On The Waltons - Richard Thomas portrayed John Boy Walton based on the the childhood of writer, producer Earl Hamner Jr who also narrated the series. Earl shared stories of his family - played by Ralph Waite (John Walton), Michael Learned (Olivia Walton), Will Geer (Zeb Walton) Ellen Corby (Esther Walton) and his siblings. In real life Earl was the oldest of 8 children.
In this Behind the Scenes of The Waltons Judy Norton (oldest sister Mary Ellen Walton) shares memories of her years working with Earl and the lifelong friendship.

It was a great idea to have Earl Hammer Jr be the narrator, since the show was based on his book
Wish he could have recorded some of his books for Audible.
Yes he was perfect.
@@judynorton2598 No one else, except for Richard, could have been the narrator. The sound of Earl's voice, his Virginia accent, the simple way he said House, come to me anytime I think of the show.
He also had a great comforting sound to his voice, it was absolutely perfect.
Best line in The Homecoming "Why go around the world to find heathens to preach to when the Blue Ridge mountains are full of them."
One of my favorite scenes!!
A lot of people's definition of a heathen is someone who's religious views differ
@@jeffreydevoti7000 The definition of the word is not the point of the scene. I was meant as a joke in the movie.
@@jeffreydevoti7000 It's really someone who doesn't know God, or have Jesus as their Lord and Savior..
As a Christian, and a kid, I got mad at that [ so-called] evangelist woman. She was so Self-righteous.
The woman giving broken toys - and that doll actually spooked me as much as Elizabeth.
📻🙂
He had the perfect voice for this show, really added to it!
Yes he did.
People have tried to tell me it was Ralph Waite narrating. They're accent deaf!
Always loved to hear earl hammer narrate the waltons he had one of the voices that were perfect for narration
Me to!
Awesome tammy
He really did!
Sure did shirley
Yes he did.
Judy, when you said 'good night Earl'. I teared up. Thank you for sharing that with us.
You are so welcome
I did too! And I believe Judy was close to it also
This video is a beautiful tribute to him.
Thank you.
It's wonderful how grounded Earl Hamner was. Earl opening the door to his life helps to remind us of our past and to appreciate every minute. It is nice though you can go back and watch the Walton's. It is a calm place.
Judy thank you for sharing all Mr. Hamner accomplishments. Loved everyone on the show. God bless♥️
I myself watch the show to calm down and chill out at the end of the day! As you said, he opens the door to his life back in the day and for a few moments, you are transported back to another time and place. Though fictional and idealistic, it helps one's nerves settle down in an otherwise fast-paced and tense world.
I love the way you put that Tammy. !! Very accurate !! Its amazing that a tv show and the wonderful cast had so much meaning to so many and it reconnects us immediately to our past. For me there is no other show that takes me home wherever I am in the world except the Waltons. It is absolutely instant feeling of home.
You're welcome.
Learned a lot about faith watching the Waltons and still carry that faith and still watch the reruns.
There's a lot to learn about every day living when watching The Waltons!
So glad it helps you.
That was very touching. Earl Hamner Jr, had a real gift for sharing his life !
Yes he did
Why am I crying!!!!! When you were reading, I heard Earl's voice. The softness in his voice wrapped his words in tenderness and love. I am an amateur writer and I hope with practice and skill, I will be half the writer Earl was. (Jeez, I'm still crying). Those images of the blue ridge mountains are far from the surroundings I grew up with, but somehow Earl made those mountains feel like home. I know I mentioned this to you before, your voice is so soothing, I could see you doing ebooks.
So glad you enjoyed it. Keep writing- just like any skill- practice, practice, practice.
What a great idea!! Voice for audio books! 📚 📖 📙
Wow, that passage from the book, what a beautiful writer.
Yes he was.
So touching💖you really get to know his family in a way that makes you feel like your own family. Earl has a great talent. Now that's success. RIP Earl🙏
He was wonderful!
I LOVED Earl's voice introducing each episode...STILL LOVE it!!!! Perfect. It seems to me they should do another Waltons Reunion movie where John Boy does go to Hollywood and makes a movie about 'the Waltons'....that would be awesome!!!!!
Cool idea.
Judy, you have a beautiful, kind, thoughtful voice, also. Thanks for sharing your memories and research of Earl Hamner, Jr. Well done, keep up the good work!
Wow, thank you!

