I cannot say for certain but watching this video and others, Sylvia appears to be someone who is extremely uncomfortable with being vulnerable. It is not a question of whether it is a bad or good thing because personalities are incredibly complexed and deeply rooted in past experiences and upbringing.
But I do observed that compared to an average person she has hardened her heart to a deep extent out of fear of expressing/confronting her feelings. The overly hysterical laughing could be a means of hiding one's pain. After all laughing is always easier than facing one's true feelings. If you look at Nina, whilst she laughs at jokes she doesn't "go overboad" and she does rein herself in because she still acknowledges the fact that a divorce however amicable can never be a celebratory occasion.
A number of viewers did point out that Sylvia seems "happy" and doesn't look as sad as Ryan (or even close friends). As if she is eager and raring to move on as a single and available woman in pursuit of personal happiness. But on the contrary I think the issue runs much deeper, that the true emotions have been buried so far down and all that hysterical laughing is an involuntary attempt to overcompensate for the stress and hide the pain. (See 38:36)
While a divorce can be amicable, we must be careful not to assign the attributes of happiness or success or victory to an evacuation from an unworkable marriage.
P/S: 38:36 the vibes here worry me most. Sylvia laughter is hysterical and uncontrollable (compare this to Nina who still manages sensitivity and humour together in a balanced way). I once heard a saying that goes like this: when something terrible happens, comfort not the one who is crying (Ryan) but the one who is laughing (Sylvia).
To loved ones and friends of Sylvia: while she looks unaffected and may even brush you off repeatedly, do continue to check in on her.

One of my job desc was to observe people thru their body language, and all I can say is:
“Be strong Sylvia, find someone’s shoulder to cry with”

    • @maichieko413
      @maichieko413 4 года назад +29

Also on the point on Sylvia's mother: whilst her mom's worldview is confined within her generation's social norms (and limited to Taiwanese TV dramas), without access to liberal ideas and knowledge, a mother-even if she cannot understand her child's opinions and decisions-will ALWAYS know when her child is sad or suffering.
So it may seem laughable that her mum is demanding a house tour and what not but that's only because no prior proper communication was done to help her accept and come to terms with this development. And with her limited understanding, she could only act in her own ways to reach out to her child even though her methods may not be the most sophisticated in order to address Sylvia's emotional/mental needs.
So young people out there, it may be true your parents don't understand how or what you think, but they will always know when you are sad.

As someone who had been through this feeling(not event), putting a strong front with my emotions, I can say I agree with your sayings. That in fact emotions and feelings which supposed need to flow as a conscious being, having it buried and piled below other emotions, instead of being open due to afraid of being vulnerable, it will surely accumulate and bomb like a ticking bomb.
As when Nina known about her, "putting a strong front" and "Breaking her in some ways".

The taboo of divorce is really more predominant in the Asian culture. It’s actually really common in western countries like Australia and America. I don’t think it really matters personally. You still are who you are, maybe even better from the lessons learnt.

No... Lets be honest. There are many bhuddists and muslims in Asia than the West and yet there are more christian/catholic/mormon/evangelist etc in the west. For bhuddists and muslims divorce is not taboo. While for christian and other christian based religions divorce is not allowed

It should be taboo, because divorce is a shameful topic. Unless there is repeated violence, death, or suicide, may a couple part. A true couple sticks with each other through everything. Hence at weddings, they say til death do you part. You dont just throw away your marriage over small things( anything more minor than death, suicide, drugs, physical and sexual abuse). People who divorce for any other reason should be ashamed because their bond was fake if they can't endure through hard times. Marriage is a sacred bond and coming together of two families and identities and should be permanent unless there is abuse, drugs, or death. Anything else under this is not an excuse to simply divorce.

You guys are an example of the most loving family and the way you guys love each other and care for each other is amazing. Your marriage was definitely not a failure, it was just something that didn't work out the way you guys hoped it would. I haven't even listened the whole podcast, just 5 min in. But I need you to know that they way you guys ended things, despite it being sad, it was what you needed. We can't shelter them from bad news or sad news in real life, I know you have had a care taker role in your family but this is the time when they need to care for you (however that may look like). It simply means you're done with someone and your affinity with him has ended and simply a chapter of your life closed and a new chapter will start soon. Just smile and move on! You put a smile on my face every whether it's new videos or throwbacks to the old which had me falling in love with the main channel. You guys will always have my support. Even from the Philippines, working as a second-liner(we are a group of volunteers delivering food supplies to Frontliners on duty), I would watch you guys during my breaks. I'd share your content with the people here who'd ending up laughing their lungs out at your videos. In fact, some of them are recent subscribers of all your channels. Hahaha. Anyways, take care , stay safe, be happy, especially mama owl Sylvia who gets more chio every video. :P

Hi Sylvia, I find you very inspirational :) I can't imagine speaking about my personal life in front of people outside my inner circle, thank you so much for sharing :) From hearing about your stories, you have gone through many setbacks, that you take in your stride and move forward and find solutions. How do you do that? And can you tell more stories :)

ah, i cried watching this episode. not because you weren't strong but because i can see in both your and nina's eyes that you're holding back this whirlwind of emotion. i hope you take the circuit breaker period to slowly heal and don't feel "pushed" to do anything ever again. i do think telling your viewers probably lifted a weight off you though, so i hope you can be free and yourself again
