin and the babies would hatch too early and die. I started canoeing (in Minnesota) in 1973 and probably went down my favorite river for 10-15 years before the eagles began to make a comeback. The first time seeing one was something I'll never forget. Now I see at least a few of them on every canoe trip. But it's true that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone (or almost gone).
Reminiscent of a line from the Eagles' song The Last Resort ( off the Hotel California album): " They call it paradise, I don't know why, You call someplace paradise, kiss it goodbye".
Joni Mitchell is a Canadian prairie girl who grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan! Say that real fast three times and see if your lid doesn't flip! Ha, ha! Joni is most definitely in the conversation for the greatest songwriters of all time! worth the dig to find out for yourselves. her lyrics will make you think
She wrote this after a trip to Hawaii, they were tearing down the trees coming down for hotels and parking lots. DDT was making the birds eggs too fragile for they to hatch, it was also killing the bees. We don't use it anymore (we almost lost the Eagles to it). Love this song we sang it in 7th grade choir. Enjoy

This song was the result of her staying in Waikiki. She looked out her hotel window to see no Hawaiian Paradise because it was replaced by asphalt and cement. True story. You could do well to learn more about her music and awards for them. Not just words that rhyme. She always tells a story, and always the truth. She's got 10 grammies and numerous other awards for her work.
California; River; Ladies of the Canyon; Help Me; Free Man in Paris; A Case of You; Blue; Woodstock. Joni is a poet, a painter, and she has vocal range which, at its peak, only dogs can hear.
This was written back in the '70s when Earth Day was starting and the awareness that we were killing our earth was just starting. Joni wrote this and a lot of people have covered it. She is a great poet. (she wrote this in Hawaii looking out at paradise with a big parking lot stretching out in front of her window)
This Canadian legend is a singer, songwriter and very talented folk singer from the 60s. She plays guitar and piano. She wrote the song Woodstock, about the very famous festival from 1969, and she wasn't even there! Later, Crosby Stills and Nash did a famous cover of it. Joni is a blessing to the world.... musts for Joni...LIVE of "California", "Rainy Night House" from Miles of Aisles" LP, "A Case of You", "Woodstock" from Miles of Aisles LP oh and "Help Me"....just a few of the many
Joni was one of the greatest artists when Rock music really got popular, 60's, 70's 80's. Her Blue album was hailed by Rolling Stone magazine as the 4th greatest album ever recorded. Listen to it some time and you see why Joni was such a big star. She also wrote the song Woodstock that so many people sang in memory of that first Giant gathering of 600,000 spectators.
So many great Joni Mitchell songs! "Woodstock" (from 1970 Live in London, written about the Woodstock Festival). "The Drycleaner From Des Moines" (A jazzy Joni with top notch jazz players. Look for a live version.). "Free Man In Paris" and "Help Me" are must listens, too. In an era when there were so many great, iconic singer/songwriters, Joni Mitchell was right at the top. Please check out more of her music. Her 1970 Live In London concert is only about 28 minutes long, and features a young Joni, alone on stage, playing solo on guitar, piano and dulcimer.
Joni wrote this during her first visit to Hawaii , looking out at distant beautiful lush hills etc. then looked down from her hotel window to see parking lots and buildings as far as she could see. She wrote the song there and then. She plays guitar, piano and dulcimer, and composes on all three. As the saying goes, "a Joni Mitchell song SAYS something". :D
Joni Mitchell was a very famous folk singer back in the day. 'Both Sides Now', 'California', and 'Help Me' are worth a listen. Btw, she re-made 'Both Sides Now' in 2000 but the original is from 1969. Same song but they feel very different.
I think the back-up singers on this is actually Joni on other tracks. Joni Mitchell is truly a renaissance woman. The artwork on her album covers are her own paintings. She plays multi-instruments including a mountain dulcimer. She has invented some and uses up to 50 different tunings for her guitar. My favorite Joni Mitchell song is "Help Me". It's her response to Graham Nash of Crosby Stills and Nash. Graham's song to Joni was "Our House" which is a sweet love song. Both are worth a listen.
