  • Turkey hunting is not as easy as it looks. But if you start learning the reason why turkeys act the way they do, it can give you a lot of insight in to how to hunt them. Turkey behavior is something a lot of turkey hunters neglect to learn. Do yourself a favor and learn them now, instead of through years of bad turkey hunts.

Up here in Ontario Canada I personally like my self proclaimed ‘nooner’ technique. Instead of getting up at half past stupid in the morning and watching the Tom your after fly down off the roost only to meander off with the hens he’s with and then you go home tired and empty handed. Just sleep in yourself and header out around 8 am or so, set up in a ground blind and put out one lone hen decoy. Yelp around every 15 mins or so just listen for that distant gobble. Try this for about 2 hrs or so. If you have no success, move to a different location and try again or another day. Most times if that gobblers around within earshot, he’ll respond. Be patient and he’ll come in on a string. He’s done with his hens , but still wants to party. I’ve shot 90% of my Tom’s between 10am and 2pm. Give it a try folks.

Have a friend hardly never goes early .He says let the goblers work the piss and vinegar out their system and lets them wonder awY from the hens .it is unreal howmany birds he calls in middle of day for his friends to shoot

If reaping turkeys is cheating then why is using decoys not cheating also lol? If it's legal, take it how you can get it. You said it yourself turkey hunting isn't always easy.

ALTHOUGH IT SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN, BUT IN THE REAL WORLD PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SHOT AND SOME KILLED.... IT'S DEFINITELY MORE DANGEROUS THAN USING DECOYS...UNFORTUNATELY YOU HAVE ALOT OF PEOPLE WITH NOT ALOT OF COMMON SENSE OUT THERE!! STAY SAFE!!! 🦃

I feel like fanning is more dangerous than anything. Any other idiot that might be trespassing (which is an issue in my area), or another hunter on public land, may mistake you for an actual bird. I don’t care about the “cheating” aspect, because it’s no different than using a decoy, you’re just a lot closer to the decoy. I just think it’s dangerous.

Thirty years ago (Reaping) with the hunting pressure the way it used to be in WV there was a good chance you could have shot at! Do whatever you want. I don’t know that the risk is worth it for me. Used to meet three or four people every time you were hunting.

We call it. Reaping turkeys and in Michigan it’s illegal. So check state law on that.
I think the most important part is knowing what part of the breading season the toms are in. Pecking order phase breading phase and the tired beat up don’t want to fight phase. Good luck.

Turkeys can’t ruin a deer hunt they may seem loud but turkey and deer live together. Often feed around each other

If reaping is legal where you hunt, I would not be so critical of it. Nothing works every time. Not being a young man any more reaping isn't for me, but I would never criticize others doing it. For some, I could see reaping being fun to do. Turkeys are unpredictable. Do whatever works!

I’m tip is. Wash your cloths in uv killer soap.
Turkeys see in ultraviolet. So if you wash in regular laundry detergent. You’ll glow blue to a turkey.
Also hens see a uv glow on a Tom as a healthy male. So I spray a uv brighter on my strutter.
    Probably not necessary. lol
But uv kill your cloths For sure!!!
    Good luck everyone.
