Thank you guys all for the helpful comments! I have a vet appointment scheduled on Friday for Mikey and I will be covering diet for him. I am 90% sure I will be giving him a more “cooked” diet with meat and veggies with a mixture of dry dog food and whatever else my vet suggests. I’ll be sure to update you guys in my upcoming videos!
Where I live vets do not undergo any animal nutrition in their training, possibly a short non-compulsory lecture often held by pet food company representatives. Kind of like you wouldn’t go to a doctor to ask for nutritional advice, you would go to a dietitian.
I would totally love it if you did more videos with Mikey he's super cute!
@@idarahmqvist1373 I totally agree. Most vets are partnered with Hills science diet which has mostly terrible ingredients (of course if you need a prescription food it’s necessary). I’ve seen so many vets recommend food with corn, by products, wheat gluten and so many other fillers.
If you plan on making your food yourself, make sure that you supplement with the necessary vitamins to make it balanced. I’ve seen so many pups become nutrient deficient because of an unbalanced home cook meal. I’d look into bad ingredients for dog food. Meat should always be the first ingredient. Corn can’t be digested. By products are an unnamed meat source that can consist of anything they don’t want to name. Wheat gluten is the stuff they make veggie meat out of. Also kibble actually causes dental disease and it does not prevent it, common myth that sells vet dog food. Sorry im supper passionate about dog food lol
Please don’t switch! Hills is a great brand and homemade diets can be so dangerous. Please trust the advice of your veterinarian and do not switch him off if the Hills food. I am a veterinary student in the US and can attest to the amount of nutrition training that we have that is *not* endorsed by nutrition companies.
Mikey is adorable! but just as an FYI- wet/raw dog food is a lot healthier and natural for dogs to digest and eat. if you do choose to go the kibble route, I’d recommend adding a variety of toppers such as raw eggs, salmon oil, etc to provide more moisture and meet their needs better. the bk shop is really helpful in terms of diet, I suggest you check them out 💕
Yes 🥰 mine is raw fed and I got spooked when he wasn't drinking much 😂 found out that is normal when they get their hydration from their natural food ❤️ and it's surprisingly easy. Paws of prey has great videos on it ❤️
Dogs def can fill your soul and life in a way that other animals cannot. I love my Guinea kids but Dogs have a special place in my heart.
Thats me but with cats haha
Hi! I am a certified veterinary assistant and had to weigh in on the dog food questions since you said you're open to advice.
When it comes to pet food it is always a grey area in terms of what ingredients are better than others. You are correct when it comes to limiting the amount of fillers that are in the food and having a diet that is high in good protein. Blue Buffalo is a no-go for the reasons you stated so thank you for switching in the best interest of the pup!
A lot of consumers are not aware that Royal Canin, Hills Science Diet, and Purina sponsor veterinary clinics, rescues, and breeders which is the reason that they are the most recommended when you go to the vet. My schooling was even sponsored by them, which meant the majority of our training in terms of nutrition was based around recommending those products.
At a certain point once I left school I realized that ingredient wise, a lot of these foods are not superior, and the reasoning behind recommending these products lies in the fact that we are not taught any different.
When people look for "no corn/wheat", they normally go the route of a "grain-free" food. When grain-free foods are made, they normally substitute all grains with legumes or pumpkin. Most veterinarians within recent years are anti "grain free" foods due to a study that was released linking grain-free dog foods to a heart condition called DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy aka enlarged heart). The study was very narrow and done using brands of grain-free foods that use legumes/pea protein as a substitute for grain. There are many different types of grain-free food, some are pumpkin based and some are legume based, which was the problematic trait. There is no evidence linking non pea based grain-free foods to DCM. There has been a surge of people switching onto Hills and other vet-recommended foods with the fear of DCM. This food has become a very popular switch due to the fact that it has both grains, which is recommended by veterinarians, while also being free of corn and wheat, which is what people don't want in the typical Hill's Science diet recipes. The part that is confusing from my perspective is - We are taught not to recommend grain-free foods because there is a link between legumes/pea protein and DCM. However, Science Diet No Corn Puppy has pea protein in it, and it's fairly high up on the ingredient panel. From what I've been taught, it is a very odd decision. I cannot give you an answer on whether or not this is good or bad, but it is something to bring up and research nonetheless. Ingredient wise, this food is much better than the standard Hills recipes because, as you said, it doesn't contain the fillers we don't want. However, if I could personally change the recipe I would remove that pea protein ingredient. If this is a concern, switching to a grain-free food that is not legume based would remove both the fillers as well as the pea concern. Not sure where you're located or what foods are locally available, but again it's just something to think about. :)
I hope this wasn't too confusing to read, have a good day!
