Hi michelle. I would love if you can talk about azelaic acid. Like at wht ph it will be effective and how it works, wht ingredients that it will be best to pair with. Not so many people/brand talk abt this. Many thanks. Love ur blog btw! Xx
Please discuss tea tree oil. Apparently, it's an antibacterial ingredient that fades blemishes. Could it be used as an effective substitute for vitamin c to fade hyperpigmentation? Also, at what concentration would it be considered effective? The Body Shop is known for its Tea Tree Oil, and I think it consists of 20% of the overall product.
i'm pretty sure that i've said this before, but i'd like to say again, that your channel is so amazingly informative, super interesting, and everybody interested in skincare should be watching it! it's so great to have a person break down the benefits of and analyse something, rather than just saying "this is amazing, it costs $300, you should definitely try it!!" :D and it's thanks to your advice that i've started using retinol at 32, when no dermatologist has ever recommended it to me, suggesting i go with injections and weird laser treatments instead, that are completely unnecessary in my case, and as a result my skin is now awesome. love your personality, knowledge, and channel so much

This was such a fun video! Please do consider doing another video with Beck specifically on hyperpigmentation in skin of colour. I use vitamin c, azelaic acid, retinoids and am really good with sunscreen use but even after a year, I'm only seeing a slight brightening effect..the patches of hyperpigmentation are not really going away. Would love any information of this that you and Beck might have.

I love the timeless vitamin c with ferulic acid and vitamin E, it is exactly the same as the skincuticals. I get mine from YesStyle as it is the cheapest way for us in Australia. It is a coloured plastic bottle with a pump, which it means that it doesn't oxides as fast. I'm from Hungary, and for some reason, youtube just doesn't show me any videos from youtubers outside of Europe and USA, even when I search for a very specific topic., and they have the exact thing I'm looking for!
Regarding the niacinamide and vitamin c serum question... These two compounds (ascorbic acid and niacinamide) are stable at different pH, so you don't want to create a formula that contains both niacinamide and Vitamin C in one. But using them in separate products is fine.
Thank you for doing this collaboration video. I was hoping you would answer the question of oxidation. How do you know when your product has actually oxidized? I’ve heard that when the serum turns yellow you should just throw it out but there are some vitamin C’s on the market that come from good reputable companies that start off yellow. How do you know?
It is possible that these already oxidized because they were stored for too long or under 'bad' conditions (heat/sunlight).Look at the ingredients! if there is nothing that explains the colour it is the oxidizedvitamin c
Sorry about that 😊 when referring to well made I’m referencing formulation techniques such as encapsulation which allows for both actives to Work well in the same serum
Copper peptides don't play well with other ingredients ie vitamin c, vitamin a, acids etc. Pennsmithskincare has an excellent video re this topic if that helps.
Do you have any suggestion on removing skin tags, warts and moles? I’ve heard Vitamin C, turmeric and honey work well, but the are so many different recipes. .
I've always wanted to ask .. is there some truth to washing away your vitamin c ( say the diy serum one ) to prevent it from oxidizing on your skin ? Some say u can rinse it after 1 minute and some say 30 minutes. What do you think about this ? And thank you for the very interesting video.

What a great video! I am looking for a vitamin c that will not break me out. I have dry sensitive skin and would like to incorporate one in my morning routine. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Yes. I personally prefer to use other actives at night and alternate between lactic acid and retinaldehyde at night. Just making sure you aren't pairing it with something irritating

There are a lot of ingredients that help with PIH that are less irritating on sensitive skin eg niacinamide, licorice, alpha arbutin, azelaic acid, konjac acid, tranexamic acid etc etc etc. I can't tolerate l ascorbic acid due to the low ph and stopped using it completely. There are many videos from Dermatologists, Cosmetic formulators, master Estheticians on youtube re pigmentation and the different ingredients that can help. Best of luck.

