The problem I have with this infotainment system is the industry wide push toward "connected services" and subscription requirements. This is absurd and it really makes me angry to have to pay a monthly fee for very basic features, especially considering how much this truck costs to purchase. I definitely will not pay for this when I get a Tundra in a year or so. The other perhaps even bigger problem with this system is that fact that your every move and user data can be tracked by Toyota and sold to their affiliates. Let's be honest, this is the primary reason that most manufacturers are going to these kinds of networks infotainment systems. It's all about building a user profile that they can use to generate a never ending revenue stream. It would be fine if they gave you a choice to completely opt out, but it is forced on you if you want to utilize the full functionality of the system and that will never be acceptable to me. I simply want a fully functional infotainment system that doesn't require me to have a profile with Toyota and can be fully utilized without the data mining.

Most connected services require a mobile/cellular data connection, so free for life is not going to happen from anyone.
I do agree the keyfob function that is a direct rf connection should be left enabled and not tied to a subscription.
I wish manufacturers would offer a lower cost connected service that would use the drivers phone data plan or use home wifi for software updates. This would only facilitate some services but likely the most useful, like navigation, service/diagnostic monitoring, location tracking etc. Missing or limited would be long distance remote start and lock control, and security functions (tracking, video, engine disable).
Not too concerned myself about remote start, since starting and idling an engine for any length of time has always been a bad practice. Turning on heated seats is all I would like here for Michigan winters or opening windows during summer heat.

Disclaimer: This is not a justification, it is an explanation of why companies in all industries will move towards subscriptions. Subscriptions are currently the best/fastest way for companies to increase their stock price or valuations. Subscription revenue is valued at many times their face value, 7x or more in some cases. For example (using very simplified math), signing a customer up for a $7/month subscription is worth more to a company's investors then a one-time purchase of $500 ($7 * 12 months *7x valuation multiple for subscription revenue = $588.)
Automotive companies (and companies in every industry) across the board are adopting this model. They will move more and more functionality to tiered subscriptions. At some point it will be the norm for people to pay between $15 and $50+ a month for car subscriptions. You will also see more and more of Volvo style "whole car" subscription services for this same reason.
Here is one more illustration of this - Ford sells 1 million F150's every year in the US. Let's say half of those owners signed up for a $15/month subscription. This would increases Ford's revenue (for the purposes of valuation) by $630 million. Yes, that's more than half a billion dollars, for just the F150. Whoever your favorite car brand is, they will do this. They will have no choice.

Hi everyone - thank you always for your comments and feedback. I just wanted to say that I created this video simply because so many of you asked for my opinion in regard to these 3 issues that have surfaced. My intention was not to judge anyone or to critique anyone but to simply provide my perspective on these issues and to talk about potential solutions or work-arounds in dealing with them. If the video appeared to be a bit harsh or seem a bit strong, my apologies - it was never intended to be a controversial video in any way. All media and youtubers play an important role to communicate information and insight so I appreciate what others have been doing in terms of the Tundra ownership experience - every youtuber is entitled to their own perspectives and opinions. I truly appreciate everyone's comments and also appreciate other youtubers and Tundra owners who are providing valuable insight into the ownership experience of the new Tundra. While watching the Car Care Nut's channel, I became aware that "Toyota Remote Connect" uses a cellular network in order to work.
If Toyota uses "Toyota Remote Connect" in order to activate the remote start feature, then we cannot get it for free. We will essentially be demanding that Toyota allow us to use a cellular carrier's network at no cost. And I am pretty sure that no carrier will allow anyone to use their network at no cost.
If remote start uses the proximity feature of the fob and not "Toyota Remote Connect", then I agree fully that it should be free.
      What do you think?