Excellent advice! After the big recall in prescription food a few years ago I became obsessed with researching pet foods. My newest ridgeback also had anal gland issues causing me to need to investigate further, his poops tended to be soft.
It took a long time and working with my vet along with my own research to learn he needed a couple of days a week of raw/higher bone content and then the rest a high quality kibble or wet food ( I love wet food for added moisture as I feel dogs and cats just don't get enough moisture unless they are hunting their own foods).
@@jrmints80 That's very true. Pet nutrition is actually so interesting when you begin to look into it, plus it can be a very fun thing for us too. There's so many different things people can do to improve meals that often go unthought of. Like you said- adding wet food, a broth, goats milk, or simply rehydrating with water! I'm sure your doggie eats better than most. x
I'm in love with Mikey! But just letting you know, I work at a pet store, and since working there I've learned what dog foods are good or bad. Science diet definitely isn't "bad", there are worse foods out there. But I would go for brands like fromm, merrick, or earthborn. But feel free to do your own research and find what is best for you!
It’s not his dog so it wouldn’t be smart to change up the dogs food
as well as open farm & nutrisource!! 🤩
@@rh7968 he said around 6:00 that his feels friend feels austin can provide a better life for him :) so mikey is his officially his doggy now 👍🏻
Orijen as well !
My poodle has THE most sensitive stomach after much research I landed up on I and Love and You brand I feed the Sea recipe ( fish ) and cook food as well . Every dog is different good luck in your quest for the best choice for Mikey ❤️
Super cute pup! I love his markings and coat!
I would recommend considering delaying his neuter. There’s benefits to allowing him to mature a bit before neutering. Allow his growth plates to close more. Pediatric spay and neuter can lead to a lot of issues later in life.
It’s up to you, but I definitely recommend at least looking into that a bit! Best of luck with him. :)
yes agreed ^^
waiting until two years of age or not neutering at all is usually best for their growth!
@@odyssey.theoddity not neutering at all can lead to testicle cancer tho.
@@Zoeclarke01 There are pros and cons to both neutering/spaying and deciding not to. Neither is a clear cut decision as both increase risks for different issues. Waiting until two years is the standard to ensure proper growth and avoiding issues associated with paediatric neuters. I personally will not be surgically neutering any future male dogs unless medically required - chemical castration is more likely. Any female dogs will be spayed due pyometra risk not being worth it, but I will still wait as long as possible [2 to 3 years].
Came here to say the same, my chihuahua was a pediatric spay and I can see where it stunted his growth, he looks very frail and wonky compared to male huas that were able to fully develop.
There was a really awesome study published on the pros and cons of altering based on breed but I believe the general consensus was that pediatric spays are usually more harm than good especially with males. I would just encourage you and anyone else to do your research and have a dialogue with your vet. Worse case he requires a little more management so he doesn't get anyone's intact girl in the few extra months until you get him altered
I don’t comment very often but I need to thank you! I have a piggie with ovarian cysts and a 10 week old pig who now has a drain in her neck due to reoccurring cysts from a bacterial infection seeing your journey of getting your pigs better has helped me be strong for my piggies! Thank you ❤️
Dry food is actually harder for dogs to digest versus dog food with moisture like wet food ! And it doesn’t clean teeth :\ You can soak the dry food in water though to add moisture!
When I saw the intro I was like “aww noooo Mikey loves you so much I wish he was yours not a friends!!!” And now I’m very satisfied
I don't have many recommendations for dog food as I'm still learning too, but the only thing I would suggest is putting a tablespoon (ish) of water into dry food kibble. its pretty hard for dogs to digest, especially with how short of a digestive system they have. it takes a job from the digestive system and means that more nutrients are able to be absorbed :)
Dry food actually does the opposite of helping with their teeth! It causes more issues because of all the carbs and sugars. They do much better on a wet or raw diet. I think you should do some more research on that!