Hi! My name is Alma, and I'm an addict.....{a Walton's addict that is!} I've had all 9 seasons on DVD since they came out on DVD. Praise God 🙌
I'm so glad earl hammer created the waltons you did a great and smart choice to create the show one of the best shows ever in the world judy definitely is
Meant to say he did a great job and smart choice
Yes, me too.
I'm glad he did judy
For me, Earl's narration is part of what makes the show unique and special. His gentle voice is that of a true storyteller and the brief descriptions he gives at the beginning and ending of the show provide a snapshot of his life and his family.
Yes, that made the shows quite special.
That was beautiful Judy makes me want to cry 😢 😢😢
Ahh, thanks.
Hi! Judy, I'm glad Earl Hamner did The Waltons about his family. It's a warm and heart catching show that brings a family together on Thursday nights. He picked the right cast to play his family.😁👍
I totally agree!
I love the episode “The Journey.” How lovely to discover that Earl played Michael MacKenzie in Maggie’s flashback scene while dancing with John Boy! That episode still brings the waterworks! 😊
I LOVE that episode!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another wonderful share from you Judy-they sure got the best Mary-Ellen. Earls voice was golden and so fitting telling his own stories. This episode got me misty eyed. Thanks.
Wow, that was so moving. Made me think of my own life so many years ago.
Glad you enjoyed it
What a timely and beautiful Eastertide tribute to Mr. Hamner! Thanks so much, Judy! I second the book recommendation!
In the 1990s, I hosted a local live radio interview program where I live in Pennsylvania. A colleague at the station asked if I could interview anyone in the world, who would it be. Earl Hammer, of course. And, John Boy, Richard Thomas. My friend encouraged me to pursue such an interview. Not in my wildest dreams could I imagine Mr. Hamner would agree to such a small scale interview. Not only did he agree, he inconvenienced himself to be interviewed at 3:00 a.m. California time! My show was at 6:00 a.m. EST! Mr. Hamner sounded exactly the same as on TV ! The radio call-in board lit up like the 4th of July with local callers wanting to personally tell Mr Hamner how much they loved him and the Walton's! I could hardly believe I was talking with the original "John Boy" and struggled to maintain a professional demeanor.
People here have asked about Olivia's family. I learned in interviewing Mr Hamner that his mother's ancestors were the Giannini's, hailed from Lucca, Italy, and came to America as part of Thomas Jefferson's effort to establish a thriving vineyard for wine! Mr. Hamner's maternal ancestor grew Thomas Jefferson's vineyard! Here's a funny coincidence: My own great-grandfather came from Lucca, Italy! I wondered if that had anything to do with my fondness for the Walton's.
Mr. Hamner was so gracious to the listeners calling the radio show. He patiently answered everyone's questions and took as many questions as time allowed. He was/is the epitome of a gentleman and about as dear as anyone can possibly be.
Richard Thomas, too, sacrificed his sleep to answer countless questions from his many, many fans! And, Richard Thomas, too, could not have been more gracious! Such generous and humble people. Again, this quality of kindness and generosity just overflows from the very first broadcast of The Homecoming. You are all very special people. Much admiration and much love.
Easter Blessings to you and your family, Judy, and to Walton's everywhere.
❤️📝📚📽️🎬📽️🌹❤️🕊️
@Holly A Villella - Facinatting, thanks so much for sharing. Wish you had ownership of any recording and could share it!
Wow, thanks for sharing this. Yes they are/were both very gracious people!
I remember watching Spencers Mountain as a very young lad before the Waltons came out. I always liked that movie. As a child it was always nice to watch movies with kids that was my age. Thank you Judy for bringing the pleasant memories of my own childhood back to me with these walks down memory lane with the Waltons. I sincerely say the Waltons was my all time favorite show I watched and still watch it.
Wow, thanks for that.
That was so beautiful, Judy!
Thanks.
Loved your reading from "Good night, John Boy" , and hearing Earl's own words about his home in the Blue Ridge Mountains. That was quite special. Thank you so much.
Glad you enjoyed it
Earl's voice is the perfect medium to listen to a comfortable story of his family that sounds similar to so many of us with our families. It tugs on our heart strings now even more than when we were growing up. If you have been with the Waltons since the beginning then you too know the hurt of losing loved ones that comes with the natural passage of time. Not long after my mother passed my dad took his leave of us as well. They rest now under pine trees with scented needles all around and warm sun on them. It was very difficult having to sell our family home because none of us kids could take it over at that time in our life. When we watch the Waltons I think many of us see our family too.
Beautiful, thanks.
So true!
Thanks for sharing. Glad you enjoyed it.
You're welcome.
Thank you Judy. You have become quite a gentlewoman and your series is bringing forth much love for so many people. You are a very fine person and I admire your integrity. If my jabs about your nurse uniform caused you any discomfort, I sincerely apologize. Giving compliments today is so fraught with danger. Give me our days that you and I grew up in where we could speak openly. 😇
I never knew he wrote Charlotte's Web. That was the first movie I ever went to see in a theater.
He did not write Charlotte's Web. I believe he wrote the movie screenplay.
@@RamonaBreeze I misspoke. I knew the book was by E.B White. I didn't know he wrote the screenplay for the original cartoon movie from 1973.
A lovely tribute 💕
Yes, he was a very talented writer.
He was such a beautiful writer. Hearing his stories of parental and familial love was a dream I clung to during a difficult childhood. I held his stories tightly to my heart of what was possible, although not my personal experience. That it was possible to have family support and feel safe in a home was a dream that gave me hope for my adult future, when a child trapped in a home with recurring violence and trauma. The Waltons every Thursday night where the family of my dreams.
So glad we were helpful.
What a beautifully, articulate reading of a well-written preface. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Judy! You can almost hear in his narration of the show and then as you speak about Mr. Hamner that he must have been a gentle soul.