Hi David, I’ve been an avid supporter of your channel and love and appreciate the wealth of knowledge you’re bringing to the market and your subscribers. However, I must disagree with you on a couple of things:
    1. Door latch issue. You cannot detach Toyotas responsibility by blaming a supplier. Toyota gets all the credit or all the blame for a product with their name on it. While I am confident it won’t be an issue long and that Toyota will correct it quickly, it IS their fault.
    2. Infotainment system. The system shouldn’t be such that it requires interaction from guests getting in to just drive. If it doesn’t detect a programmed profile, then it should default to guest with zero interaction required. Saying it’s user error may be true - but it shouldn’t be possible for someone who does this for a living to have user error. Your experiences as an engineer I believe are valuable but they also color your perspective a bit far in this instance. I shouldn’t HAVE to read the manual/follow instructions to program/get started. It ought to be [more] intuitive.
    3. Key fob issue. As I understand it, the manual doesn’t contain instructions for using the key fob to remote start - making it a “hidden” or “secret” feature. It shouldn’t be necessary to do a Google search for such a commonly sought after functionality. To me it looks like Toyota (aptly) wants folks to think the only way to do it is through the (paid subscription) app after the free trial. That’s suspect in my mind and makes me distrust them. What other features are going to suddenly quit working after 737 days? At 5 years I have to start paying per use for CRAWL control? Perhaps after 7 years I can’t go over 75 MPH or can only accelerate 0-60 in 6.5s if I pay $10/mo? Not well thought out from my perspective. If that is the mindset I will seriously rethink my purchase decision. Forcing me to pay a subscription or lose a function of MY key fob is ridiculous and will be a DEAL KILLER for me.
I have owned Toyotas for some time now and am looking at the TRD Pro for what will likely be a small mortgage of a car payment. The infotainment issue is easy - don’t default to forcing people to select a profile. Let the car know I’m there by my phone being in the car. The door lock issue - fix it and own responsibility for lack of QA. The key fob. Don’t disable functionality on it EVER or I will NOT buy your $80,000 truck and you may lose my business indefinitely.

Thank you for your comments - and your feedback is truly appreciated. Let me add some additional clarification:
      1) Yes I agree that Toyota should be held accountable for ALL parts regardless of who makes it - I was simply saying that the root cause of the problem is likely a manufacturing defect at a supplier. I've designed and manufactured automotive components on both sides of the fence (supplier/OEM) so I do understand the complexity of the situation and wasn't trying to get the supplier to take all of the responsibility.
      2) I will have to reserve my judgement on the infotainment until I get my own Tundra to test out - but the whole point is that anyone is able to drive the Tundra without having to log-in or sign-in for the user profile. The truck is definitely driveable and you are able to use almost all of the functions in the infotainment system even if you don't create a user profile.
      3) I think the key fob situation is a legacy capability that Toyota likely does not want to highlight (to convince users to work with the app instead) but most of us who've owned Toyota's before have known about this for a long time, so I really don't think it's "hidden" or "secret". But anyways, turning off the remote start capability after the trial is definitely not customer-oriented.
Many thanks for your comments - I really appreciate everyone chiming in for this video

For people who wonder why the *engine shuts off* when the door is open following the remote start, here is a quick explanation. I used to develop control systems software for a major automaker. However, we certainly did not disable the engine following remote start. Anyway, there are 2 issues: (1) liability, (2) safety.
    (1) *liability* - there are edge cases where the person who has remotely started the car (presumably the owner) is actually not the person who jumps into the vehicle and drives off (potentially a thief). Yes, the immobilizer logic could possibly turn off the car immediately when it doesn't detect the proximity of the key, but it gets very tricky. E.g. the owner could be in proximity, yet somebody else could still jump in and potentially steal the vehicle. Sure it's rare, but if you sell 100s of thousands of vehicles, then it's bound to happen to somebody, somewhere....
    (2) *safety* - immobilizer must never disable the engine when the vehicle is already in motion (when vehicle speed is non-zero). That is a safety-critical ... so the thief might simply run. If you want to test this logic, if you feel really adventurous, you could try this. Start normally, go for a drive, open the window while the vehicle is in motion, throw the key fob out the window (e.g to an assistant on a side of the road). As you continue driving, the car might scream, flash the instrument cluster lights, and beep like crazy, but it will not shut down the engine in this scenario.
Anyway, there are ways of strategizing the software logic to solve both issues above without pissing off the customers, but Toyota chose the most conservative and the safest solution.
Unfortunately, a very annoying solution to most users.