Love him, soooo adorable!!
Austin… you are such a beautiful human, you make my day! 💜
Welcome Mikey! He is soooo cute!
49:48 "if you guys have made it this far...."
Me: 😁💕oh I'm going to watch it twice, no worries!! 😂😂
We LOVE a long vlog from you🤩💯I’m so excited Mikey is yours he’s the cutest 😍🥰💛 & I hope your piggies feel better & have a speedy recovery 🙏🏽 (I wrote before I seen you build the nebulizer) I just want to say how blessed those piggies are to have you. You take the absolute best care of them ,so freaking immaculate Austin✨🤌🏽🥹💛 👏🏽
Please wait till he is 2 years old to get him neutered, it's best to allow his hormones to actually be in his system and to allow his growth plate to fully close. The hormones will let him mature and in the long run he will have a more docile and calm behavior. I made the mistake to get one of my dogs spayed at 4 months and she had that puppy behavior and so many behavior issues because of it meanwhile my shih tzu who was able to have one heat has a more docile, calm, mature and over all well rounded. It's your choice but it's better to wait till he is atleast 2
I didn't fully watch your video when I first commented however I used to feed preformatrin and then open farm and my dogs Excell on it. Science diet, science hills, Purina one, blue Buffalo are some of the major food brands that have had recalls before. As for weaning him from his previous food give 3/4 of a cup of his current food then 1/4 of a cup of the new food. Kibble is also in general not the most nutrient dense since it's mostly full of carbonation to create that kibble form. To add nutrition I would wet down the food and instead of cooked meat feed it to him raw as it's better for him as well. I primarily feed raw in kibble form with a raw food topper with about a cup of water to my dogs food and I've noticed their coat, teeth, poop and over all health being alot better. To help with teeth health feed chew treats two to three times a day for 15 minutes to 30 minutes to allow him to really clean his teeth as kibble being filled with fillers and carbonation so as it cleans it also makes his teeth dirty again. I really hope I make sence but the best thing I can recommend is talk to your vet and talk to a nutritionist about what your looking for in a dog food and your goal for your dog. For example have a food that can fill him up faster, help with his coat, teeth, health and whatever else you want to have for your dog and they can direct you to the best food/ food combinations for Mickey, your life style and both your needs.
Also for Mickey's Toy I would use it as a training opportunity to teach him manor, tricks and other fun stuff since he is so Toy motivated it would be an amazing reward for him. I hope it help but mickey is your dog and I have no doubt you will treat him, love him and care for him the same way you do with you pigs because your an amazing animal dad and an amazing person in general. I really like this video keep them coming and can't wait to see the changes coming to the pig room.
This has been debunked MANY times by actual veterinarians and scientist 😅 they only recommend this for very large breed dogs
@@servicedogangelthunder135 I’ve been going through comments about dog food and you’re the first person who I actually agree with! For the dental health, have you ever used an enzymatic toothpastes? Pet smile is a great option to boost up their dental care. Wetting the food (maybe with bone broth) is a fantastic option. Open farm is a fantastic company. If they want fresh food, just food for dogs (fantastic) or farmers dog are solid options. Raw food is just fantastic though. Good job mate
Welcome home Mikey. Enjoy your new home. 🤗😍🤩💖
I am so happy for you ! Mikey is so so sweet ! You are such an incredible Furdad love your videos and I glad I found your channel through Sarah and Alyssa .
Omg, did anyone else notice the human arms and hands in the shed when he was talking about his dog. That creeped me out so much lol
Love the Piggies Choice Hay rack!! I have one for my girls and it seriously helps a lot of hay getting all over the place. I’m pretty sure I remember Saskia saying there are no bottoms so piggies can’t go inside and use the bathroom in there and ruin the wood!
Btw your dog is incredibly cute, that mix is just adorable!! 😍
Mickey can sense your positive energy that’s why he adores you
Hi Mickey!! Can't wait to see you grow in the upcoming videos!!!