Joni has written songs for other artists. She wrote Woodstock about her experience at Woodstock and gave it Crosby, Stills, and Nash who made it a top 40 hit. This song is about not appreciating the things we have until they are gone, like taking them for granted, like trees being replaced by concrete, birds and bees being killed for the sake of spotless fruit, or taking people who are close to us for granted. Its saying progress isn't always better. I loved this song in 1970 when it was first released and it still applied today. By the way, the band Counting Crows did a cover. As Paul O'Brien commented, Joni was stuck in NY. Her song came from the description given to her by her then boyfriend Graham Nash and David Crosby. And what she had seen watching television reports.
Never heard of Joni Mitchell? If you had to pick the greatest talents of popular music to have emerged in the last 50yrs or so, Joni would have to be in the top 5. Lyrics, music, singing...she had it all.
One of her first and greatest written in Hawaii after seeing a sea of parking lots outside her Hotel room seeing how the natural beauty of that place was disappearing.
Probably the first lady of Canadian Folk music.. (with Buffy St. Marie in that list also) .. who did all types of genres.. (including jazz ,rock & some blues) One of the greatest voices as far as range.. her catalog is huge.. she wrote some very famous songs covered by others (including this) & sung by herself.. Do ... Both Sides Now, Woodstock, & Help Me .. many more.. wonderful reaction..
Joni realized that the environment was in danger way back then. Her lyrics are always meaningful. Please do more Joni Mitchell. She is a legendary songwriter, singer, musician (multiple instruments), and artist. Her album "Blue" is beyond amazing. Absolutely love her!
So glad you found Joni! Her greatest album is "Blue". To really appreciate her majesty, is to hear "A case of You". Finest of the singer/ songwriter genre. Dig in.
Yep. Just listen to the words folks, it's a gentle protest against the destructive things that's what we tried to tell everybody then. Now it's called Climate Change. Stop poisoning the earth. Paved paradise, took away all the trees, stop using DDT, pesticides and killing the birds and bees, the water and even us humans.
I see a bunch of commenters are singing her praises, so not much I can add other than she's the one zeppelin sings about in their song "Going to California" "...someone told me there's a girl out there with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair... ...to find a queen without a king they say she plays guitar and cries and sings..." Legend...
She's playing the guitar. One of the finest folk singers there is. Her vocal ranges are insane. She has a great catalog.

Joni Mitchell goes as deep as it gets. A groundbreaking artist. One of the greatest of all time. She is an influence on countless artists.
She’s a legend ☮️💜.
Love this song!!!! Love Joni Mitchell.....legendary Musician/Songwriter/Singer!!!!Yeah...Asia is Right!!!!
"Free Man In Paris"
The Counting Crows does the cover of this.
Joni Mitchell's "River" is an amazing song you need to listen to.
Joni never played at Woodstock she was in NYC with prior commitments.
Never heard of Joni Mitchell? If you had to pick the greatest talents of popular music to have emerged in the last 50yrs or so, Joni would have to be in the top 5. Lyrics, music, singing...she had it all.
Grateful that you're giving airspace to this utter masterpiece!
This song was popular since the late 60's. And was more recently covered by Counting Crows.
One of her first and greatest written in Hawaii after seeing a sea of parking lots outside her Hotel room seeing how the natural beauty of that place was disappearing.
It was sampled in many songs....Jonie Mitchell she is a legend in the world of music and a magic song writer.....:)
Joni Mitchell ... Canadian icon who just won a grammy last night (lifetime achievement, I think) :))
Dig in.
Incredible songwriter, incredible singer and (often overlooked) a very talented guitarist.
Her song "Help Me" is so good.
She wrote this song about a time when she was in Hawaii and she saw them cutting down trees, thus ruining paradise ✌️
@@crackersmom2679 well said ✌️
I see a bunch of commenters are singing her praises, so not much I can add other than she's the one zeppelin sings about in their song "Going to California"
"...someone told me there's a girl out there with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair... ...to find a queen without a king they say she plays guitar and cries and sings..."
Legend...
Legendary songwriter, legendary performer, legendary among the legendary.
Joni is Canadian and police cars in Montreal were yellow in the 70’s. When people got arrested they said a big yellow taxi took them away.
I believe her motivation for this song was written when she went yo Hawaii. I lived there for 4 years. She's spot on.
