studied nutritionist from germany here: 0,8g/kg bodyweight is the amount for the general non-active public. There is a safety buffer included, so you technically need less. BUT this does not mean its optimal intake for other reasons like muscle synthesis, satiety etc. As an athlete, you are supposed to consume 1,0-1,5g/kg bodyweight, you can go up to 2g/kg bodyweight (if there are no renal problems). The 1,2-1,5g/pound bodyweight is pretty high but you can do it. Probably wont do too much for you though (maybe the last 5% optimization). For health, its important to consider where you get your protein from though. Meat, especially read meat, has unwanted risks if consumed too much (>300g/week) so focus on atleast half your protein from plants (more if you can, also for the environment and animal welfare)
you can actually get indigestion from a too high protein intake. if so, try to up your protein intake gradually, drink more water, move more, eat more fibre (also slowly upping that).

I'm glad some qualified has chimed in here because I have seen the the same amounts of protein applied in both kg and per lb. To Mak's defense most sources I saw when I was trying to figure out this same conundrum went with the .8-1.2g/lb lean mass to build muscle. The lean mass is key, it's not your actual weight.

I weigh 155 and was told by a doctor to shoot for 75 grams of protein because I'm trying to heal a year and a half old wound. I doubt I reach 75 grams daily, more like 50 grams on average. I was shocked to find out broccoli has protein. Cool. Now I'm starting protein shakes cuz I can't eat 4 to 5 times a day.

Fun fact: Angelina Jolie adopted her first son, Maddox, from a Cambodian orphanage while filming Tomb Raider. This started her journey with the UN Refugee services. She owns property there, and has built infrastructure for multiple communities. She's also a Cambodian citizen. If you look at the movies she directs, you can tell how much Cambodia affected her. She's an awesome human being.

    A medicine student here.
The confusion probably comes from Ashley googling what doctors recommend as the amount of protein you need as a regular person, and Mak searching for the amount of protein athletes recommend to build muscle, which is higher than the amount you need to just be healthy.
That being said, 100g of protein is definitely not too much for Ashley, but whenever you eat differently than you're used to, that can always cause digestion issues. My guess is she usually consumes a very small amount of protein so this was too big of a change in her diet at once.

Thanks for mentioning the landmine rats, they are incredibly! I moved to cambodia and absolutely love this country. I totally get how it is a lot of sadness (hihi, sounds like a good bit for stand-up), but somehow it feels like that sadness makes people even more focused on or grateful for the good. There is so much creativity here, a newly found sense of freedom which is really celebrated, an amazing amount of artists, a thriving lgbtq+ community (with some of the best drag!). But it is an incredibly dark past, and it is good to learn about it, but there is also so much joy and freedom here. Im so grateful to live here 😊 Love you guys

Adding to the bear stories! I've had 3 encounters in the PA Pocono mountains. The first was from a car, but the black bear and her 2 cubs were crossing the road we were taking to our cabin and of course they were going toward it. We didn't see them again, thankfully. The second time we were staying in a different cabin, which was more remote. We were the last cabin on the road and the road extended a bit past the property. That time we had 3 chihuahuas with us and were hanging out at the fire pit on the back side of the house. There wasn't a fence, but the dogs were well behaved, so they were off leash. We spotted a black bear and a couple of cubs meandering their way up the road so we quickly and quietly scooted the dogs inside before they noticed and let the bears walk on by (we were may 70 ft from them). The last time was another cabin that was less remote, it was at the end of a cul-de-sac of 3 cabins and I'd been staying by myself for a night after having my friends up for my birthday a couple days before. I was awoken at 6 am to a loud crash, which turned out to be a black bear and her cub getting into the recycling can, which was full of alcohol containers. They had also dumped out the trash bin looking for goodies. Thankfully, the house had a raised first floor with a small balcony off an enclosed fence, so I was able to be on the balcony to shoo them away. That was kind of funny, because the baby was at that really lanky, unsteady leg point in it's growth and just stared at me, swaying slightly, while Mom ran off. The Mom only got a few feet off the property before realizing that Baby was still at the trash cans, so she came back and got them.
Bonus: not a bear, but when I was young, I was riding a 4-wheeler with my aunt in the Colorado Rockies and she was taking me up an incline so I could better see the lake at the center of town (Lake George, if anybody knows it). You kind of have to wind your way up around big rocks and boulders, but we were in the woods, so as we were approaching the area we wanted, we came around one of the boulders only to come face to face with a mountain lion. It was lounging on one for the boulders, maybe 6 ft from us. Thankfully, my Aunt said that's a good sign because it had probably recently eaten, so we carefully backed our way to the other side of the boulder and kind of glided our way down a bit to not spook the big cat!
Double Bonus: I was deer hunting as a teen and we were hunkered down in a little patch of trees in a field and had a coyote walk right up to me before realizing I was a person, it was close enough I could have touched it. My Dad didn't see it at first and when I made a noise to get his attention, he jumped and scared it off.

