The original Top Gun didnt have the camera tech to put in the cockpits, but most of the exterior shots and stunts in the original film were really shot by actual pilots doing the stunts. Here in Top Gun maverick, they actually finally had put cameras all over the cockpits. The scene where Maverick "proves" the mission can be flown was actually done, with NO CGI that was done by an actual Blue Angels Stunt pilot, Tom Cruise sat in the backseat (made it looks like hes in the front) but when the camera was pointing forward at the pilot it was an actual pilot with some hair and makeup fitted to the back of the head and the helmet on to give that sense it was actually Maverick flying. There is a great behind the scenes video on youtube. It shows all the training the actors had to do, and how things were filmed. The actors had to go to a Navy Bootcamp, and all had to actually learn to fly, so they knew how to react in the flight scenes (even though they weren't actually piloting in the film). Very good video.

Every student that goes through the TOPGUN program becomes a teacher. These often young LTjg's or LT's take back what they learn at the school back to their squadrons and then pass on what they learned. A wingman I had during one of my tours in Afghanistan had the patch. Hell of a pilot despite her callsign making it seem otherwise.
@@Tar-Numendil Ya Navy callsigns tend to have some sting to them. they are normally earned after an embarrassing situation. I got lucky with the callsign "Hammer" as instead of an embarrassing situation. Mine came about as a result of the other 2 ways a sign is normally earned in the USN. Officer's last name and personality, I had one goal while in the Navy and that was to hammer the enemy into nonexistence and due to my last name being what it is my squadron came up with "Hammer"
Seeing the Tomcat whip some a** again was great, it could go toe to toe with the F-15 and was prematurely retired, so it was nice to see it honored the way they did. Definitely not happy about the incorrect gun sounds though…

I love Maverick announcing he's going to make the practice run and the only word in the room is a muttered "nice" from Phoenix. I don't think they were alluding to Maverick dying, rather just emphasising the complexity and danger of the mssion.
I worked on this film. My boss is Jared Chandler, he’s the military costumer in the credits. We made three of each Tom Cruise’s jackets and uniforms. He kept one of each in his vault. The studio had his second leather jacket and one of his flight suits. We sold one of the flight jackets for $30,000 to a collector. The other flight suit and leather jacket is in our warehouse. And we’re never selling the leather jacket.
Really! That is soooo cool!!! Thanks for watching one of my older first edits when I was first learning! I appreciate it a lot! Thanks for sharing this story!

You must be Canadian, your reference to the Snowbirds gives you away. Your animation was fantastic. Call signs are given to you by your fellow pilots LOL. Enjoyed your review.
I'm gonna give this lady a comment because she made such an effort after the film was done. Acting, which is probably her field -- note these actors, mostly 2nd and 3rd tier, knew the opportunity they had here career-wise. They gave it their all. And be aware that they were required to turn on the cameras in the cockpit at proper times, arrange in flight for proper lighting, even re-apply makeup. All themselves, in the cockpit, because there was no other way. These young people made a big commitment to their roles. I actually don't know if that means they get extra points for "acting". They will definitely get extra points for future casting, because they can be relied on to work very hard if it's required of them. Tom Cruise didn't just cast actors. He made them stars. And last, the way the military works. All of these actors are Naval officers. This requires a university degree, months of training in military regulations, learning uniforms, learning appearance, learning professional courtesy. These were all O-3s. Officer ranks have titles but they are numbered, too. Ensign, Lieutenant Junior Grade (JG), Lieutenant, and. . . I won't bore you. Maverick is a Captain. That is O-6. Ranks achieved by doing assigned duties and accumulating years of experience. The next jump up from O-6 to O-7, 8 etc is to Admiral. The scene were some O-3s toss an O-6 out of a bar onto the sand. Very fun scene, but that will never ever ever happen. They would not dare. Oh, and the fight scene in the briefing room. That generally never happens, but the rush to hold them back from each other would be very real. That would be career ending. Thanks for the reaction/review. Appreciated.
super bummed about not having the great balls of fire scene in the reaction but this is one of my all time favorite movies. I remember seeing it once theaters opened after covid and i havent seen a movie like it sense. such raw power and great story telling
For high altitude recon planes like the darkstar and formerly, the SR-71, pilots wore pressurized suits since the atmospheric pressure is so low at the altitudes they operate in, if there was a depressurization of the cockpit, the pilots wouldn't just suffocate slowly, their blood would literally boil since the vapor pressure will be so low. It would kill them almost instantly. The suit was a redundant safety system.
Been there done that my challenge coin hit the bar last year. Of course every military member there had theirs to answer the challenge. That was a very expensive tab I will never make the mistake of having happen again
Hey Ames, I really like TopGun and TopGun-Maverick. But the fun part is what professional fighter pilots say about that. Some of their comments can be seen on youtube aswell, and they are hilarious. Quote about the scene where Maverick is behind that next generation fighter which is punshing the brakes and catches Maverick unprepared for that maneuver. They said: Maverick, if it offers you that much of a jet - SHOOT IT! I was really lmfao ! 🤣 So we all know its still Hollywood event though the technique improved a lot into realistic scenes. Greatings from Germany, CIAO, Marco P.S. I love what and how you are doing it. Your call-sign would be 'Lightbeam' cause you brighten my day? So you like that?
You and your John Ham...wth? Best Movie I've ever seen? No. One of the top three most astounding movies I've ever seen? yes,. After years of CGI, we finally get a film where they push practical effects to the limit - and it tells. Superb.
I never saw the first movie, I saw this one in theaters when it was released, it's fuckin INCREDIBLE, and I never ever thought I'd get really emotional, but I definitely did, Tom just absolutely fuckin killed it, no doubt 💯
What everyone needs to remember is that in the real world, when you graduate top gun, you are rotated back to your squadron to teach the same skills the instructors just taught you And experienced pilots with sufficient flight hours and excellent performance reports, who have gone through the course can actually apply for the naval strike fighter instructor's course . That is where they bring back graduates who are interested, and teach them the additional skills to become instructors for the schoolhouse. Not quite as hard as the selection process for the Blue Angels but very close.
One of the best sequels of all time! Such a great movie! Would I be sick in the head to say that this one is even better than the original, but it wouldn't be unless the first one existed?