I totally recommend feeding wet and dry dog food! :) or cooking your own food is obviously amazing, I did that for a while with my dog as well and she loved it. It helps them stay hydrated! I loveeeee your little pupper
I bought one of the vacuumn after I saw yours and it's working fabulous, thanks!
Well done with making the nebuliser, never thought that you could make one like that..
Ahhh HE IS SO ADORABLE!!!! 💛😍
Mikey is so cute he is a lucky boy he is going to have lots of fun living with you 💕
Love the new vacuum. Congrats. But love your new lovely boy. He looks like a Tibetan spaniel. Exactly. I’m so glad he has a great home.
Welcome Mikey
Mikey is adorable and you can tell he is in love with you!
I love him!!! 😍
I love love love my veggie spinner it will change your life 😂❤️
Thank you for the video !
The best food for dogs is the one you cook for him. I have a dog with tracheal collapse, heart disease, and a crappy liver. I cook for him and he's turning 15 in August. He eats turkey, lamb, sometimes fish., with wild rice and vegetables and fruits like blueberries. As for their teeth, dogs should have reg teeth cleanings. I cook one batch per week.
Love the piggie paintings
Your dog is so cute!!🥰
Love seeing the chickens, you should definitely film them more!
Awesome vlog. Mikey is so cute
Did anyone else see the person in the shed when he was outside with Mikey? I swear there was somebody in it you could see their arms.
OMG i was about to comment the same thing!! but i was looking to see if anyone else saw it or i was trippin out 🤣
Seems like you got some good food recommendations for you new pup. I personally love Fromm and First Mate. I did want to put it out there that "feeding kibble is good for teeth" is the same as saying a bag of chips is good for our teeth. I would love to recommend going to a locally owned pet shop that specializes in just pet products not selling animals, they will probably have a ton of good info for you 💜 congrats on the new family member!
Welcome Mikey to the pig room family 🙂🥰🙂
Adorable dog!!
Love you without the mustache! ❤
You can also try Health Extension dry dog food, you can find it in Chewy and My dogs really like its. The food has a lot of helthing things and ingredients that help with digestin and their hair. We give them kibble in the morning + afternoon and at night I give them food I cook just so that they are not always eating kibble.
Mikey is so cute. It may not be a guinea pig added but it is still so cute🥰love your vids
How cute love your dog
Something not a lot of people talk about how raw food is live, ie not sterile like kibble/canned food. The bacteria and microorganisms in raw food and tripe is very beneficial for the gut microbiome to stay healthy and resilient, maintaining gut and immune system health. Some raw food brands pasteurize with pressure I believe, so that’s something to keep in mind.
If you’re interested in researching raw diet for your doggo I would recommend it ! Or we use freeze dried raw . There are a lot of amazing brands that use whole food species appropriate ingredients. What a kind soul for taking that doggo in !
Love Mickey ♥️✨♥️
I think the most natural and best food for a dog is a raw diet 😊 pre made or home made.
I REALLY LOVE YOUR VIDEOS
i love and hate your mustache at the same time u look good with it and without it!!
I herd you can use golf balls to act as eggs in the nest to help them lay eggs.
Oh my gosh, your grass looks so nice and soft. Mine is so stiff and rough that I can't walk on it barefoot. I wish I could, though!
The tan/white colored older chicken looks like a rooster.
He looks like a game breed and like he's been dubbed. So you can't use the comb and wattles to tell!
But roosters have very long and pointed hackle (neck) and sickle (tail) feathers. Which he definitely has!
The hen that you were petting also is missing some feathers on the back of her head. This can happen when they're with a rooster from him breeding them.
mikey soo cute 🐶 . aww i miss having chickens 😭🐓
Hills has had a history of recalls. Just an fyi. Your pup is adorable.