    Ok, I'm still laughing!!
Fisrts of all, thabks for doing the episode even when you are not feeling well. I know how much that takes, and I can't be more grateful.
Second: the true measure of Ashley not feeling very good was that she didn't screamed at all at the beginning.
Third: I got totally lost during the protein debate...not my thing. Also I got confused and now I have to go check medical sources, thanks for the homework! 😋
Fourth: The bear chat was illuminating and entertaining, as someone that has almost no big predators in her country. So, yeah...maybe that explains part of the North American being in general.
Fifth: I didn't have my flu and covid shots this past year either due to a similar situation to Aylana. No time to go or not enough time for recovering after. I'm planning to get my covid shot this season. (They just started to provide it here, southern hemisphere)
Sixth and last: Thanks for the laughs, they are worth every penny of my patreon contribution, even if I continue to watch on RUclips. ❤

hahahaha not the Protein debate. As a Nutritionist I laughed so hard. SOOO many conflicting opinions. I have read a LOT of different numbers in my career. Being a muscle mommy / gym bro myself, i opt for 1g per POUND rn. But so many people eat way less. But for building muscle I'd always recommend upping :D Or as a rule of thumb, just make sure you have a main protein source for all of your meals and call it a day (without tracking a whole lot) :)

The problem with black bears is yea they’re the chillest and least likely to attack but when they do it’s cuz they wanna eat you, typically unlike grizzlies which wanna neutralize the threat so sometimes just playing dead works for grizzlies and sometimes polar bears. But, in general, @everyone carry bear spray in bear country.

This is my Canadian friend's bear story. I'm Aussie, she was my housemate, and she's from Quebec. She was on her way to work through a woodsy area. She saw bear prints in the snow. A tree branch happened to drop down over her face. In her mind, it was a bear hand reaching over the top of her head. So she punched directly upward, aiming for the offending bear paw/tree branch, but she managed to punch herself in the face. She got to her workplace, with a bloody nose, running down onto her jacket, and she was laughing hysterically because she'd managed to punch herself in the face because she thought she was self-defending from a bear.

Hey Mak, if I may share my humble and very individual opinion as a person labeled as a “granola mom” (🤪). Most pediatricians I’ve taken my kid to, recommend only to take antipyretics after reaching 104F (for kids) and in between 104F and 107F for adults…
103F is high, but it can still be considered a temperature your body needs to fight whatever it’s fighting.
Just to clarify, I’m JUST talking about antipyretics, NOT antibiotics or other medicines!!
I’m not a doctor, I’m just talking about my experience with pediatricians in Italy and Spain.

"There are so many lovely places like Thailand..."
So un-fun fact: durring the Vietnam War, the b52 bombers that bombed Cambodia and Vietnam, were based in Guam. Unfortunately this meant the flight time between bombing runs was a little long, so the moved the airbases to Thailand. Which was a more convenient place, and allowed for faster turnaround, increasing American bombers efficiency.
It's tough. You can go to the genocide place, or the place that helped with the genocide.
