I like them both for different reasons. Northlane is definitely an album band for me because they’re songs are different enough that I could play the album front to back
@@ooHHDee I feel like Northlane should work on EP's like they're planning. EP is the best way to go when you're trying new sounds! Albums are cool because there's a ton of music to listen to and you can make it physical but I'm afraid it's a bit outdated with the digital stuff and plateforms that forces you to release often! Anyway, started an argument for nothing (jk it's for algorithm hahaha)
Guitars were always in 4/4, it's just the way each bar is phrased. You're hearing syncopation, not an odd time signature. If that were the case, the song would sound terrible. Between the guitars and drums there's alot of displacement, meaning that accents may not always land on the downbeat... when you combine this with plenty of space in each bar, it feels less and less like 4/4.
@@gSWG3R Yeah that's not what I meant, English isn't my mother tongue so I sometimes just make it short haha I was talking about the guitar gimmick, that repeats over and over, but yeah it finishes on grid for sure :)
It makes sense they made a song together. Northlane and parkway drive did a short US tour together with make them suffer and amity affliction for about a month. Only 19 shows, back in September October. I wonder if they started writing and recording while on that tour
I remember them alluding to this during that tour, said that they got to meet and collaborate with some "good friends" and made some interesting music. Here we are!
Its definitely not going for that poppy single vibe and i love it, I'm getting huge meshuggah and tesseract vibes and im happy that they are not afraid to be weird because this is when northlane shines the most
The production on his voice instantly reminded me of Node as soon as he started singing. Maybe it was just the atmosphere of the song, but I got huge Node vibes.
I'm using Beyerdynamic DT700 Pro X headphones into a focusrite. Marcus sounds a bit pulled back in the mix but not so much that he gets drowned out. Reminds me of the mix from songs like Jinn and Vultures from Alien. Great song and react!
That pulled back sound might be coming from your headphones rather than the mix, when listening on my Sennheiser 58X corrected with Sonarworks Reference software I wouldn't say Marcus is even that pulled back in the mix, sure maybe not directly up front like some other songs but he's still very clear and present. Still a great mix regardless and even without the calibration it sounds amazing
hey man, saw your old videos of you listening to steven wilson and i wonder if you ever heard vermillioncore. i'd love to see your response. Also, everytime Northlane releases something new like this, i have to really let myself feel the song. first time i listen, i don't feel alot, second time, it's the same. But then it all connects inside my brain and i start going apeshit. Northlane, spiritbox, loathe, tesseract, currents... there is so much amazing metalcore out there right now and i cannot get enough of it!
This is definitely a shock to the system, still trying to comprehend what's going on but enjoying it! I agree with the vocals, it's one of the few tracks they have where I just can't even understand Marcus which is something I'm not used to and wish was different.
Yeah I had the same thought as well, I was searching for a groove in the middle parts and I just couldn’t find it. Agree that it will be much better live. Opening slaps like a mfer though Edit: It fuckin slaps nine months later. Please never take this song off the live rotation
@DrewFortune97 You've probably heard this already, but Northlane collaborated with Phase One (electronic) on a song called "Crash and Burn". It's a banger too.
What i really like the most about this whole situation with upcoming EP of Northlane, they literally named it a "Mirror's Edge" and i find it so interesting because this is one of my most favorite games of all time. What's so special is that the soundtrack of this game is a perfect EDM that still sounds unique and amazing after all these years(the game was released in 2008), but what's funny is that i compared it to current Northlane's direction of sound once and i hoped that they will move into similar type of dark sci-fi sound, but they literally named EP like this and it cannot be the coincidence 😂 Can't wait to hear the whole EP.
Loving this track. Full of energy and excitement. Perfect opener for their future live sets. It's so different from Dante which is great. Northlane tons of dynamics and Marcus' amazing voice. Good point about the vocal production, Drew, I agree it sounds bit buried in the mix here as in Dante it was much brighter, clearer.
Your critic on the vocal production is one I've seen other people point out as well. My take on it is that it is intentional. Miasma is suffocating, toxic, deconstructive in nature. From beginning to end, the song feels as if it is suffocating the listener. It is disorienting in feeling. I believe that is the intention of the song because now that Northlane has introduced their own production with the EDM elements, they have a wider reach of control of stimuli the music has. For example listen to Windbreaker from singularity. Breaking the wind means going against all odds and forces of nature. The end of the song, there is a moment of ambience that pans between the left and right ears. Emulating how it could feel to break the wind.
I have to agree with you that the vocal mix feels weird (I don't personally love it or hate it), specifically the parts with screams. I'm a bit of an amateur when it comes to music production but it sounds to me that the screams are compressed and filtered pretty hard. Some pretty hardcore compression and filtering is pretty typical in modern production but I think it sticks out a bit more because the instrumentation in those sections has necessitated fairly heavy handed frequency scooping to keep the overall mix from turning to mush. The basic issue the sound engineer has had to deal with here is that there are so many instruments in at least some of the screamed sections and so many of them are occupying at least parts of the same range as Marcus' screams.
Yeah metalcore hasn’t really gotten any better since 2013 and there is only a few bands such as Northlane who push the envelope and keep me interested in the genre. There is so so so many bands in the scene now and 99% of them are copy and paste, they have to have an extremely soul shattering cadence such as invent animate or just songwriting skills that stand above the rest like Currents and Silent Planet. Other than that the bands that blend different genres together like Northlane, Spiritbox and Sleep token just make most bands sound extremely mediocre.
DANTE OR MIASMA?😳
Miasma for me, but both are so different!

Absolutely love how they mixed 4/4 on drums with the guitars gimmick in another time signature. It makes it so headbangable! love it so much

This is like a mix of Obsidian and Node and I love it. Node still a super underrated album.
Node is my favorite Northlane album besides Alien for sure
YES THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING THE WHOLE TIME

MIASMA! Also the new Elitist is fire! Saw it on Nik Nocturnal's stream!
Welcome to Northlane evolving again, the EP is a perfect method of introducing a new sound. I love this track regardless.
Fantastic song. Obviously Dante has the catchy element, but this song hits the spot too. Can't wait for the Ian Kenny feature.

Seems like it could use some more dynamics? Feels a bit one note throughout the whole song. Maybe I gotta give it a few more listens.
I hear you on that one for sure man!
Did feel slightly monotone, but I can see it absolutely going off in a live environment 🔥
Hm, it is more Alien-ish in that sense, but I blasted it in the car and it still had its fair share of undertones imo

fantastic song, only gripe i had was during the breakdown, the cymbals didnt rlly hit too hard and sounded quiet
Pretty much agreed with most of what you said. I dodnt like Dante at all tbh but enjoyed this. Winstons part definitely felt right for this

This song would probably be at least 50% better if the mix didn't sound like someone threw a heavy wool blanket over it.
