I've done a little sewing and quilting over the last 3 years. What scraps I have are what my late mother saved. She made beautiful scrap quilts. I'm thinking that I'd like to make one in memory of her.

I think that would be a lovely idea. Decide what style or block you might like to make and then cut your pieces accordingly. There are some great scrap blocks or perhaps a scrappy sampler. I have a selection of go-to scrap blocks if we need more comfort quilts in a hurry for a project we support. Happy quilting.

I have a large trash can beside my cutting table. I make a pillow case the fits into the can and throw scraps into the pillow case lined trash can. When it is about 3/4 full, I pull out the pillow case out and triple sew the case closed. When I get several pillows I that them to the local animal shelter. I make sure there is nothing but fabric and batting scraps in the cases. These make washable pet beds for the shelter animals.😊

Today I processed about 2/3 of a large ziplock bag of scraps, sorting by color and size, and will follow some of Karen’s videos for turning them into scrap strips, bonus blocks, and so on.
And then I found some scrap oak handrail and a scrap of fine grit sandpaper, and made myself a tailor’s clapper. And holy cow, IT WORKS!
    Happy scrappy day, everyone!

I’ve spent ~5 weeks clearing out scraps. I LOVE scraps but my space was completely overwhelmed with them. I’ve sold bundles of them through my guild and have made some cash from it. (Before I did this I donated to our Community quilt group - another worthwhile way to rid yourself of them). Cleared out Batiks and Christmas fabrics. My room is cleaner and my pocket a bit fuller! I’m trying to reframe from buying any fabric until I’ve made a honest big dent into what I already have. Thanks Karen for sharing all your helpful tips. 👍❤️😊

I had an incredible Mt. Scrapmore!
I realized that already months ago 🫣
My solution is just in the making : I am working at a king size Quilt with scraps of different sizes, already sewn into pieces of 10x30cm.
I am almost finished with the top and already accumulate material for the back.
Looking at the first real "made only from scraps quilt top" makes me very proud and full of joy!
Since my Mt Scrapmore is always growing I think I will just keep going on with preparing and collecting the pieces into different sizes to make the next quilt.

I set aside one day a month for a scrappy day. I go through my scraps and pair them up with a pattern. Then I pull out the color and sizes that I need for the quilt. Then I put them in a bin and mark on the bin the day for the pieces and use them as leaders and enders.

I am currently shrinking my Mt. Scrapmore! I was given lots of bags of scraps twice last year! Love scrap quilts! I've been sorting them into categories and have plans for lots of different themed lap quilts! It tickles me to see a fabric I might have had or one in a different colour run! I know all my fabric!😂 I have them in bins and sorted into themes. Dogs and cats, farm life, beachy, cowboy, transportation etc. At the moment, I'm working on string type lap quilts with only light and medium floral. What I toss out, pieces less than 2" square, goes in a bag to a lady making pet beds for the shelter. My ladies group meets once a month at the library and some bring in fabric and we help ourselves! They are donations left at the church. So I have nothing to actually toss out!☺I am lucky to have a bedroom designated as my Happy Place!😍 Thanks for all your helpful hints!

The Accuquilt Go Big! has conquered my scrap issues. After two projects all the scraps go through the machine with whatever pattern works best. That block goes into a bin and when I have enough they get sewn into a charity quilt. What scraps are left are cut into 1.5 inch strips for Log Cabin blocks that will also become a charity quilt.

I do not have a mount scrapmore. I keep a shopping bag behind my cutting counter and as I have leftover cuts, I throw them in the bag. Once the bag is full, I give it to a friend who makes charity quilts. I put crumb sized pieces in a bag that goes to a cotton recycling center. I have too much fabric to use to worry about the pitsy pieces.

I have kept strips in my antique sewing drawers so I do have some, but think about if you want to make scrap quilts, just like Karen suggested. Maybe you really don't. Let it go!!! Love this series every year, Karen. thank you

I don’t have a lot of fabric I consider scraps. I am early in my quilting journey so most of my scraps are larger pieces of fabric left from other crafts and I tend to reuse them for various crafts. After I finish a project I usually put the leftover fabrics folded neatly in a “right size” ziploc bag so that any leftovers are stored by project.
I’m thinking that becoming a more dedicated quilter will mean I will need to come up with a better way of dealing with quilting scraps. Thanks Karen and everyone for your comments - I am filing these away in my memory for future planning.

My definition of 'scraps' is different than most and I have a hard time letting go of material that I feel is useful that others throw away. Sooo, I have crumbs, strings, strips and squares. I also have sew & flips that I have turned into HSTs. Some of the ladies I sew with toss anything smaller than a FQ!
I agree that it becomes easier to purge once you discover what type of quilt making you want to do. Scraps are great but they do take longer to process because it takes time to create the pieces you want/need.