Callsigns in the Navy are based on 3 things generally. Last name, the officer in question personality and most commonly an embarrassing situation. real question is what embarrassing things have you done that you're willing to share
How many people get cool callsigns? I only know Viper which is a real guy that appeared a few seconds with Charlie before she went to the rest room in Top Gun
I get what Ames is saying about John Hann, I think he played it like a bureaucrat instead of a general. He was commanding but not in the military sort of way more of a boss of an office.

Gonna disagree about Jon Hamm, he's doing just fine here. Not sure why you think he needs to be angrier (Maybe you've seen him in too many Progressive commercials)😏?
Pro tips... Penny is the admiral's daughter from the first movie. Hangman so impressed tom as an actor and person, he told him to ho get a pilot licence...he did! Goose learned to play the piano song, for this movie. Bob, the pilot, is real life son of bill Pullman, who played a pilot and president in Independence Day! Tom has multiple licences in real life...chaueffer, motorbike, single and two prop and single jet planes, even real estate! Hangmans ego here is a combination of iceman and maverick. They spent 30 to 90 minutes a day for months, flying for this, and had to control their own equipment, cameras, mics, etc., while in the air. Many of them ended up with jet fuel and carcinogens in their blood! The general was a test pilot in the movie, The Right Stuff and flight director in Apollo 13! The plane at the end....is Toms'!!!😮😮😮 Rooster best movie will forever be Whiplash!!! Jennifer Connelly has done so many epic movies and scenes....hrr riding the quarter operated horse is a classic! But she will go down in history for the movie Labrynth!😮. I flew with some badboy pilots back in my army days, but almost all choppers, and ine A-10 guy. My regret is I never flew in a jet.

