These were some good choices! The first sentence of The Bell Jar definitely sets up things that are to come with the text, but how their motives are inhumane, let alone sexist. In general, shock therapy and lobotomies were the answers to solving mental conditions in that day and age and it was sickening and clearly did not work. It was interesting how Plath set up the story in that manner. The Wasp Factory sounds like something I would like to check out. It is quite something how you brought up Angela Carter and not being amazed by the book you read of hers, for I just watched another Booktuber that was just not fond of her fairy tales. Thank you for sharing! -Josh
I actually really love Ms. Carter's "The Bloody Chamber and other stories", but as with most writers she had some less impressive work :-D It's true with what you said, about the inhumane treatments and attitudes of the time. I was very impressed with how Plath was able to set up the themes of the book in the first sentences, as well as incorporate social commentary. It's hard to pull off, but she really did well! I really recommend "The Wasp Factory"! It's a really unique book with great writing, and one of the greatest plot twist of all time. I also loved the message of the novel too! Thank you for watching.
I agreee about the Bell Jar. Brilliant opening. I want to read the Wasp Factory sometime. Angela Carter is such a brilliant writer. I read "The passion of new Eve" and now I am reading "The magical toyshop". Love her way of writing.
"The Bell Jar" is on whole brilliant, but that opening has always moved me especially much. You should definitely read "The Wasp Factory" sometime! It's one of the best books I've ever read, it has so much depth. I've read "Heroes and Villains", "The Bloody Chamber" and the one mentioned in this video by Ms. Carter; I really liked "The Bloody Chamber" (I'm going to talk about it in an upcoming video). You should see the film "In the company of Wolves"! It's based on a short story by Ms. Carter and she wrote the screenplay as well :-)
I highly recommend! It's worth it's modern classic status. And Thank you! That picture was a real find, I love it when different sorts of book covers are lined up! :-)
Yes, true! Iäve actually read both books and enjoy both of them a lot! However I do have to say that I enjoy "The Bell Jar" a little bit more. Thank you for watching!
This is such a cool idea for a video and I really enjoyed watching. I read The Wasp Factory years ago and remember being pretty blown away. It was so unlike the books I'd read before and you're right, it has a fabulous and gripping few first lines!
Neat to meet someone who also read "The Wasp Factory"! It is very unlike a lot of other books, it has this odd dreamlike/nightmare-like feeling to it. And glad you agree with me on the opening lines! :-) Thank you so much for watching!
It's one of the best openings I've ever read! I highly recommend "The Bell Jar", the whole book is great. I read that in 9th Grade! I remember really loving "The Lovely Bones". I'll have to re-read it!
I haven’t read The Bell Jar yet but I really want to read that one! I’m actually reading her poetry collection called Ariel at the moment. I also haven’t read that particular novel but I’ve read a short story collection called Fireworks by Angela Carter. Her writing is lovely.
Oh! Is "Ariel" good? I have it on my shelf, but haven't read it yet (want to, though). "The Bell Jar" is really good, but very upsetting at times (I was so furious at how people mistreated Esther due to her mental health struggles). Was "Fireworks" good? I really liked "The Bloody Chamber" by Ms. Carter and liked it, so I might like that one as well! She seemed good at writing short stories :-)
I read Fireworks a few years ago so I don’t remember it too well other than finding it good (it’s a collection of short stories.) Ariel is really heavy and depressing as it was written right before she committed suicide but it so so well done. I’m really loving it and all this insight.
I am DEFINITELY going to have to check out The Wasp Factory.
Yes, I recommend highly! It's amazing! Thank you so much for watching!
Yes! The Bell Jar is a great choice for this topic! Also I love that pirate pillow in the background! 💜
Thank you so much! I'm happy "The Bell Jar" was a good pick. And Thank you! My room is filled with Skull merch :-D

Thanks for the recommendations! :) I cant wait to keep on expelling the works of Angela Carter :)
Very informative, keep up the good work!!
The Bell Jar is one of my favourite books! Really great topic, to do favourite sentences and take your meanings out of it.
Mine too! And thank you! The credit goes to Sam, but I'm happy my take was liked :-)
I've never read The Bell Jar but I'm really curious now. Wow. Look at all those different covers for it too. Thanks for including that.
I highly recommend! It's worth it's modern classic status. And Thank you! That picture was a real find, I love it when different sorts of book covers are lined up! :-)
Thumbs up for The Bell Jar, a rite of passage novel which often goes hand in hand with a clutch of other books, like 'Catcher in the Rye'.

Dreamlike is the perfect word! Couldn't agree more!
Thank you :-)
The Bell Jar sounds really interesting! So does The Wasp Factory!
I highly recommend both! They are both fantastic pieces of literature.
First one really sounds good. One of my favorites openings is from the lovely bones

Oh! Than there's two books to look forward to! :-)
Fantastic idea for video! :)
counselling & words Thank you so much! :-)
Cool concept!
louisity Thank you! Even if technically it's not mine but Sam's :-D
not a regular reader but this makes it more interesting ...
It's always fun to get a sample! :-)
I’m not a reader unfortunately but I bet these are great books! They have great first sentences though!
Two out of the three are absolutely :-) But all have the best openings! Thank you for watching.