My scraps are all pressed and sorted by color then by size one color per drawer. I used your idea of trays inside the drawer to separate crumbs from other size chunks so if I’m looking for a crumb it’s on top, larger chunks on the bottom of the drawer under the tray. But, do I use them??? I don’t. I like scrap quilts but don’t make them often as I’ve spent the past few years working on ufo and wips and creating scraps instead of using them. I’m going to give myself one more year to start using them ( I have a couple of projects in mind) or out they go. I’m going to rewatch your scrap videos and then dedicate some sewing time each week to sew with these precious pieces and see what happens. Perhaps, as you did Karen, this year will be the year of the scrap.

Was wondering how full you stuff them? I have read that dog beds aren’t acceptable as the dogs tend to chew them and thus the stuffing can come out. Do you do anything to help prevent this happening?

As a garment sewist what I count as useable scraps are a lot bigger pieces than for quilting, so they go back into fabric storage. But then there’s all the leftover pieces from cutting out that can’t be used for anything… honestly I’m throwing a lot of it away. But there’s a fun project one can collect scraps for: scrap sitting pouf. The scraps can not only be used for the shell of the pouf, but all the small, weirdly shaped or strange materials pieces (hello bra lace, looking at you…) can be used for filling 😁
Maybe not so good for quilting scraps that someone else can use, but for garment fabrics it’s a great solution that keeps the fabric out of the landfill.

I have just spent a large part of the last 4 days sorting out my scraps. I don’t do large quilts anymore, but spend my time doing small projects. I have sorted most of my scraps into widths and bagged them up. Another bag of odd sizes and put anything less than an inch into another bag to go out for textile recycling. It’s very satisfying. Now I am making drawstring bags for a charity - The Gambian Schools Trust - where they will be used for counters and puzzles in the schools they support. My scraps will be used eventually.
I’m in the UK where fabric is very expensive, but with plenty of new yardage, I have made a resolution to use them to make small items to give away in the future.
Thanks Karen for the videos, I enjoy watching them. Sheila

I don't precut my scraps because I don't know what size pieces I'll need. I now have 2 year-long scrappy projects in the works. One is a FPP, which uses many different shapes and sizes of fabric. For the other-- I'm making 120 house blocks. Every 2-3 days I make 2 house blocks. Going through my scraps and pulling out fabric and cutting the shapes is so satisfying! I prepare the pieces one day and sew them the next. It's a great warm-up to a day of sewing, or a pleasant quick project for days when time is short.

Scraps - I love scraps but a few years ago I had to stop saving everything. I still probably have more scraps than I can use in a lifetime here is the process I now use that has worked very well. I have a medium size basket all the scraps I will save go into. Small bits and pieces I don’t save they go into a pillowcase and when it’s full gets sewn together for a dog (or cat) bed that goes to a friend or charity. I can usually get a few done a year. When my bin gets full I cut to the sizes I use mostly 10”, 5”, 2 1/2” and other size strips for string blocks. The scrappy blocks I make are 10” and I use them in many ways but some are potholder, some are bowl cozies and I do a lot of embroidery so I use them as backing. Also can use in an after quilt. My favorite books on scrap busting are the ones from Joan Ford and I have made many of her patterns in her books. This year bought “Quilt Builder Card Deck” (from Amazon) and my goal this year is to make 10” blocks using my scraps cause I am getting tired of string blocks. Hope this gives you some ideas on what to do with your scraps. I store all these 10” blocks in an Art Bin and when it’s full it’s time to get busy.

Hello Karen, you hit the nail right on the head! I am sick of looking at these scraps of fabric. I have made many quilts using this fabric and I am sick of seeing it or using it again. Mine is going to my guild. Thank you so so much for the encouragement you give us to help improve our sewing spaces.

I know the answer to the question, Karen! Pick me! Pick me! Wait, I think that was a bag of scraps calling me. This past fall I've been doing the big tackle of scraps. Yesterday I finished a 39.5 x 53 inch potato chip block quilt from my scraps. Did it make a dent in my Mt. Scrapmore? A little. I put narrow borders on and for the first time in a while, I made the borders out of fabric I've had for a couple of years but hadn't used yet. That felt good. I like doing string quilts and my supply was running low.
    Golly gee whiz.

I sort my scraps into two categories - solids and patterns. Then, depending on the size of the original scrap, I cut either 3.5”, 4” or 5” squares, and 2.5” and 1.5” strips and store them in clear ziplock bags. Any odd shaped scraps are trimmed and saved to use as log cabin centre blocks. This method is working well for me so far.😊 I am really enjoying sorting out my sewing room by following your daily projects Karen. I have aldo moved some furniture around to give me more space to work. xx

I really love scrappy quilts, and I have been making an effort of using the fabric I have, including my scraps, whenever I can, rather than buying new. I am not a big crumb quilter though. It's too fiddly for me. My dad had offered me an old bag of his worn out jeans and these sturdy canvas shirts he wears, which I am now turning into poufs for my kids' playroom and stuffing with batting scraps and fabric crumbs. I love that this is a zero-waste project, and that these poufs will serve a purpose for my kids and will always remind me of my dad.

