Cala Maria is a fun boss and is a nice break from some of the more ridiculous bosses on Isle 3. The RNG is a bit of a kick in the teeth when she turns you into stone, but it can be mitigated if you're well prepared. Overall, a good and easy boss in the grand scheme of things.

Hi, so this might be stupid but it really helped me when I was trying to S Rank Cala Maria (Actually just did it today it was annoying to say the least). There's actually a sound cue right before the laser beam that turns you to stone, a little high pitched shriek like a second before. So what I did was turn the music volume all the way down and the sound effects volume all the way up and when doing that part I'd make it a point to stay near her head. When you hear the little shriek go small and duck up into the corner right by her head where the laser beam doesn't hit. I don't know how it will work for other people but it was the only way I could do it. And if not at least you'll know when it's coming.

I found this accidentally but there is a small window where if you go small it nullifies the attack even if your in the middle of the screen but it’s pretty precise without knowing when she will do it. You can’t stay small because she will get you. You need to be in the transition frames from big to small to do it.

There’s an easier way you can go to the top of the screen and near her face not too close tho and then with this you wont be caught then use the bombs and boom
The last phase is the worst thing ever in this entire game. This is the last airplane fight I have to S rank and after everything I have finally come to that conclusion. It’s so awful.
Interesting! I find her to be much easier than Hilda Berg and Djimmi on Expert

I'll s rank most of the bosses, but so far I find maria to be the most infuriating
That first phase is the worst, that final phase is easy HELP ME JUSTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right here’s everything I know about S Ranking this fight.
1. My favourite charm to use for it is Divine Relic since it’s a plane fight and it gets Heart Ring + Coffee.
2. For those who hate getting petrified, I have a couple tips. Firstly, mash out using the left stick. Secondly, turn your music off but the sound effects up. Listen for a high pitch sound like a quieter version of the noise that plays when she turns her eyes green. The quieter one comes about a half second before the laser and alerts you to go in the blind spot just to the left of her snake hair (or you could go to the top right corner but that’s slower although generally safer). As for the last phase, learn the timing to smoke bomb through the green ghost face (using the divine relic).
3. Get as many parries as you can in the early phases, they’re risky to go for in the second to last phase and don’t exist in the last phase.
Learn the combinations of attacks she can have. When she does the pirates with the seahorse you want to bait him over to the right as she’s preparing to spit and then move back and down in a sort of circular motion to avoid the pirates. With the pufferfish and the ghosts, there’s always an empty spot you can pass through downwards to dodge the ghosts, if there isn’t you can parry a pufferfish to make one. With the fire fish, look for the parryable fireball. As for the electric eels, moving in a circular pattern as the mini plane works. Those are the main ones that can be difficult, all the others are pretty easy to learn yourself.
4. You can parry the corpse of the falling pufferfish in a very short time window.
casually dropping "You mash those buttons. You break the controller if you have to. It's worth it. I promise." lmao! 😂
These tutorials have been really helpful just to get through expert mode. I'm going for the A ranks trophies on PS4 and these tips have been great. I did this boss yesterday, and I found that the whetstone axe parry was really helpful in phase 1 for clearing out the pufferfish, especially when there's other attack combinations happening at the same time
Decided to pick the game back up and get the S ranks (Have 7 left to go). Currently doing this one, and while it's not the hardest, some of her combinations in the first phase are just messy as hell. The hardest combo for me is the seahorse and yellow fish. Second would probably be the pufferfish/red fish combo.
The good thing about this fight that I have trouble with in others is managing to get my 3 parries. She has plenty of opportunities unlike some bosses. I hate having to start a fight over simply because I couldn't get all my parries in.
I find the yellow fish with pufferfish, and the ghost with pufferfish the hardest

I've never played this game or even heard of it really, but it looks quite fun. very unique. good video, I'd like to see more, maybe potentially buy this game myself

This video was really helpful i was only 5 cards instead of the individual rockets so much that i totally forgot that i can use them the first try i used them i beat her on expert. Great video man.
I know im late for this game but you are helping me s rank every boss i got phantom express, king dice, and the devil himself but wow this boss was so hard because of rng that was a real pain.

Also little tip for every aerial boss, when you use your special nuke on them switch to bomber mode real quick and lay on two or three during a transition for extra damage

That one instance at 1:05, how in the name of the Devil did you NOT get hit there, even with the foreground blocking Cuphead?!
If you use smoke bomb while in a plane, you get a split second of invincibility while shrinking, it’s most likely that :/
Extra tip: If you are freezed by cala maria spin the joystick on your controller as fast as possible its better. and if youre on computer spam EVERY key (idk if that works bc i dont play on computahh)
she has a blind spot in her 3rd phase, the rng in that phase is completley negated! Stay right infront of the head, you dont get frozen, you dodge the skulls, and you can see the stone walls behind her and move accordingly!

i actually found out that if you use two buttons to mash, you brake out of the stone twice as fast

Tip: On Phase 2 Cala Maria makes a noise when she goes for the stone gaze!
Did you know using the move stick also counts as a way to free from stone.

My guy, u just saved my life, I’ve been trying to s-rank this horrible boss for 2 weeks, and didn’t had an idea that if you move the stick it counts as a way to get free, my a button is smashed. Thanks a lot man
I’m currently trying to S-rank her, Her 1st phase is super easy, but then the 2nd phase, it takes me longer to get out of the stone, any advice that can help me get out of the stone faster?

How did you get your supers that fast? You seem to be using Smoke Bomb as your Charm, but I can never get two supers in the first phase, and so I never seem to beat her fast enough.
Honestly just tons of parrying and focus firing. I got lucky this time because I normally don't get two supers in the first phase either.

Well, there's definitely some luck involved, so I minimized this issue by using an extra heart, she hit me once and that's alright, my time was even below 1:50 because the extra heart made me more confident and aggressive, I didn't even cared for those snakes (I don't know the name of those things, I'm not an English speaker native), I only cared to hit her, and I only used the strongest version of the super.
Netto JMS thank you for this comment and I used the heart charm and I actually killed cala Maria but instead I used the heart on the last phase instead of the phase with the snakes. Thank you so much, you are a good person!

i have 3 more s ranks, discluding the whole dlc... and this is definetly the hardest. i agree, the boss is easy but im just terrible with time. my best time was 2:24...
If you stay right next to the head in phase 3 you can’t get hit by any of her attacks

I find Cala to be the hardest boss on isle 3. The robot I beat easily every time. I hate this boss so much haha
the only part i still am stuck on is the seahorse and i can never stay close to it without it pushing me up and every time i do it the seahorse makes me take damage

Dude the last stage is Insanely rigged imo. I still can’t find a good way to beat her S tier. I beat S tier doctor kahl in 20 mins but I’ve been on this bitch for 3 hours but thank you for the help. Edit : I just finished the video, I haven’t been staying at the back for the third stage. That’s probably a key of winning
