So since he got separated from his friends at the end of the first game and in the 1.5 final mix version of Re:Com we see during the first Replicu fight there’s a Scene of Sora and Riku when they were little fighting with wooden swords And this was Like a tradition between the two And Sora would Know Since That would be A thing riku would know best. But the replica doesn’t have that memory. Sure he cares about Kairi but riku is someone he knew for most of his life. And It makes sense for why Sora is more emotional seeing Riku’s face after a Year in cryostasis. (EDIT) I mean if I was in a cyro sleep to regain my memory and I would Definitely be thinking about my friends a lot and seeing your Best friend who you’ve been looking everywhere for you’d be Crying too.

Sora had absolutely NO idea where he was or what happened to him after they sealed the Door to Darkness together. For all Sora knew, he could’ve been lost to the darkness forever, never to be seen again. Thankfully that wasn’t the case, but still. Sora traveled the worlds searching for his oldest friend, and came up with squat until now.

I really think that this is the scene where Riku should have turned back to his original form. His character arc in 2 focuses on how he can't do everything by himself and he needs his friends to keep him anchored. His appearance as Ansem SoD is a physical manifestation of how his sole reliance on himself has ruined him. So it only makes sense that he return to normal when he reunites with his friends and sees that they accept him for who he is and want to return home with him.
As metaphorical as Kingdom Hearts can be, I never got that vibe. Ansem was just the form Riku's body instinctively took on when being overcome by so much darkness. Since Ansem was the most selfish and despicable person who wasn't a Nobody that Riku had encountered when he decides he *has* to fully embrace the darkness in order to incapacitate Roxas, that was the form his body took on, complete with T-... big scary JoJo stand monster. His body is able to revert to his true form when Ansem the Wise's Kingdom Hearts Encoder Inator blows the fuck up, because Kingdom Hearts is pure light, so some of that pure light went into Riku. I wouldn't be surprised if that light became a plot point in a future game, since Riku is now effectively a human in a bubble of darkness in a bubble of light and is technically part Kingdom Hearts itself. It could be that Kingdom Hearts might be incomplete without the light inside Riku, explaining how even though Xehanort was USING Kingdom Hearts to power himself up during the climax of III, Sora was still able to defeat him.

Literally none of the Sora/Kairi scenes compare with even this one scene, that's not mentioning how Riku became a Dream Eater to protect Sora from Ansem, how he murdered another kid just to wake Sora up, Sora never shows this much emotion until KHIII where it all feels forced, and even then it isn't about Kairi, it's more about everyone dying. Kairi being Sora's light is incredibly forced and it feels like Square is romanticizing everything between the two because that's what happens in westernized media, like, bro, I came here for the edgy mickey mouse beating up people with giant keys, if you're gonna have a relationship then at least make it feel natural and not forced.