Hello, I love this video how you added all your pets in one to get us to smile 😃. I actually think I'm going to get that vacuum. In need of a new one that is more convenient to pick up them little poops. The piggies are expensive but worth it. And you do take very good care and spend a lot of money on them. One of our piggies might need the incubator also watched her video. Don't pay attention to the backlash of people. That's why I haven't shared pictures of my piggies yet on any channels 😕. They shouldn't sell the cages in the pet store if they're not big enough for the piggies. But we do take great care and try to spoil them when we can. BTW love ❤️ everything you make. We're also using wood shaving still, one day we'll have enough to use fleece and get some of them cuddle houses and the great tunnels you make are so awesome!! 👍 It makes me feel a little bad to watch and not be able to get everything for our piggies. This is a question getting thrown out there? Do you donate any of your old items? My kids are grown up now, but I have two piggies and one grandpig so total of 3. I love ❤️ them I didn't know how much happiness they would 💓 bring to my life 💓. Apologize for such long comment. Just wanted to share today.
Such a cute dog, i would recommend looking into raw feeding, its alot to take in at the start but there are so many youtube videos ect about it to help, i know its not for everyone i just like feeding animals as naturally as possible and have had nothing but great results after switching to raw
If you want to feed dry kibble, feed Orijen. If you would be comfortable, then feed raw!
So i got 2 kittens about a month ago and did some research regarding diet and health issues related to their diet and learnt that puppies should have similar care ( keeping in mind that cats are obligate carnivores and dogs are omnivores)
1- kibble does not clean teeth its equivalent to people eating cookies or hard/ brittle food
2- wet food is better than kibble in the sense of it providing moisture to prevent UTIs in the future. Good quality Hydrated kibble is just as good as wet food( dogs are better than cats in drinking water so might not be as important for puppies)
3- no matter how much water ur pup drinks its not gonna be even close to their daily recommended intake.
4- raw food is the new thing that seems to keep em healthy but needs alot of research and is quite overwhelming tbh ( its equivalent to giving guinea pigs and parrots their veggies, some people give it as a booster to kibble and wet food while others omit kibble entirely)
So u might wanna look into it but do not feel pressured into switching ur pup to raw
And lastly i do not live in the US so idk what food brands u have in pet stores but i heard orijen was widely available in pet shops and its a really good brand.
I apologize for writing a long comment.
This is a brilliant idea, a Ginnie pig nebuliser. I have a Ginnie pig with a URI. The vet has given her antibiotics but where did you get the supplies for the nebuliser Austin. My poor baby girl is struggling to breath 💓🥺🐹
Was there a person in the shed when you were playing outside with Miley? It looks like there is an arm moving back there. Cute piggies and cute pup!
Hi Austin! I wanted to send u a few paintings of the piggies but wasn’t sure what your P.O. Box was or where I could send it to if I could? Thank you!!
It is strange when I searched "guinea pigs" on RUclips, your site was way down on the list. I would have thought it would be one of the first. I don't have any pigs nor do I intend to. But I can live vicariously through your channel and others.
I wish i had a doggie ): your puppy is so adorable!
L-Lysine is great for Upper Respiratory Infections.
OMG, Mikey is so living an adorable, I'm very happy for you, he's perfect to complete the family.
I don't trust hills brand anymore, last year their formula had too much vitamin (don't remember which one) that caused some issues with a variety of dogs. Royal canin is a very good quality brand. He will need the puppy food until he's one year old, and like with pigs you have to switch little by little the old food and the new food so he doesn't get an upset tummy.
I watched that video from Saskia, very informative. I hope both Winston and Wanda get well in no time. Great video, I love long videos.
Royal canine can include ingredients like corn which is indigestible, by products which is the unnamed meat source that is too gross to put on the labels, soy or what protein which is basically just veggie meat. You also want meat to be the first ingredient!
@@meaganhelbig1824 yes, a diet grain free is always better
Saskia has made those with bottoms now .
You should do a video explaining how you picked the pigs names. I love the name Vision! I was just going to ask where you got the bane from & you said something about Marvel as I typed this 🤣🤣🤣
Mikey is super cute, I'm so glad that he has a forever home with you! You've probably received this comment already but unfortunately dry food is not good for teeth, I liken it to a human eating cookies, the only thing that happens is you get cookie crumbs stuck between your teeth. The best thing for maintaining their dental health is raw meaty bones :) A lot of vets don't like raw diets, but that is because if you do it incorrectly it is unbalanced, and an unbalanced diet is worse for you than a balanced mediocre food (such as kibble). Best of luck on your new doggy adventure :)
I almost bought that vacuum earlier but it doesn't look like a good vacuum for a guinea pig room because I'd have to empty it way more than other vacuums
Whyyyyy couldn't i have a son like youuuuu?!!!!!!
the type of medicine that's in the bag used for the nebulizer what's that called?