These often young LTjg's or LT's take back what they learn at the school back to their squadrons and then pass on what they learned. A wingman I had during one of my tours in Afghanistan had the patch. Hell of a pilot despite her callsign making it seem otherwise.
Well what was her callsign?
@@Tar-Numendil "punchout"
@@CDRhammond Ah that's unfortunate.
Officer's last name and personality, I had one goal while in the Navy and that was to hammer the enemy into nonexistence and due to my last name being what it is my squadron came up with "Hammer"
one of my fave NES games growing up lollllzzzzzz
Seeing the Tomcat whip some a** again was great, it could go toe to toe with the F-15 and was prematurely retired, so it was nice to see it honored the way they did. Definitely not happy about the incorrect gun sounds though…
thanks for watching one of my first editing long form videos! self taught and know nothing so thanks so much for being here!!!!! i kept this up cause I've come a long way LMAOOOOO
Great Reaction HDA. I had inklings of you being Canadian along the way...the accent, mentions of Hockey, copious swears lol...but the 'Snowbirds' reference and saying 'c'est trop!' pretty much clinched it! 😉
LOL!! No doubt about it! Thanks for the comment! Thanks for watching! I appreciate it!!!!!
@@holddowna You're welcome! And now I know who you remind me of! Aubrey Plaza! (Meant it as a compliment fyi)
I have the F18 on my keychain as well as my rank insignia. The one Tom Cruise had is the F-14
#HoldDownA, you're so sweet. Thank you so much for uploading this awesome movie reaction. I love your content because it's so cool, and I really enjoy watching you react to different shows and movies.
Thank you so much @brianshepherd for your kind comment! I’m trying to get more out! Especially for Halloween!!! Thanks for watching I really appreciate it !
I love the Dazed and Confused reference. Alright alright alright. Wooo hooo
This was an absolutely fantastic film to see in the theater and I am more than glad I went to see it.
21:03 I got that reference - Seinfeld, Chicken Roasters episode :D hilarious episode.
YESSSSS!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
You must be Canadian, your reference to the Snowbirds gives you away. Your animation was fantastic. Call signs are given to you by your fellow pilots LOL. Enjoyed your review.
I just watch movies by myself. If someone comes with me, great, if not, great. lol
I’m the same!! But ppl wanted to come with me so I waited! never again 🔪🤣
20:10 "He's sweating balls rn, and he's not even in the cockpit" PAUSEEE
Lol
Best sequel since Terminator 2.
It’s amazing ! Thanks for the info!
The one movie to see in a theater...
Yep😅
TOM CRUISE = LEGEND
super bummed about not having the great balls of fire scene in the reaction but this is one of my all time favorite movies. I remember seeing it once theaters opened after covid and i havent seen a movie like it sense. such raw power and great story telling
Loving Tony Scott makes you one of the best people on the planet
Love the man! And his movies!
Great Reaction, New Subscriber ❤️
Thanks Sharon!! I really appreciate it! welcome to the channel!!!!
Love this, that line caught me off guard too
Watching with you💯
Jen Connely is Penny Benjamin the admirals daughter mentioned in the first movie
Yep!
Hey Ames,
I really like TopGun and TopGun-Maverick. 🤣
So we all know its still Hollywood event though the technique improved a lot into realistic scenes.
Greatings from Germany, CIAO, Marco
P.S. I love what and how you are doing it. Your call-sign would be 'Lightbeam' cause you brighten my day? So you like that?
Thanks so much for watching! I love light beam! I may have to be something like “nitro” or “hyperspeed” cause I was soo hyper hahaha
U give me serious Aubrey Plaza vibes. Lol you are awesome!! Definitely subscribing 🙂
Thanks! @alejandrorodriguez
You missed SO MUCH by not seeing it in a theatre.
I know
You did a great job with this reaction video and it helped me relive my passionate love for Top Gun: Maverick. Thank you.
Thanks! Fun movie! Can’t wait to watch it again!
I know talking is all part of this experience but I don't know how you enjoy any of the movie cuz you never stop talking
oh I thoroughly enjoyed .. can you not tell lollzzz
I knew you enjoyed it I wasn't offended you just had a lot to say
You and your John Ham...wth? Best Movie I've ever seen? No. One of the top three most astounding movies I've ever seen? yes,. After years of CGI, we finally get a film where they push practical effects to the limit - and it tells. Superb.
I love the movie! I dunno Jon Hamm didn’t hit for me!
I never saw the first movie, I saw this one in theaters when it was released, it's fuckin INCREDIBLE, and I never ever thought I'd get really emotional, but I definitely did, Tom just absolutely fuckin killed it, no doubt 💯
He is a True ⭐️! See the original! So good!
@@holddowna he is! And I definitely will ma'am for sure, also, you got yourself a new subscriber 💯
What everyone needs to remember is that in the real world, when you graduate top gun, you are rotated back to your squadron to teach the same skills the instructors just taught you
And experienced pilots with sufficient flight hours and excellent performance reports, who have gone through the course can actually apply for the naval strike fighter instructor's course .
That is where they bring back graduates who are interested, and teach them the additional skills to become instructors for the schoolhouse. Not quite as hard as the selection process for the Blue Angels but very close.
Thanks @arnold sherrill for you comment!
One of the best sequels of all time! Such a great movie! Would I be sick in the head to say that this one is even better than the original, but it wouldn't be unless the first one existed?
Bit late to the party, Aubrey Plaza. But better late than never 😅
So late! But worth the wait!