@@PHILLIPS8822 - some do, some don’t. My 2017 Honda Ridgeline doesn’t shut off when I unlock or open the door. It’s safety control is that it can’t be put in gear and driven until someone applies pressure to the brake pedal and pushes the Start/Stop button while the key fob is within the required detection range. Other people have posted under other 2022 Tundra videos that they have vehicles that don’t shut off when you unlock them with key fob or open the door.

... you pressed lock 3 times to get it to remote start. how is someone going to jump in and just run away with it? It's locked.
Liability? The tundra isn't a "hundreds of thousands a year" truck. never has been. its about 120k a year. Ram / Chevy / Ford sell that many 1/2 tons per quarter, ALL of them have remote start systems that don't do this and NONE of them have any "liability" issues where they are getting sued left and right because of this unbelievable theft of vehicles.
      There's no excuse. It's a dumb design.

Hey David, one problem I’ve experienced so far with my 2022 tundra. First time around I thought it was a fluke because the light came on and I was worried so didn’t drive it. Then later on that day I check it again the warning light and message disappear. The message was “power steering malfunction steering power low visit your dealer”. Now it happens again today. I’m definitely calling the dealership Monday morning and taking my car in.

David. I have remote start on my 2021 RAV4 Limited, 2013 LX 570, and 2015 F150 Lariat and I DETEST how Toyota and Lexus has it set up on the RAV4 and the LX570, specifically I hate it when it turns off as soon as the doors are unlocked and I have to restart again when I get in the vehicle. I don't understand the reasoning behind this. Safety? Preventing vehicle theft? Ford did it right with the F150. They allow you to enter the vehicle with the engine on but you cannot drive the vehicle until you have the key inside and you push the brake pedal and push the start button. I do hate that I am paying subscription to remote start my RAV4 now the trail period is over. I am paying just to use the remote start feature. I don't really care to know if my doors are locked or unlocked or my fuel is 1/2 full and I have 236 mile range left. I have owned two (2) Tundras in the past but switched over to the F150 with their aluminum body and has been thinking of switching back to Tundra again but these little annoying bits about the Tundra are tipping points preventing me from switching. Anyways. Keep up with you good content. Cheers!

I do appreciate your explanations. I really do. However, the "Profile not loaded" alert has been reported by multiple users. Definitely not just one user. Also, I do worry. A lot. There is a strong possibility that it is not a "user error" but the fact that Toyota has failed to make the infotainment system simple and intuitive to use. If the infotainment system design is not transparent and intuitive to use, it becomes frustrating and distracting to use. Distractions on the road, at highway speeds, are dangerous. One other thing, users should not be expected to have MIT automotive engineering degrees to figure things out. ... Other manufacturers have figured out how to make these "user profile" alerts transparent and simple, instead of annoying, frustrating and distracting.