I nanny for an emergency veterinarian and she uses the same food for her pup!
Hi I was wondering where you get your hay from?
I get it from my local farm
What a hottie!! lol ... I have to admit I do like ya better with out the stache ... but you do you boo! I also wanted to add .... I just tried putting the piggy hay in a high side open top litter box ... and I have to tell ya ... hardly any hay on the fleece now ... and they love hanging out in there eating. Less poops all over the cage as well!!
LMAOOOOO I guess I should have watched the whole video before I commented hahaha
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The only thing I would suggest is to look into raw food for your doggo. It's highly expensive though.
I used to have only 8 pigs now I have 9. I have only one vacuum and one pig that isn't afraid of it and it's funny. Also just got a new baby pig born with a head tilt. You have any tips for her? All other reasons for a head tilt have been ruled out by a vet. She's found someone to be her mom and two best friends. But I haven't found any info on the genetic head tilt. Help?
I like to incorporate bone broth into my dog food!
AUUUSSTIINN!!! Read me please!!
I really don’t think Hills is that great but I’m glad it’s corn and soy free as most of their food isn’t like that. I saw other comments recommending Fromm (an awesome Wisconsin based company) Open Farm (kick ass vegan company) and Nurtisouce (easy on the gut). Nutrisouce had a small/medium breed puppy that I think is a great option. Also the thing about kibble being good for their teeth is a myth, the ingredients that binds kibble together is what causes teeth plaque. Wet food isn’t flawed as a whole, companies like First mate and weurva have very clean ingredients. Wet food isn’t as important in dog diets as cats because dogs have the desire and intuition to drink still water as cats do not. If you’re going down the fresh food train that’s AWESOME!!! Just make sure that it’s complete and balanced as most home food isn’t. Just food for dogs has a supplement packet to balance out their recipes which I think is the healthiest and safest option for food prepping for your dog.
I have been working in the pet industry for a really long time and I love to help!!
I agree that Fromm is a great choice! I live in WI and stand by their products.
Your probably gonna be suprised but in my contry we would pay around 40 dollars (i live i europe in euros 30to 35) for vet checkups and the medication together so i must say im lucky💗😃
48:14 what's that behind you in the shed???
What breeds is the chickens ?
Could they have allergies? I know dog & cats can have them but I'm not sure about piggies.
I Recommend a kibble called aden
I would trust you with pet sitting for me. Maybe a new small venture for you? We have a business here in Tasmania that looks after GPS and rabbits at their place while owners are on holiday.
What breed is mikey? Love ur channel and piggies ❤
48:15 Is there someone sitting in the shed? It kind of creeped me out...
I'm a retired vet tech. Do not feed grain free food to your dog. It can cause DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy).
Definately do some research about neutering. It has been shown that you should wait as long as possible, if you at all have to neuter. The lack of growth hormones can affect their bones I believe, and other important functions that impact their health. I have two Tibetan spaniel males, I will not be neutering if it isn’t medically necessary or stressful for the dog to be intact. In Norway it is illegal. Before (yrs back) in Sweden it was illegal as well.
❤️👍
Omg you shaved your mustache 😲
You should get Insurance for your Animals if you don’t have all ready
the best diet for dogs is a raw food diet.
Austin I'm not trying to tell you what to do!! But I am concerned about that bright light by I think Jojo it's going to blind him because it's to close to him!!!
Everybody saying that he should wait with neutering needs to back off a bit. By now it's probably already done. But it's actually sad to keep them and not neutered and have raging hormones they cannot act upon. They get more calm for a reason once helped.
i check youtube every hour to see if you post....BUT U HAVENT
IN TEN DAYS. whatever lol
this wasn't supposed to be mean or hate btw...i love your vids so much that's why i said that