How do you apply and layer in the morning? Do I dry my face, add Vitamin C serum then let dry before adding moisturiser and sunscreen OR can I apply HA on still wet face, put Vitamin C serum on top of that then let dry before moisturiser and sunscreen? Which routine (or another) is best?
I have this question also! You and Beck mentioned that Vitamin C needs to work on the skin at a specific PH, does that mean it should always be applied to clean dry skin - before any other products? Would a hydrating toner help or hurt with Vitamin C absorption?
Is there a chance that you can do an update on the controversy about coral reefs and sunscreen? I saw the last video you posted was 2 years ago and I was wondering if there was more info you found out recently bc I’m sure more research has surfaced. I watch SkinCareByHyram and he LOVES mineral sunscreen like Zinc oxide but in your video you said that research has shown the zinc oxide has harmed coral reefs. Thank you for ALL YOUR VIDEOS 🥳😘
How about the hype about B5 supplements to help with acne? Low key wanna try it before just going on accutane. Birth control didn't fix my breakouts frequency either.
@@erezshahak8854 No it doesn't - as mentioned in the video, it's photoprotective! Most of the first studies performed on vitamin C were on its ability to protect skin from the sun...maybe she's confused it with AHAs? But even with those, day/night use makes no difference because the photosensitivity comes from the reaction with skin, not from the reaction with the sunlight.
I watch her as well but most derms seem to say that it's okay as long as you use sunscreen over it. I've been using it that way and haven't seen any negative effects..I know anecdotal evidence but i have super hyperpigmentation prone skin and live in a scorching hot country. Just fyi, Dr Rattan is not a dermatologist...she is a doctor in a different field. I find this misleading since her viewers are probably led to believe that she is a derm.
Does Vit c during the daytime work as well for skin of darker colours..? Skin of colour specialist doctors do not recommend vit c during the daytime as it might lead to the worsening of hyperpigmentation..thoughts??
Personally I’ve found such positive responses in treating hyperpigmentation when using vitamin c and I tend to use it during the day because my night time routine is a bit more complicated and I like to space actives out. This far I’ve never noticed my hyperpigmentation worsening with vit c usage. Spf is also paramount 😊
Oh also, if you use a vitamin c which is too strong and irritates your skin then yes it can darken your hyperpigmentation because melanocyte cells products melanin in response to inflammation x
I haven't heard this from any doctors before - is it Dr Rattan, or someone else? Some other commenters have mentioned her advice in another comment, I've addressed it there :)
Thank you for the video. I don’t believe you mentioned THD like you find in truth treatments products. Is that a good form or a better form of vitamin C?
Yes if your skin can handle. Since cleanser is wash off should not cause issues. I have very sensitive skin I have not have issues. I only use a 8% vitamin c though.
I have age spots and haven’t seen any results from the various Vitamin C serums I’ve tried. Does it have any affect on age spots, or does it work only on dark spots from irritation or acne scarring? Thanks for this collab, it was great. I will check out Becky’s channel.
faith kamene I use tretinoin, which works wonders for fine lines and wrinkles, but still have age spots. But thank you for the suggestion, I appreciate it.
Hi Michelle! I wanted to ask you whether we can combine Indeed Labs Vitamin C24 Facial Creme which you recommended with iUnik Tea Tree serum? I've read that we shouldn't combine vitamin C with niacinamide, and there's some in this serum. Thanks :)
Hello... I'm Sanjukta from India, pursuing graduation in chemistry, I'm a big fan of yours, so lucky that found your channel... Do you please review some sunscreen brands available in my country please? I have super oily skin with too much acne, doctor suggested me PHOTOSTABLE (brand name) sunscreen, which makes it more oily, I use face compact to fix it, but it comes out with sweat every time, it's too much sunny n hot weather here. Please suggest me some tips( affordable, cause my pocketmoney is pretty poor, as I earn my money to continue my study) ... There is no nerdy skincare channel from my region😒 So much thank you for your videos, they are so valuable to me. Loads of love ❤☺
Hey you could try "La Shield matte gel spf 50 (white/orange tube)" (sometimes on discount on nykaa and amazon)..it's a physical sunscreen so you have to first rub it well into your hands and then work it onto your face. But it's amazing for preventing sun damage from tanning. Another thing you can do is apply some light translucent powder on top when the oiliness is too much. But honestly our weather is difficult to handle. There's no perfect solution.
This was so helpful thank you! I am just a bit curious on what you think about what age is best to start using vitamin c, I am gonna turn 20 in a few weeks so
Sorry a little late. I started using The Ordinary Vitamin C 23% + HA spheres 2% because it is inexpensive. If anyone else has used this product; can you tell me how long after applying will it tingle? Thank you!
Dear Dr Wong, do inorganic sunscreens (or all sunscreens in general) become less greasy during the autumn and winter and in consequence more difficult for removing by using lipid based foaming cleansers or solvents? I am experiencing that issue now. Thanks!
In warm weather pretty much everything flows more easily - sebum, cosmetic products, plus you sweat more, so I'd imagine that could affect how easily products come off your skin!
Hey. I do use a 10% vitamin c serum in the morning and continue w a spf 50 after applying it. But recently I've noticed that my skin has darkened a little and my product hasn't oxidised. What should I change in my routine? I do use niacinamide at night so that is the main reason I go for vitamin c in the morning 😩
I read that sodium ascorbic phosphate a derivative of vitamin c has some benefits for acne vulgaris but I don’t see other derivatives getting any hype are they not as effective? Also do formulations of vitamin c that include water destabilize it?
Ascobic acid becomes unstable it it's solubilised in water. To stabilise it we can add ferulic acid or make an emulsion and add vitamin E. SAP is really helpful in my opinion and I use it every day
Hi! Ive seem many water + asorbic acid formulas + glycerin or aloe, and sometimes just water. Ive learned how unstable the C from your talks under these conditions - but does that instability render the newly made 'unstable' serum useless right away? Would it work for a short time? Like 2 days and then throw away? I bought some ascorbic and am learning that perhaps I should just buy the product. However, on that note.....how do you know the product is stable......results!? Thank you!
What does it say the opposite for - sun sensitivity? No, the data clearly shows no increase in sun sensitivity, and the first clinical studies on vitamin C showed decreased sun sensitivity (those studies are how Skinceuticals started). I recommend asking Deciem if they have data to back it up, but from talking to them they tend to recommend things out of caution rather than necessarily based on data, so I'd assume it's that.
I have been using diy 20% vitamin c serum for over a month now but it seems like there is more breakouts than using it before what might be the problem
What ingredient do you want me to answer questions about next? 🤓
What about Sodium ascorbyl phosphate...is it effective and will it work on pigmentation and PIH??