Once I do that it’s loaded and im golden. The whole process takes about 20 seconds. About enough time to get my seatbelt on and situated prior to departing. Assume Toyota Software Engineers are a special breed hand selected from thousands of applicants to work at Toyota. That means you have really Big Brains working on coding and logic. What those Big Brains fail to realize is that less than 2% of all people in the world (maybe less?) have any idea what software is and how it’s logic works to control things like an infotainment system. I think the Toyota engineers need to Dumb It Down a little for the 98%+ who only want SIMPLE and not COMPLEX. The old Tundra was known as a simplistic truck. No need to swing the pendulum to the other end of the spectrum in this new design!!! Why? Just to prove you are a master of software logic and control. Please Toyota. Listen to your customers. BE your customers. Do some QFD quality function deployment and observe your customers trying to figure out what you designed and delivered to them. Right now you should have an ARMY of Toyota engineers coming out of their cubicles and showing up at dealerships to observe vehicle deliveries and to listen to what people ask or what confuses them. I have an offer Toyota. Put me in charge of that effort for you. I promise you great input into new Tundra 2.0 which will lead to design changes and production changes. Thank you always for your comments. No no, I'm definitely not advocating or supporting the subscription system at all - I don't like it either and I didn't renew my subscription for our RAV4 Prime and Tacoma. What I was saying is that if we are forced to consider subscription system (due to the fact that this is the industry trend), then I will only consider paying for something that is advanced or something that will cost more if I bought it as a stand alone option. So for example, if I have to pay $2500 to get NAV but I have a choice to pay say $10 per month to get the NAV instead, then it will be cheaper to pay monthly if I kept the vehicle for 10 years (just as an example). Or if I am able to get some special feature or capability through the subscription then I might consider paying as a last resort. But generally speaking, I don't like this trend either...

Congratulations on your purchase! Yes I am buying the OEM tonneau because they are the best in terms of keep rain and water away from the inside of the bed. I am not sure if the 2022 version is the same as the 2021 - I don't think so but I will find out soon when the truck arrives. You don't need to worry about drain tubes because there are already drains built in and water simply runs on the side of the bed ...

In regards to the guest profile thing, the youtuber your referring to he has 2 different videos about it. 1 is tundra infotainment, the other is likes and dislikes at 1000miles its in the 1000 mile one. He said he literally couldnt use the info screen for navigation because the guest window takes up 2/3 the screen and wont go away and had to pull over to the side of the road because it wouldnt connect to his phone to say he had a profile.

It's a shame that Toyota would go down this road of subscription service, is it not we all hold Toyota to a higher standard already..? The aftermarket already makes a remote start that uses your key fob to start thats all plug and play to by pass all this. I have it on my Tacoma.

I'll concede any and all new ideas for safety if those said safety features can be overridden by a simple override button paint it yellow with skull and crossbones and have one on the remote fob. Why can't a vehicle be controlled by the owner? Is it a question about who owns it? I guess i just thought I was living in freedom.

How long does Toyota provide replacement parts for a particular model? So, in the year 2038 will parts still be available for a 22 Tundra? I find I am running into some parts being no longer available for a 2005 4runner and I wondered if there is a defined number of years that parts are made available?

    • @AutomotivePress
      @AutomotivePress  2 года назад

Typically, car companies continue to produce parts for about 5 years AFTER the model has stopped being produced - but it depends largely on the volume of the vehicle. For high volume SUV like the RAV4, they will need to produce parts longer, for low volume car like the Supra, they won't produce longer than 5 years

Sir I am an aerospace engineer. Or I was. I built spacesuits. I understand tolerancing. I also understand TPS (Toyota Production System). I have ALWAYS enjoyed Toyota INHERENT quality. I’ll say quality comes in three parts. Part 1 is DESIGN. Part 2 is PRODUCTION and Part 3 is QFD. I’d like to see you speak to people Quality Function Deployment and how it impacts design changes and production changes. Now. Regarding Software quality. I absolutely despise when I hear User Error like for the Infotainment system. There should be a Poka Yoke for how the systems are set up so there are NO chances of mistakes. I do not like drive by wire systems. I like to be in control and not so much software. I wonder if you can comment. Do you think vehicles are moving too far into the software control realm? I worry that people are too fixated on their dashes and all the system information stimulus and not on safely driving!! What do you think? Are we making drivers LESS safe as we build in more gizmos and too much stimulus? Last question. Do you feel comfortable discussing Ford engineering quality vs Toyota? It sure seems like Ford uses more QFD information - basically they listen to customers more and give customers what they want rather than what it SEEMS Toyota does, which is skunk works designing trying to analyze customer needs and designing for that vs actually listening to the actual customer demand. Do you feel like commenting? I truly like what I see Ford doing and I’ve been somewhat disappointed by this new Tundra in comparison. And by the way I have owned a BUNCH of high quality and reliable Toyotas through my 60+ years. Cordially signing off and thanking you for such exceptional videos sir.