@@guts-141 Some get what sound like cool signs though they usually have an embarrassing story behind them.
I get what Ames is saying about John Hann, I think he played it like a bureaucrat instead of a general. He was commanding but not in the military sort of way more of a boss of an office.
Cain uses my callsign in this movie. Now if only I had left the Navy with his 2 stars instead of the silver oakleave
lmao i love the honesty and the salty reactions in comments. You SHOULD laugh at the silly aspects of movies like this, absolutely. As if this movie is a friggin masterpiece..pure cheese
Gonna disagree about Jon Hamm, he's doing just fine here. Not sure why you think he needs to be angrier (Maybe you've seen him in too many Progressive commercials)😏?
Just felt like he was phoning it in… I didn’t believe him aka his acting .. I know A lot of ppl liked him in this - dunno.. just my reaction🤣
Oh I'm stressed: love when you do that 😂
Penny Benjamin
Was referenced in part one
The admirals daughter
Truly one of the best films in quite some time, and i don't usually even much care about this style of movies.

Haha I was stoked! Also edited for YT copy right neeed to talk! But also SO HYPER for this film and my first couple of RUclips reactions so I have learnt a LOT! Thanks for watching!

🤣🤣🤣
Thank u!
My only issue with this movie is no use of cruise missiles ro takeout radar and SAM systems. Otherwose its one of the greatest sequels ever.
It's sad that Tom's Iron will power could not get anyone better than Giorgio Moroder and Berlin (song - Take my breath away).
Okay so I also wasn't super excited for this movie until I saw it, and I LOVE your reaction to this... but no coffee?! Why?
Right! I was like ugh another reboot then I was like OMG this sequel is UNREAL! I was sooo pumped! Ugh I cut coffee for many reasons! Haha I miss it a lot!
Penny! Penny Benjimen - the 'Admiral's Daughter'......................................
Jon Hamm was weak in this? WTF? Jon Hamm was great. Tom Cruise was great. This is one of the best movies of all time.
This is a really good movie. One of the best? Eh. Important. Wonderfully executed. Not one of the best movies but definitely in the running for best sequels🤷♂️
Haha if Maverick is being a creep in this, the rest of us have no chance
Haha ur fine! Just making jokes! 🤣🤣
This movie was awesome. Do you like time travel movies? One of my favorites combines time travel and aviation. The Final Countdown. (1980) The U.S.S. Nimitz goes back to December 6th, 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz.
Love time travel, have you seen Predestination?? With Ethan Hawk and Sarah Snook? I’ll check that one out! I’m moving into Halloweenie movies for Oct!!!!
@@holddowna "12 Monkeys" is a great one (Bruce Willis & Brad Pitt)
Penny was mentioned twice in the original!
I loved the movie but the final scene was very silly. The su57 pilot uses its supermanuverability only once and then he just kinda sits there waiting to get shot down
For useless information “Mach” is speed of sound, so Mach 10 is going 10x faster than speed of sound
Love this stuff !
Loved the film and reaction. Got to see this in real life today (3rd June) right over my head.
Anyone want a look(not an advert, not even sure if there is any pictures yet) have a look at Torbay Red Arrows... Was amazing.
So, has anyone noticed that TGM is just Star Wars from 1977? Or is it just me?
Top Gun meets Star Wars
Did you get a call sign yet? What about "Flicks"?
When I heard about this movie, I was not really looking forward to it because I just knew they would do it so badly that it would make me retroactively hate the original. I was fully prepared to hate it, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that I loved it.
Ditto!
I had the opposite reaction when I saw the trailers. I felt like this could be it. This would be a great movie unlike the time I saw Star Wars and Jurassic Sequels and damn was I right about it
A Who song in a Bruckheimer movie...who knew?
Lol!
14:30 That wasn’t actually his voice. It’s his son’s voice who is pretty much identical to his voice, computer manipulated to sound sick or whatever
You shouldn't have pushed it beyond Mach 10, Mach 10 means Mach 10, not 10.1, not 10.2, etc. LOL.
Better than the original for me. And your reaction was gold. Enjoyed every second of it. 👍 By the way, is your halloween movie list already full or can I suggest you some horror classics? 😅

Coffin corner is a pilot/ aviation term. Actually means something lol not just a movie metaphor
The actual school is located in NAS Fallon NV not North Island CA. Though the CNAF (Played by Mark Hamm) does have his office at North Island. The Real CNAF has been a USN aviator since 1985
