No one can toss a box in the air and catch it like you Rodney!
ha ha, i want to se him doing it whit Gloomhaven
Thank you! My daughter bought this game for my son and he has been begging me to play. We played a few different scenarios and he loved it!
So glad this turned out to be a good gift, and was enjoyed!
I don't know what kind of sorcery you employ, Rodney, but your tutorial videos actually make me want to get out games I own but haven't played in a while. Genius.
Ha! Rumor has it, I'm a warlock!
That lid spin at the end was hawt.
@@BbBb-zx6sx there is none, he’s just a beast
I am so glad you did this! Memoir 44 is one of my favorite games. "Watch it Played" is a tremendous resource for both old and new gamers alike. So many great games get overlooked in the race to get the new 'hotness'. I like new stuff too, but "Power Grid", "Catan", "Stone Age", "Kingsburg", "Castles of Burgundy", "Lost Cities", "Lewis and Clark", "Puerto Rico", and many many more - are classics that deserve to be discovered all over again. Well done Rodney - keep up the fantastic work! - On a side note, when I want to introduce a new game to my wife she wants to know if there is a Watch it Played video first. She wants Rodney to teach her instead of me! Should I be worried??
Hey man you are not alone.
Whenever I try to show my wife some tutorial videos on a board game I want to purchase to play with her, she will ask is there a video with Watch It Played out for this game? If not I'm not watching it (and there goes my chances of getting the game).
Sigh Rodney you are not making this easy for some of us.
I am happy that we can "team up" with those teaches :)
That was the BEST box flip ever. And as soon as the video started I couldn't help but notice how many of the games in view I love. Mission Red Planet, Mansions of Madness, Eldritch Horror, Brass Birmingham...one day need to play a game with you, Rodney!
Shane and Stuff I concur. The USA judge gives it a 10.0.
I’m a teacher but he is my teacher! The best explanation of games anywhere! Oh, and thank you, thank you, thank you for saying dice plural and die singular!
Brother. I made the mistake of accepting that language is changing, and dice has become an accepted form of singular. But now people are saying dices. NOOOOOOO!
Heh, I've noticed that it seems to be an international difference. In the UK they seem to use dice for both.
I grew up in the US and live in the Australia. I’m an English as a Second Language teacher. I use die for singular but you’re right, languages evolve. I don’t believe die has yet but we are witnessing it and, although I cry about it, it’s fine for language to change 😊👍🏿
I'm ok with Dice as singular now as I know language evolves. I am not ok with dices as plural. I'm pretty sure this is confusion coming form non-english speakers who see dice being used singular so they apply the plural and make it dices. I'm seeing this all over the place.
@@ShaneandStuff I'm reading this four year cold grammar comment for the first time - under a rulebook explanation of memoir 44 out of all things - and I actually learned something. I think most esl speakers just use dices.
Awesome! Only 35 expansions to go!
I just want you to know, typically if I see that you have made a how to play, I know the game is worth getting, solely off of that fact. Thank you for teaching me easily 30 different board games over the years
So nice to know these have been helpful - thanks for the kind words and happy gaming :)
An oldie but an absolute classic!
Thanks for checking it out!
Hey man. I love your videos. Always straight to the point and very clear explanations. Best on RUclips.
Thank you kindly David!
Even when I am not interested in the game, its fun to watch your videos because of your clean and organized presentation both verbally and cinematically.
Thanks Ken, very kind of you to say!
Memoir 44 and Watch it Played, a great combo. Thanks Rodney and DoW!
It was great to get their support on this one!
No kidding, your timing on this is impeccable. I was thinking this morning of looking into this and within 5 minutes got your RUclips notification. Thanks for such great content, and for being awesome!
We don't see each other often, but clearly the time we have, has put us in sync!
I normally don't like war games, but Memoir'44 is the exception. Played this several times with Overlord rules (8 players) and it has always been a blast. It's a game that is easy to learn and has a great mix of planning and tactics without getting bogged down in tons of rules and minutiae (looking at you there Advanced Squad leader).
Glad you've enjoyed this game!
Really well explained, as usual. I love this game and its fantasy version, Battlelore.
Thanks!
Try spinning Terra Mystica like that! Love the content Rodney, thanks for your fantastic explanations!
One of the very top game explanations I have ever seen and I have watched a lot of them. Excellent audio and video (close up to show detail is well done). Very clear talking, rule descriptions, and examples used. We are big game players and trying new ones quite often.
