I listened to this on Spotify, but i wanted to come over and give a little of my pov on the non consent consent thing! I'm ex Mormon and separated from my husband (almost divorced!) i grew up with such an intense shame surrounding sex, that i reacted a lot like Vanessa, even when having strait sex with my husband. The problem was that we were both so young and inexperienced that i would say no, and kind of really mean it, he would think it was more of a "try harder" kind of thing, and keep trying. I had about 0 experience listening to my own intuition so i just let it happen. He definitely didn't intend to do what he did, and when we talked about it several years later (after i was in therapy) he was so upset about it he thought we should get divorced there and then. We tryed to make things work for a couple more years, but with the history, plus a bunch of other stuff, we decided to split up.
This is obviously very different from what happened in Ashley's story! I haven't been with anyone since my husband, but even after the 11 years we were married, i still felt the need to say no, even if i wanted sex. Even if I started it! My ex and i are still good friends and are both looking forward to healing on our own. We got married when i was 20, which really just shouldn't be allowed 😅