Yes that’s correct! It it does sensitise the skin! So best to use in the evening!
Lab Muffin Beauty Science Wow, thanks for that sweetie. That’s why you are the myth busting skin cop! 🧡
Can I mix hyaluronic acid in diy vitamin c serum? Is it a good for a skin?
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience yes exactly..she recommends using vit c in the nightime..
Okay, I just moseyed on here from your DIY Vitamin C serum tutorial. Maybe I can get the answer to my questions over here, 😁.
Thank you for the video. I don’t believe you mentioned THD like you find in truth treatments products. Is that a good form or a better form of vitamin C?
Hey Michelle, can I use Vit c after salcilic acid face wash
Yes if your skin can handle. Since cleanser is wash off should not cause issues. I have very sensitive skin I have not have issues. I only use a 8% vitamin c though.
@@tinahancock4967 thank you
I use a 15% and I can handle it well
But wasn't sure if it was a good thing
Timeless & DRMTLGY
both make excellent products, the later is even better than Skinceuticals.
I have age spots and haven’t seen any results from the various Vitamin C serums I’ve tried. Does it have any affect on age spots, or does it work only on dark spots from irritation or acne scarring? Thanks for this collab, it was great. I will check out Becky’s channel.
Hi, maybe you can try a Retinol..
faith kamene I use tretinoin, which works wonders for fine lines and wrinkles, but still have age spots. But thank you for the suggestion, I appreciate it.
What other ingredients would be better that vitamin C for collagen production?
Retinoids!
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Thank you so much!
Hi, dIY vitamin c is same effect as market vitamin c
There is no nerdy skincare channel from my region😒
So much thank you for your videos, they are so valuable to me.
@@ManasviniSridharan ohh, thank you.. I will definitely use la shield. Thanks so much
This was so helpful thank you! I am just a bit curious on what you think about what age is best to start using vitamin c, I am gonna turn 20 in a few weeks so
I don't think there's a best age! You can start using it whenever 😊
I'm 20 and just started using it! I love it so far :)
Sorry a little late. I started using The Ordinary Vitamin C 23% + HA spheres 2% because it is inexpensive. If anyone else has used this product; can you tell me how long after applying will it tingle? Thank you!
Dear Dr Wong,
do inorganic sunscreens (or all sunscreens in general) become less greasy during the autumn and winter and in consequence more difficult for removing by using lipid based foaming cleansers or solvents?
Thank you!
So the Deciem page says OPPOSITE. I also think my face burnt in one spot due to the vitamin C. Doesn’t it make skin more sensitive to sun ?
What does it say the opposite for - sun sensitivity? No, the data clearly shows no increase in sun sensitivity, and the first clinical studies on vitamin C showed decreased sun sensitivity (those studies are how Skinceuticals started). I recommend asking Deciem if they have data to back it up, but from talking to them they tend to recommend things out of caution rather than necessarily based on data, so I'd assume it's that.
I have been using diy 20% vitamin c serum for over a month now but it seems like there is more breakouts than using it before what might be the problem