Thanks so much for the kind feedback - happy gaming!
Been waiting for this one, Rodney. Great job as always! Also happy belated Father's Day...
Thank you Mark!
I love the card holder.....nothing throws my cards everywhere when I bump it better!
They're pretty great!
You do a great job explaining and your videos always zoom in on the action. My son and I watch every time we open a new game. Thank you so much. !!
That's so great to hear Tom - Have a wonderful time paying!
Had this in cellophane for a while and have a game day coming up so this is perfect timing! Thanks Rodney
Awesome - hope you have a great time with it!
Watch it played is the best board game show on the net! You make tutorials so easy and fun! I buy most of my games after watching your videos , never stop!
Thanks so much - I hope to keep it up as long as possible!
Omg it finally happened!!!
You are allowed to say that when Star Wars: Rebellion lands. ;-)
Good memory Maui :)
Thumbs up right away for still doing the box flip. Also for the great run through. 😃👍
Thanks Dew!
After all these years I still have to add this to my collection, but hey thanks so much for this one Rodney. I have Heroes Of Normandie, so I still feel a need to get this one too now more than ever. :D
Hope you enjoy it Steve!
Great box flip. Wonderful instructions. Plus, you seem like a guy anyone would want to play games with. Well Done!
Thank you Mark - glad you enjoyed :)
always my go to how to play. excellent material and presentation as usual. ty for all you do!
Very kind of you to say Rogue!
Very helpful! Thank you! Just bought the game and started playing with the family.
I hope you had a great time playing!
Just bought this - very helpful. Thank you!
So glad to hear it - have a great time playing!
I LOVE this game. I’m happy to see it’s getting a bit of renewed attention to coincide with the new Flight Plan expansion.
Felt like the perfect opportunity to go over the base game!
There are several tutorials on how to play Memoir out there. This one is in my top two! Nice job Rodney!
So glad you liked it!
Rodney that board spin is legit!
*bows*
Thank you once again for a great explanation! Looking forward to getting my grandson (10) involved with it. The figures will keep his interest and his competitiveness will keep it entertaining!
Have a great time playing together John!
Just purchased this game, my first stop is to the excellentl/review/description as always Rodney, power to you my friend... 👍🖖🏼
Thank you David!
High quality video footage and explanation 👌. A joy to watch 👍
Thank you Max, glad you enjoyed!
Had it on its shrink wrap for about 6 months, now just about to play, thanks to this video.
So glad this is going to be helpful! Have fun playing Eugenio!
Again, absolutely fantastic tutorial. Keep it up. Thanks a lot!
Thank you kindly!
You are a legend thank you so much I got this game last christmas and just now got to learn it!
Great present! Have fun playing :)
This is a great game. Played several times. I bought Samurai Battles a while back but havent had a chance to play. Supposed to have very similar rules
Yes, it's based on a similar system (and also by the same designer!)
Rodney, my 6 yo WW2 buff thanks you for this teach! 👦🏻
Stupendous video! Thanks Rodney!
Glad you enjoyed Donald - have fun playing!
Whenever I find a new board game I always look up how to play it, for some reason. Great video!
Glad you liked it!
Great walkthrough, thanks!
You're very welcome!
Great overview as usual.
Thank you kindly!
Just got few days back. So I was playing it right. The way something Sam Healey said in another video about moving and attacking. I thought I had explained the rules wrong. I'm always the teacher, your videos always help me.
Very nice to hear!
Who would've thought about putting Axis and Allies and Battle Cry together. Richard Borg. Great game and good video for the younger viewers also.
Glad you enjoyed it Tim!
I'm really thankful for these how to play videos
Maybe a Twilight Imperium HTP somedy
Glad you enjoy!
I would REALLY like to see you play through the New Flight Plan!
Perfectly explained thank you very much.
You're very welcome - I hope you have a great time playing!
An amazing presentation/explanation. Nice one.
Thank you very much!
Okay, complete aside. I am not a huge Spiderman fan, or Punisher, more into IDW and Dark Horse comics, but I had to look up your Amazing Spiderman with the first appearance of the Punisher! Props for the little extra nugget of geek-ness!
It was a kind gift from a great group of friends :)
That was very helpful. Thank you.
Very glad you enjoyed!
This game looks great, sort of an easier version of Axis and Allies. I am not sure if my wide will be interested. I will check with her. As a military history buff, I would definitely be interested! Great job as usual, excellent flipping start!
Great explanation!
Thank you kindly!
