  • Bee Gees legend Barry Gibb joins Tim Roxborogh to talk about the 40th anniversary of one of the great forgotten albums of his catalogue, 1981's Living Eyes. Hear why it wasn't just the anti-disco backlash against the group that caused the album to stall, plus what Barry thinks of songs like Don't Fall In Love With Me.

Living Eyes is my very favorite Bee Gees' album. It just breaks my heart that such a masterpiece, such a mountain peak of the brothers' soaring songwriting and musical abilities as Living Eyes was and is didn't receive the recognition and admiration it deserved. I greatly appreciate Barry's explanation of the behind-the-scenes litigation and unrest that was going on at the time of the release of Living Eyes. I wonder if had the brothers had Robert Stigwood and his team in their corner as they had before making Living Eyes would he have been able to promote it as the shining star it was and is... We'll never know. To me it's their most sophisticated album, and perhaps it requires a more refined and mature ear to fully appreciate. I would truly rank it as one of their all-time most beautiful, elegant, soul touching albums, and that's saying a whole lot.

That's very true. I think true listeners will understand it.
To me the music of this album has so much power spiritually, and I appreciate it very much because it gives me God's Strength in my lower times. It gives me visions of the Lord Almighty and His glory, reminding me of His Love, Power and Promise.
So much love, goodness, meaning and power in it. Uplifts my spirit. Just like all their music, it always keeps on the sunny side of life!!!!!!!
I couldn't be more thankful for them keeping on doing their music. so that we all can continue to enjoy and appreciate. I especially respect Barry for doing his (sublime!) work now, a sure evidence that their music will live always and forever!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊

The “Living Eyes” LP was breath of fresh air for me when it came out. I had a love/not so much love relationship with the falsettos. However, in hindsight I have come to absolutely love and adore “Too Much Heaven.” I think there may have been overlap between the recording of “Living Eyes” and the work on “Guilty.” I hear similarities between “Cryin’ Every Day” and “Never Give Up.”
The Bee Gees were the scapegoats and cover for the disco backlash. The backlash was more than about a difference of music taste. It was a backlash against minorities influence in music and culture. The Bee Gees were the cover that the haters could point to when they were called on their racism and homophobia.
Regardless of all that this album has always had a special place in my heart. 😊

Oh yeah, the 'Living Eyes' album. I own every LP/CD/DVD/Demotakes/Bootlegs of the bros. Gibb, so I'm what's called a die hard fan. Particulary on that one, all songs are masterpieces, but one of them is absolutely on top, just like another level, noone reached before and after. It's definately 'Be Who You Are'. Why? It combines rich classical elements with a popballad, beautiful sang by Barry with both of his vocalabilities, strong natural chestvoice and an emotional falsetto. And then the lyrics, making a statement with messages for all human beings. There should be a venue, where Barry and his band, together with for excample the New York Philharmonics, are doin' one thing: Just playing that song live to the world! BTW, showing his real face, just like he did at Glastonbury. Not like Abba(tors). What they will do, to me is simply disgusting.

An EXTREMELY VERY, VERY RARE talk with Barry Gibb opening up and discussing that very contentious period during the "Living Eyes" era. Indeed, like many here on this thread, how trite it may sound, the "LIVING EYES" album is and forever will be, my favorite Brothers Gibb recording...off all time; of all time.

A "What If" of the Living Eyes period was that, fresh from the success of having 6 No.1 hits in succession, I thought that momentum would've continued on if they released a "neutral" album, away from the Disco backlash.
In particular, I was thinking of a Christmas album with a mixed originals & traditionals in there. I really could bet there would be at least 1-3 hits from it which we will enjoy on a yearly basis.
