I was ready to dismiss Abramelin as an amalgam of wishful thinking, but this insight into its origins is terrific. Your scholarship and sleuthing has vindicated its longevity. Thank you, Dr Sledge.
It's really never for me to reject a text or anything's spiritual importance - I just want to provide the best and most honest analysis I can and be honest as I learn more and think more deeply about these topics.
Am I the only one that looks at Abramelin and sees Aba Merlin which is evocative of the term abba Merlin or father Merlin? Just a thought but I would be curious if anyone has a take on this.
I love that your willing to take a step back from a previous position on a subject, and allow for thought of the latter. More scholars do, indeed, need to be just as flexible in their stance of texts like these!
I kinda "feel" like the people writing books with symbols change a little bit of the symbol or change a letter of a word on a talisman just to keep the knowledge actually hidden. Its kinda like telling the world "hey we are aware of magic and powers givin by the divine and hears how to do it!" But then everyone does it and says and is underwhelmed by their experience. But people with knowledge of the language used and a background in that religion may draw an idea to change the word to something they would understand and use. Making the ritual more intrinsic and personal to the person performing it. In effect creating a connection and helping "feel" the desired effect even if it is more internal than external.
This video is exactly why I'm pleased to support this channel on Patreon. Thank you for your personal authenticity, and also that more detailed exploration. Many occultists won't know those kinds of details about Jewish history and language, and those details are obviously extremely important. Thank you for for highlighting without oversimplifying. I look forward to a time when the hebrew manuscript is the center of academic focus.
Thanks so much for supporting the channel - and for my random thoughts on obscure stuff :) You now I don't soapbox often but I do find it shocking as to the amount of disgusting anti-semitism I see in the 'occult' world combined with a shocking lack of knowledge of even basic understanding of Judaism or even the Hebrew language (much less historical Kabbalah) considering how much that tradition basically underwrites so much of 'esotericism' or 'occultism.' There is a combination of ignorance and arrogance that would be amazing if it weren't so, so sad. At any rate /soapbox - I'm just doing my best to present the best information I can and be humble enough to nuance and change my positions as I learn more. I think that's the least we should expect from public educators and intellectuals.
I went flipping through the book the other night (I've never read more than a few pages here and there). One thing I noticed were some passages where intense emphasis was put on the number 72. I think I saw something about Qabala in the detailed table-of-contents, and found the repeated references to 72 in that section. That could suggest the author had a slight familiarity with certain key qabalistic concepts - OR it could mean the entire book is a gateway, or something pointing into something quite different than what the surface of the text, or its historic appearance suggests. And yes! I'm quite sure a book of this type, that has had such a profound influence through the occult history of the west, deserves some fresh scholastic consideration. (PS - my like-click was #665. dang-it! one off....)

I would love to hear Dr.'s opinion on the research of Douglas Vogt on the Hebrew alphabet! I imagine his discovery is also what Stan Tennen (?) from the Maru Foundation discovered regarding this literary magical language.
In your previous video (I think) you said the squares are customized for each magician. Maybe the Sephardic Rabbi was a user and transmitter of the text written by Abraham who included hiw own unique squares with the book when he published it.
I don't think I said that but what you suggest is possible - the text obviously ended up in Germany, in what seems to be early on in its recension history. Maybe even produced in Germany by a Sephardi Jew, the squares at least. I don't recall any of the squares displaying non-Sephardi Hebrew. I just wonder if we aren't dealing with a few different texts, with different recensions, etc., edited together as we now know them.
I agree! Sooo much from our history has been altered, changed, added, not considered fairly ir discrete altogether??? No one perfect, let's get another opinion from more experts to discern our truth from their opinions or with diagnostic and scientific evidence available now... please. @@TheEsotericaChannel we need new eyes on everything in my opinion. Its part of the reason God put me here as a Mystic...we need the REAL TRUTH, DONT YOU THINK?
At this point, I think there is compelling evidence that the creator of the squares was a Sephardi, learned Jew with some experience with alchemy. I think that the Hebrew manuscript of the text was written or translated by a learned Jew and isn't merely a translation. I am not convinced that the text as we have it was originally one text by a single author.
