I was forced recruited by my brother in 1982 - he asked me what are my plans after high school? I told him probably army since the marines may be too tough . He grabbed me by the throat and politely told me you are going to the marines . I was driven to MEPs and I remember to this date 41 years ago the marine on duty asked us “were you in any coerced or threatened into taking this oath ? I looked at my brother and deep inside me I said yeh get me out of here !! But nothing came out since my dear old brother was right next to me . As it turned out I shipped out 3 days after my high school graduation and I became a marine on October 18 1982. In 1992 I was a state police officer and was involved in an incident that left me dying on the side of the road . And that moment I remember my drill instructor telling me get the f up because you aren’t going to die until I give you permission. So now that I am 60 years old I can tell you My Marine Corps saved my life . Semper Fi and rest in peace my big brother Gunny N. Blanco plt 1004 1975. Buried Arlington. Meet me at the gates I’ll be wearing my blues .

PI? I was a Hollywood Marine.
I was San Diego Recruit Platoon 131 05/1963. Attended Radio Operator School at MCRD San Diego and got
MOS 2533 Radio/Telegraph Operator (Voice & Morse Code). Active duty was extended into inactive reserve years 68 & 69:
Nam needed ROs; was in country 04/67-11/68 - got shipped around to whoever needed an RO.
Did not do much trigger pulling because I needed to xmit and rcv information.
In Nam, I was all about sitreps, medevacs, resupply, air strikes, and air cover,
and getting choppers to an LZ to get us the hell outta' there!
    Semper Fi.
We ran EVERYWHERE in boot camp and did not dare get caught walking ANYWHERE !!
Could not blouse until after completing two weeks rifle range and qualified.
I look on it now and chuckle, laugh, but it was at times painful. And yes, it was worth it.
Best decision I ever made - DO NOT say that to your Lady!
    LOL
    Semper Fi

In 1971 San Diego, we started off living in Quonset huts, dark, dingy, stale air tin cans. After a few weeks you went to the modern buildings called hotels. I'm so glad I didn't go to Parris Island after comparing with fellow Marines. But then we had Camp Pendelton to deal with, which is just a little North of Hell.

I was at mcrd san diego in nov 2001. The walk, don't run mantra was still used then at pickup. Never said again after that. The canteen move was still used occasionally training. First night/morning we were there everyone had to down one and hold it over your head upside down. The next day they added the rule we are going to keep drinking until someone throws up. Luckily it was only 2 before someone did 😂

The canteen thing started coming to an end in the late 90’s. The military stopped giving salt tablets in the late 80’s early 90’s. After that, a few cadets and recruits died from hyponatremia, low salt in blood. It can be deadly, especially if the troop isn’t eating full meals.

Lmao it’s funny how it’s still like that, I was at San Diego 2 years ago and you could always tell the DI change up a little when the officers or other higher ups were around and they start enforcing things they “supposed to do” but never actually do. Thought it was kinda funny at times because they’re supposed to not swear because of “professionalism” so when the shiny comes around lots of “f*cks” turned into “fricks”😂

I do remember we had to chug water. First time I ever saw anyone throw up water. One thing I saw different from my time we would hold up our money valuable bag (ours was blue) and we had to count off. I saw in that clip the DI was counting. One more thing, there was always a sense of urgency. You would never hear a DI say walk don't run. That sounds strange to me. I'm guessing a recruit or several over the years might have busted their grape while running in the squad bay maybe.

I went to bootcamp in 2008 and Black Friday seemed a lot more intense than that. Like chaotic af. The canteen chug thing, they used to do something called water IT. Basically you'd chug multiple canteens over and over again. They'd usually do it after chow. They stopped doing that in about 2009 I think. Some recruit that was a guide had his stomach rupture and it required multiple surgeries to fix, do they stopped it

When that kid was put in a dryer by his DI, and then he died. They put very strict rules down. It's very easy to get kicked off the drill field and charged under the UCMJ now. I worked with a guy who lost SSgt, spent time in the brig, denied reenlistment, and was given a negative separation. It was from him grabbing a recruit by their collar when he was a DI.

When I was in boot camp in 2001 after the preparatory command they’d say “Ready Move”. Then the recruits would reply “Kill!” Or “Kill Kill Kill them all!” Or on line counts you’d hold your arm out in front and count off vs the DI running.

@@jacobenglish5940 Thanks for the info. Although, I’m genuinely a polytheistic pagan and want to bring the poetic edda or prose edda. I know the Army recognizes Norse Paganism/ heathenry/ asatruism, but I feel like the MC DIs will hear me say it’s religious literature, laugh, then chuck it to the garbage. Dog tags are enough of an amulet for the 3 months, so I’m obviously not bringing one of those until after. Will never care about beards either.

Not gonna lie.. this shit looks weak as fuck. I didn't sleep for 3 days in the fucking RECEIVING platoon to bootcamp. The receiving crew legit tried to get as many of us to drop the fuck out just due to sleep deprivation. But, that's a wartime Marine Corps, vs the peace time now. Hope we don't forget the hard fought lessons.. because we want to be.. "inclusive.. and understanding.. and woke". The Marine Corps if for winning battles. Not fighting wars, or winning hearts and minds.. or any of that other bullshit. We are the shock troops of the US. I fear that we are losing touch with that foundation.