The best game reviewer ever!!!!!
You are onto what tempts me.
My favourite game of all time.
one of your videos is 1000% better than a review because i know if i wanna play or not without any bias by a reviewer
Very nice to know you've found these video helpful Joshua!
Excellent tutorial!
Thanks Joe!
Great video, thanks
Glad you enjoyed Steve!
Late to the game on this but great video with high production values and exceptional clarity. I've been on the fence about Memoir '44 for ages, the main thing that puts me off being the comments I've about some of the scenarios being heavily weighted in favour of one side, by as much as 70/30. On the one hand, many battles were and on the other hand, I guess both players, unless they accept the unfair nature of war, want an equal chance of winning. Tough call LOL. I recall the Flight Plan not being highly thought of at first? Maybe New Flight Plan is better?
For people who have concerns about scenario balance, the game recommends (I might even say this in the video), that you can play the scenario twice and switch sides for the matches, with players combing their scores from both games
Excelent video!!
Thanks Jani!
Great Game!!
Glad you've been enjoying!
Concise nice 👍🏼
Thanks Michael!
Outstanding.
Thanks Jon!
Just received the game (it got "stuck" in Covid-9), so of course the first thing to do is to Watch It Played. Thanks, Rodney!
Have a great time playing Thomas!
thanks, now i fully understand the game
So nice to hear - I hope you have a great time playing!
Hedgehog XD, tank trap. Great vid
Thanks!
Hi Rodney, a question about moving on sand: Can a tank move its 3rd move onto the beach sand if neither of the first two were on the sand?
Nope, but check here for all the details: www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44/en/content/cards_compendium/?id=terrain_1
Good board game
I would love to see you do spirit island in a video!
Thanks for the interest!
Thanks for the tutorial I’m going to get the boared game 👌🏻
Have a great time playing!
Hi Rodney, as always i am grateful for your teachings, but i am curious if a unit may join another unit in a movement step to form a full four unit, (e.g. two infrantry joins another two infantry). Thanks in advance for your time!
Hey Mark, I'm always happy to assist with rules that might be unclear or are not addressed in the video, but if they have been covered in the video itself, I need to direct you there (too many comments for me to manage as one person otherwise). Keep in mind, many of the tutorials have an index in the description to help you find the related rule.
15 yr anniversary how to play. NICE!
Thx
This game looks so incred. Battlecry but ww2 style, and improved????? Nice video!
Glad you enjoyed Brandon. I hope you get a chance to try it.
Like the homage to older games. Please please please do through the ages.
Glad you've enjoyed this coverage!
I talk a bit about game requests here: ruclips.net/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/видео.html&t=342
Great play review as always, have you made a video about the Great War centenary edition?
Hey David, no I haven't.
Well... I have recently bought the Great War centenary edition, and sadly the reviews and play throughs on you tube, don’t hold a candle to Rodneys excellent reviews. I realise that memoir 44 is very similar, however TGW CE is sufficiently different to merit a video. Here’s hoping, and keep up the good work guys, thank you. 👍🖖🏼
im new in this game but im starting to love it, just one question when is referring to a unit order (lets said is an infantry unit) its mean that i can follow the order in different ways:
1. move two hex
2. move one hex and combat (if is in range)
but what about if i dont want to move that unit?, the order may be considered only applying combat?
greets from Panama!
You do not have to move if you don't want to. The rule is that you can move UP to 2 hexes, but that include moving 0 hexes. Hope that helps, and glad to hear you're enjoying the game :)
15:40 .... LoS is blocked if it goes between two hexes along a hex spine where the hexes on both side would block ... right...?
Assuming I am picturing your example correctly, yes (sometimes text is tough for specific examples :) ).
21:00 the right Panzer 4 does not feel like fighting today
A great follow-up video to this would be a How to Play Red Alert video since it uses the same basic mechanics.
Thanks for the interest!
Good
Interesting. Maybe I'll give it a shot.
Thanks for checking it out!
22:00 is the medal, in a town "removed" if an Allied player captured it and then was eliminated or moved from that hex? Could another Allied unit attempt to capture it, for a second time?
It goes back to the hex if the unit in that space is eliminated, so it could be recaptured.
What is the best way to remember which units were moved for the battle phase?
Also, some cards like Direct from HQ says move 4 units of choice - does that mean I can move units from ANY sector?
You could find a little cube or other marker to put with the units you moved. And yup, if it says 4 units of your choice, they can be from any combination of sectors.