Well, I didn't actually get rid of any scraps yesterday, but I did organize them. Now instead of the larger pieces being shoved haphazardly into the medium tub, they are sorted by color in ziplocs & laid neatly in the container. Scraps that have been trimmed to smaller sizes were already organized this way in separate, smaller tubs (one for squares & orphan blocks, one for strips). I'm not 100% convinced this is the optimum arrangement - it annoys me that one fabric might be in multiple locations depending on the sizes - however it will do for now. Thank you for the incentive!

Already this year, I made a scrappy HST quilt using my abundance of 2 1\2" squares. I did reduce my stash, (got the scrap stream flowing) but I realized that the smaller the scrap, the longer it takes to make a project. This project used over 1000 HSTs. I am so sick of them right now! I love using up scraps, but I also want to have TIME to devote to other projects.

I'm an occasional lurker. I must say that you've inspired me to discard about 15 Simplicity sewing patterns, because I rarely get good results. I think, being European, Burda patterns are closer to my measurements, and I will devote more time to pattern making from scratch based on my own measurements. And I am kicking out fabric scraps that I really don't want to have in my stash any more.

My scraps are in clear boxes with lids. I sort into strips and squares. I have to regularly go through my scrap pile and cut into designated sizes. I will usually neaten the pile and lay them out and press if they're wrinkled and then I do my cutting. This is often more of a mental exercise, because I usually have things to do but that pile is annoying me and in the way. So I just tell myself that my task for the day is to deal with the scraps. Usually by the time I'm finished I feel energized and I go on to sewing for a while.

I only have a small room, so my scraps are in the top of my raskog trolley in clear bags organised by colour. I make FPP quilts so the tiny pieces are still useful. I am making an alphabet quilt for my nephew, so using scraps before I dip into stash.

I have a large tub/crate with smallish pieces of material that I use when I am appliquéing. I have cut larger pieces into 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10" squares but haven't done that in years. I have my fabric sorted into colours. Maybe I will go through a box a day and see if I can tidy it by cutting squares, but don't go smaller than 5".

I have it down to 1 big tub and a box. From that I’ve held out all the batiks, when I’m done making 2 quilts from them I’ll be out of batik scraps. That’s not to say I won’t build my stock again. I really love batik fabric. Then I still have one big plastic tub of prints. All the moving boxes are out of the hallway, and furniture and plastic tubs and boxes are where I think I want it. Now to figure out how I will get the plastic boxes off the shelves when it’s the bottom of a stack of 3? I’ve stacked medium boxes on top of each other in the closet, with the names of the craft on the outside.

I don't have a Mt Scrapmore, but a small hill. I have Kaye England's 76 Clambones pattern that I want to do this year. It needs 76 fabrics of about 12" square (?) for each faux clamshell. The fabric is in strips so I don't need whole 12" squares. I need to kit it up with 76 fabrics, sub cut, so maybe I'll get that done this year.

I make quilts from my scraps. I never intended that the majority of my quilts would be scrap quilts but hey-they are mostly free right? I have a psper bag of scras that are sorted by color. Every week I tackle one color family and make 9 patch blocks. I just made a rainbow colored irish chain quilt that I love.

I have a lot of scraps that i have taken in. Im a new quilter and new fabric isnt always in the budget, plus my mom is an established quilter and longarmer, so i also get batting scraps. Thanks to Karens tips ive been starting to put methods into place for processing all of these. I am pretty much going with QAYG, and i figured out a use for 2 1/2 in batting strips. Recipt roll with crumbs, then stitch into jellyroll rugs. I also have batting cut for mug rugs, bowl cozies, and double oven mitts.

Mt Scrapmore 😂, my mountain of scraps are fairly organized. I cut leftovers down to fat quarters, 10 inch squares, 5 inch squares, 2 1/2 inch strips and squares, and 2 inch squares. I’m still holding on and hoping to use most of it eventually. I’ve spent days cutting scraps into these, dare I say, usable sizes.

Look at Pam Buda's Circa 1880s quilt pattern. It can use up your dark colors. I've been drawn to primitive style prints and colors for years and now I have the perfect way to use them.

Your color wheel can help you find a contrast for your prominent dark color. Sometimes, a couple of fat quarters or a 1/4 yard in a contrasting color that is a tint, can add just what you need.

  • @megharmon2298

Most of what I have is scraps!! Either left from projects or donated to me. My drawers are very full now. I have vowed not to take any more from others and just keep working with what I have. I am making progress. Most of the quilts I make, I can make from what I have and some of those scraps are big enough to be a focus fabric. Because most of the larger scraps are organized by color and that works for me, I will leave that alone. There are 2 drawers of very small scraps for crumb quilting that I need to start using up better. I do have a leader ender project that just works when I am making other blocks. But I need to keep doing either the leader ender or the crumb blocks. I just forget to keep it going as I work on my main project. I will try to get those things going again.
