You honestly picked a perfect year for simian cinema. Better Man, Planet of the Apes 4, GodzillaXKong… at the rate we’re going, in five years, there won’t be any human movies left
People don't bring up The Legend of Tarzan in the conversation of live-action remakes because it's not a remake of the Disney film. It's just another Tarzan film, there's like a bajillion of them not made by Disney.
This is really convenient because I had a Mandela effect where I thought you had already made a Monkey Mondays video and spent the last ten minutes looking for it only for this to drop
I respect your opinion regarding Kung Fu Panda 2 but I have to disagree. The animation is phenomenal, I still find it endearing, and in my opinion has a much stronger heart to it than the first.
I love 2, I have it at 5 stars on Letterboxd, but I do agree with him on the humor. It really wasn’t as funny as the first but I can understand since it’s a little more serious than the first. I can agree that the film has more heart than 1 especially with Po, but the reason the original is my favorite is because it’s simply the complete package: it has humor, heart, beautiful colors, exciting action, powerful wisdom, and 2 does most of those but aside from the emotions I prefer most of the stuff from one.
this challenge was very good and inspired me to to a saturdead night challenge where I watch a zombie movie every Saturday! keep doing this type of thing man it's great
I didn’t know you wanted this to catch on with other people; I would have participated! I loved that you did this last year & I’ll def join next time you do this
You doing this challenge actually inspired me to do a similar thing with a different topic! I am doing train Tuesdays this year which for me combines two of my favorite things. It's also lovely that I can share it with a few people I know who I poll what I watch.
@@JaxzanProditor here's the link to the letterboxd list! So far I've watched Police Story 3, Train to Busan, Indiana Jones and the last crusade, and the 15:17 to Paris!
@@_harrop I think RUclips ate the link :( But sounds fun! Train to Busan is definitely a movie I want to get to soon. The French Connection has a pretty iconic train scene, if you haven’t seen it.
Just a random suggestion. Submarine Sundays. There’s enough variety of genres and decades to cover while still being able to cover the majority of them within a year. From Das Boot to Down Periscope.
wish you woulda talked more about the things you learned about monkeys in cinema, like what trends are consistent across all the monkey movies and did it make you learn something larger about film? i was looking forward to hearing those monkey monday insights
I would love to see you tackle an idea like this but with "so bad it's good" movies. Find some hilarious hidden gems, and maybe break your sanity along the way
Yesss Cure (1997) hive rise up!!!! I saw it like a year and a half ago and keep showing it to friends as an excuse to rewatch it. Also, i’m not sure if you’ve sworn off of monkey movies forever, but it might be interesting to check out the 1970s documentary “Primate”. It’s pretty harrowing because it’s about (and shows) a lot of medical testing, but it really is illuminating on our relationship to monkeys.
I started my own challenge of watching a vampire movie every Wednesday of the year rn I’m going through the twilight movies and it’s definitely an experience
If you're looking for a fun challenge I'm currently trying to watch every major release of the year I was born which is about 180 films. It's been a great way to explore movies I would've never bothered with.
I want you to know that my family started monkey Monday last year because of one of your videos we have never watched more movies together or honestly we haven't been this close to each other ever. Thank you for the idea
32:22 "don't watch anything in the last like 20 minutes of this video because it's not worth your time" video is 33:41 minutes long first film after the 13:41 minute mark: The Circus, by Charlie Chaplin.
Karsten idk if you’re going to see this but following your monkey mondays journey on letterboxd last year inspired me to do my own challenge this year i’ve personally never enjoyed musicals and after watching wicked last december i decided every monday of 2025 i would watch a musical (musical mondays) thanks for the inspiration man
You said this trend didn't catch on, but for what it's worth, your Monkey Mondays inspired me to do something similar in 2025, and my husband and I settled on Nic Cage. We're watching a Nic Cage film every Monday of the year. So far we've watched The Retirement Plan, Teen Titans: Go to the Movies, Army of One, and Lord of War. It's been fun so far, and I wanted to say thanks for the inspiration to do our own little film challenge.
Probably didn’t catch on because over 75% of these are barely monkey movies, just movies with monkeys in them. This could have gone so much harder and played it safe
My challenge for this year is to chronologically watch one movie from every year starting 1900, and I honestly can't recommend it enough, I learned so much about the evolution of cinema already and it got me to see some really interesting silent films
karsten I want you to know I looked forward to your monkey monday selections in every single what I watched this month from last year. the monkey monday movement is alive and well
Dude, Karsten, you've started a movement with my friend and I. We've mapped out a 5 year plan: 2025: Monkey Mondays - has to have a monkey in it 2026: Taco Tuesdays - has to have a taco in it 2027: Wedding Wednesdays - has to have a wedding in it 2028: Two Stars Thursdays - has to be a movie with an average of two stars for reviews 2029: French Fridays - has to be a French film
"The chalenge did not catch on, I did not start a moviment the way I thought I would, I didn't learn all that much" Pure perfection. That's some ego right there, nice to see the realitly force it self upon it (Not a hater, just... I don't know man, glad for the humility lesson he got)
Something deeply funny about Karsten watching monkey movies all year and not managing to watch THE Robbie Williams monkey movie before it closed out. And then not one but TWO monkey movies nominated at the oscars 😂 I'm just going to believe Karsten manifested that by mistake
probs should have told you this last year... but the BBC's Dynasties series had an episode on chimps which would have fit in really well (and was amazing)
I can say with 1000% certainty having seen it multiple times, there is either no monkey in Days of Heaven, or this is just like that thing where people remember the Berenstain Bears dying in prison in the 1980s but they're actually misremembering the 1996 Shaq movie Kazaam.
karsten definitely won't see this but y'all should check out more of victoria vincent/vewn's works, her animations are very trippy and thought-provoking and they're free on youtube i love them a lot
For some reason I would always watch Konga (1961) (A rip-off of King Kong) a lot as a kid. I remember liking probably just because of how it looked but I haven’t been able to find it since.
i was just thinking about it earlier this week as to why monkey mondays all started, and what was the reason behind it so thank goodness this video came today.
The Legend of Tarzan isn’t a live action remake…? There have been at least a dozen live action Tarzan movies made before the Disney animated movie. They wasn’t the first one!
The Laurel and Hardy movie appears to use a person in a suit for it's "chimp" but it was the 1930's so I'm sure someone was abusing some animals somewhere during production. Also isn't that Tarzan film just based on the old novels? It's not Disney is it? I went and saw it with my dad when it came out. He loved it. I did not.
The Japanese are crazy about copyright. I lost my Google blog because I used a picture from Google in an article saying I liked an anime. They don't feel pain, they can't be reasoned with and they never stop.
karsten i’m pretty sure darwin proved all movies are monkey movies
Bro hasn't seen 10 Skies by James Benning 💀💀💀
And yet people still get annoyed when I try to sample their fleas.
monkey39128's recent mixtape was pretty good, I must admit
Very good
Actually, he proved that all movies and monkeys have a common ancestor (Original King Kong)
can't believe you didn't close out the year with Better Man
Literally!! "WHAT'S WITH THE MONKEY?"
LITERALLY!!!! i need him to watch better man 😭😭
You honestly picked a perfect year for simian cinema. Better Man, Planet of the Apes 4, GodzillaXKong… at the rate we’re going, in five years, there won’t be any human movies left
don’t forget about gladiator 2 and wicked. and i haven’t yet seen it and its not a movie but im sure season 4 umbrella academy will have some pogo too
Ah yes, the massive flop “Better Man”
Maybe Wes Anderson will do a third stop motion movie, but this time with monkeys
There was also monkey man, but that was just a trick 😢
