  • I reread another favorite book of all time! This time in the English translation in the Penguin modern classics edition which I can now assure you is fantastic. On Heroes and Tombs is dark psychological fiction with a noir atmosphere in which the author wears his mind on his sleeve, and invites you to seek the light at the end of The Tunnel (pun intended!) alongside young Martín and his older mentor Bruno. One could even find a heroic arc in the tormented Alejandra, as all of them are threatened by a kind of demonic magnetic energy surrounding the psychopathic Fernando. And what does this all have to do with 1950's Argentina? Probably something!
This is a book/author that I would reccommend to fans of the video game Disco Elysium!
Also check out this video on Sabato's first short novella, The Tunnel, by Jorge's Corner.

One of my favourite books of the 20th century right with Hunger by Knut Hamsun and Demian by Hesse.
The whole “Trilogy” by Sabato is great !

Hi mike! Jorge recommended me to check your videos. And jorge never disappointed me. Your sabato's review is amazing. I have immediately subscribed to your channel. Thank you very much. I've read the tunnel both in spanish and english. Now it's time to give on heroes and tombs a try.

Fascinating discussion, Mike, as always! 😃 You speak for so many of us when you describe your experience reading this brilliant author. There may not be such a thing as "The Great Argentine Novel," but if we had to choose one just for the sake of argument, Sobre héroes y tumbas would not be a bad choice. Gracias totales por recomendar mi video. ¡Muchos saludos, amigo!

Thanks Jorge! This reread reminded me what a remarkable author he truly was. Whether it's the great Argentine novel or not, I believe in the capacity of his writing to help people cope in this ever more confusing and maddening age of technological "advancement." I find his writing as fresh and relevant as if it were written yesterday, there is something "timeless" about it...Saludos!

Thank you for such insightful review. Coincidentally I am reading Sabato's essay "La Resistencia" which reflects on the advances of society (the good and the bad) and what we can learn from them for a better future. I do have my copy of Sobre héroes y tumbas and I read the note at the beginning with you so it was fun. Once I am done with the essay I am looking forward to starting this novel. On another hand, I followed the same strategy with One hundred years of solitude by reading it both in Spanish and English to have a contrasting 3D skeleton of the novel and ever since I try to do with every novel the same strategy.

Thank you for watching and sharing! I haven't read "La Resistencia" yet, but I am curious to learn how Sabato writes in an essay versus in fiction. I think that if you enjoyed that essay and know his thoughts on those themes, you will get so much out of his novels. Many of the books in this project that I've read in Spanish, I've attempted to at the very least find audiobooks in English that I can listen to while doing other things to get a comparison, so I agree completely bilingual reading is a great approach. I'd love to hear your thoughts on Sobre héroes y tumbas when you get to it! Much of the book is still mysterious and fascinating to me.

@@mikereadstheworldOn a side note, you can visit Sabato's house in Santos Lugares (its like an hour in taxi from Buenos Aires) o by train and his granddaughter gives a group tour of his home / studio which is still in its original setting. That place is so peaceful and magical and you can kinda understand Sabato's creative process and his essays or his take on themes like religion, modern society, science, arts etc. His studio also has numerous paintings that he did and as per my knowledge they are only on display n his studio in Santos Lugares.

Also, regarding your observation on One hundred years of Solitude, I found it fascinating because I felt the same way when I read Elena Garro's Los recuerdos del porvenir (Published much before cien años) and it has all the themes. I love Garcia Marquez and Cien años specially, but i really do think he took a lot of "inspirations" from others. Elena Garro (Octavio Paz's wife) never got enough credit for her literary work due to Paz's machismo which was then later revealed by their daughter Helena Paz Garro. Sorry if my comments are getting rant-y. Its just that i am commenting in real-time as your video progresses :D ... I am super intrigued to start reading Sobre héroes y tumbas.

@bilalakhtar14 You are now the second person to recommend Elena Garro to me within 2 weeks! She will definitely be my choice as a part 2 for Mexico, very intrigued to read her! Thanks for that and the info on Sabato's house. I hope to get to Buenos Aires one day.

@@mikereadstheworld Elena Garro is difficult to find in Lima. Buscalibre page works best for these types of books. So far i have bought 5 copies of Los recuerdos del porvenir to give as gifts to my fellow reader friends and it has not disappointed anyone so far.