WOW! Memoir '44. Thanks for the rules video Rodney. How long ago was it that you mentioned on your channel that a future game to be featured would be Memoir '44? Might have been year 1 or 2. I played this game at Capital Game Expo in Ottawa a few years ago (unfortunately the expo is now defunct). I loved the game so I bought my own copy, but I have yet to get my copy to the table.
I think it was within that first year. I can't find the video now :)
@@WatchItPlayed I guess you mentioned it at the end of Small World, then you did this follow-up to change what game would be next. Be sure to bask in the glory of your Movember moustache ruclips.net/video/jeZtjAUAriI/видео.html
Question: If there are two units side by side in front of me can I draw line of site directly/straight down the edge between the two?
Hope that makes sense and thanks for the video!
Hey Joe, that would block line of sight, since line of sigh is blocked on both sides of that line. You'll find a good example of that in the rule book on Page 9. Hope that helps!
Watch It Played thanks! What about if one is further ahead than another? But there’s still one each side?
@@JoeFrogz My understanding is that line of sight is still blocked, as there are still blocking elements on both sides of the line, even though they aren't directly side by side.
Watch It Played that makes sense I would say.
Thanks for you help and keep up the good work!
Rodney, have you played any other Commands & Colors games? If so do you have a favorite?
I've also played Battlelore, but none of the others.
I have one question, can you buy boards for this game or do you just use the basic board with the beach?
There are boards you can buy as expansions, but mostly you end up getting new tiles to create new scenarios/settings.
@@WatchItPlayed thanks!
Any recommendation for 2player Dad vs Son to play? PC or board game...
Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - but hopefully you see a few games on here that might be what you are looking for!
Hello, everybody! One question: does somebody know what scale (approximately) are the mini-tanks used in the game?
I'm not sure, but maybe someone else knows.
Can you only attack with units you ordered to move?
You can only attack with units you "activated" (whether you moved them or not): ruclips.net/video/8Cil0XBhYPY/видео.html
Oh god, let your addiction begin and better grab some expansions while you can and be sure to check online euro stores for hard to find ones.
Just got this game. Can units that have not been given a command attack if it has an available target? Came up in our first game.
@@paulcooverjr.6947 Hi there, only a unit targeted by a card can activate.
@WatchItPlayed awesome , thanks alot. Seems logical, but my buddy and have played so many types of war games. Appreciate the information.
@@paulcooverjr.6947 Yes, unlike some games where everything can do something, here you are limited by the cards you play. You can think of it as representing the limited capacity to communicate, or get quality info from command during a battle.
Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but new guy here. When it comes to bunkers, sandbags, and retreat flags - when an attacker rolls a flag (which the first is ignored) does a flag rolled in an attack on a subsequent turn (not by another unit adjacent to the bunker/sandbag, but after the other player/team attacks) count as the “second” flag and thus result in a retreat, or do both flags have to be rolled in the same turn to get a unit to retreat? wasn’t sure if I had to keep track throughout the game of how many “first flags” were ignored or if the counter resets with each turn. Hope this all made sense!
Just within a turn. It resets, so you don’t have to try to keep track.
Watch It Played thanks!!
Rodney I am not criticizing but why 44 now? Just curious. I loved the video and with a huge collection of games its a great refresher so when I want to play I can watch and go. My only problem with DOW is some expansions go out of print and if you are pardon the pun late to the game they go for huge prices if you want them.
This is a game I had announced I would cover on the channel (several years ago), but then never got it fit into the schedule. They just released a new expansion, so this seemed like a good time to revisit this game. That said, I've been sprinkling in older titles on the channel for awhile now. I like new games, but I'm also a fan of creating videos for games that are "new" to people who are just entering the hobby.
I only have one question left in my mind.
So artillery that starts in a bunker can't move out from it, but if it has to retreat does it move out from it or loses a unit?
I know in retreat obstacles are ignored but I'm not sure about this specific situation.
Did a little digging and found this!
Q. For Artillery in bunkers, flags are treated as a hit. Does Artillery in a bunker still ignore the first flag?
A. Yes. Basically an Artillery unit in a bunker may not retreat. Therefore it must lose one figure for each retreat flag that cannot be completed. But like all other units in a bunker hex, it may ignore the first flag rolled against it. In other words, it takes two flags to force it to retreat and take one hit, and three flags to make two hits.
@@WatchItPlayed I see. Thank you for answering so quickly on such an old video.
In fact, answering every question in the comments like this. Very respectable and rare sight.