I’ve been dying…. DYING to get out of my F150 eco bust and get into the new tundra but after taking the higher road and being an adult about a new toy I realize I’m glad I did. Like you, I have an IT background (but chose to stick with construction business, imagine that, I chose income) and have realized that waiting for the bugs to be worked out will work out better in the end (and it’ll be less expensive) if I wait for Toyota to figure it out. I hate my ecobust but Ive also have realized it’s cheaper to maintain what I have and keep more coin in my pocket.. dare I say maybe even pickup a 2021 tundra until the new model bugs have been worked out. Regardless, I have a feeling it’ll take a few years for Toyota to figure things out and i don’t want to be the Guinea pig stuck on the road waiting for engineers to save me. Sigh,

I have a few personal opinions regarding the problems describe in this video.
#1) It is not 100% Toyota problem "per se", for the door locking problem. That kind of logic is pointless and needs to be handled free of charge to the customer ASAP by Toyota, regardless of how, where or whom they get the parts, to build cars and trucks branded Toyota.
#2) Subscription to utilize remote start. I agree and would personally not subscribe in order to have access to that feature. However, I disagree that it would make more sense to charge a subscription for "higher end feature like to check for how much fuel is in the car". When did, ''...check for how much fuel is in the car..." become a high-end subscription feature? Boycotting the subscription in the hope that Toyota will possibly rethink the program at some future date MAY be a delayed solution, but at the expense of reduced functionality that other auto makers provide for free.
But if I were in the Market for this specific truck or a car for that matter, I would tell the dealership that any existing door problems would need to be fixed, and the auto start and other basic features like how much fuel is in the tank, would need to be subscription free for life. If the dealership and Toyota could not get together and make that those fundamental things happen, I simply would not buy the car. Not buying the car would provide an opportunity for Toyota to examine subscription service and add on sales program.
Don't get me wrong, I have always been a huge fan of Toyota. However, last year I encountered similar "feature" add on fees, when my wife and I needed to replace our Camery and RAV4 with new models. Exasperated by the problem, we drove a mile down the street to the Honda dealership and purchased an Accord Touring and a CRV Touring.
Like I mentioned, it's just my opinion as a consumer.
    Redding Ca.

It turns out the guest mode/user profile issue wasn't user error as you had claimed, but is an actual issue that Toyota is going to remedy by February of 2022.

    • @AutomotivePress
      @AutomotivePress  2 года назад +1

Thank you for your comment. According to my sources and chatting with others who own the Tundra, the user error is still an issue (ie, users may be confused or not utilizing the system fully) but Toyota is also responsible for making the system a bit too complicated. The changes coming Feb 2022 is just an update and not a overhaul of the software, but hopefully it will still help people use the system more effectively.

Front and back are not very good looking. Engine power output is okay, but sacrificing a V8, I wanted better mileage, or at least more power.

Grew up in Montana and almost always had to park outside. Most of my family is still ther. I know what it means to have a cold car. Remote start is nice but honestly not that big of a deal. Ive had it on my vehicles for a long time but almost never use it. Neither doesn anyone else i know. Just go out and start the car. Its saving you like 20 steps. Slipping on boots is no big deal. Most of the time you have to stay out there and clean ice and snow off the windows for 10 minutes anyway. That last point is probably the main reason i never use it. I have to be out there anyway to scrap ice or shovel snow. So I dont see why people are freakn out about it.

And it’s easy to Monday morning quarterback a solution for the door locks after Toyota had to send 5 engineers to figure out the problem because they were stumped.