Thanks for spotlight on Earl Hamner Jr. Judy. Loved Spencer's Mountain. Mr. Hamner was a gifted writer and master storyteller. I didn't know he cast such a wide net! What perfect timing for this video Judy. Just last night I was watching a bunch of interviews with Earl on youtube. :)

Thanks Judy for this very moving tribute to Earl. Your videos make your fans truly feel like family.
Wow, thank you
I'm glad that we had Earl Hamner & the cast of "The Waltons" to truthfully portray the American family experience during the Great Depression. I'm sure many European families can relate to the show also. "The Waltons" family made it through the Great Depression with their virtue & dignity intact...Or, as Hamner put it, "living through a depression but rarely knowing what it was to be depressed".
Yes, a great line.
Earl Hammer & The Walton's. Made for each other. Absolutely beautiful reading and memories, Judy.
Glad you enjoyed it
This was great! I loved finding the video on RUclips a while back where he goes home and we see his mother and all of you talk to the real siblings you are playing. Just listening to you read I wanted to cry thinking of that time gone by. Thank you for making these wonderful videos!

Love the movie Spencer’s Mountain! Isn’t is wonderful that Earl Hamner’s writings were so well done that we have several insights into the time period and his family life.
Yes very true.
This was beautiful! I will read his book! I didn’t realize his vast talent! He was truly gifted. I think it takes great ability to develop a character of a living person. I’m sure there is a very fine line to walk... wanting to add dimension to the character, but being careful not to offend them in any manner. The Bewitchin' Pool (Earl Hamner) is a wild episode of The Twilight Zone.
Children dive to the bottom of a swimming pool and resurface in another world.
The first time I watched that episode was during my drinking days.
I thought I had seen all of The Twilight Zone episodes by then.
When I sobered up the next day I asked people if the episode I saw was real or whether I had dreamed it.
I have now been sober for over 26 years.
Did he do Jess Belle too? I knew he did a few Twilight Zones.
I will try to watch that episode again. I thought he was involved. It was from 1964. I never watched that one the whole way through.

I grew up in a white clapboard house in the 50s in Connecticut. I was the oldest of seven children. So many fun times and stories that I share with my beloved siblings. We had a barn, chickens and a huge vegetable garden. We swam in the creek down the road. We walked and biked for miles. Earl was such a great story teller. I wonder what his siblings thought of his stories?

Beautiful job Judy of reminiscing about Mr. Hamner and reading the passage from his book.
Thank you.
I loved Earl’s soothing narration - it was a constant, from “The Homecoming” in 1971 all the way through to “A Walton Easter” in 1997. Even when NBC tried to modernize the series a bit in 1982 - with new titles and theme song and brighter/less grainy film - they thankfully didn’t tinker with Earl’s narration, which still opened and closed those specials.
Yes, glad they didn't change that.
His memories created a Legacy.
True.
I tried to watch "Spencer's Mountain" but couldn't get into it because it had been hyped as the basis for "The Waltons". The first seemed to have the feel of a show like "Falcon Crest" or "Dallas" and I could see no comparison to "The Waltons". "The Homecoming" was excellent and truly the beginning of the Waltons.
I understand. Glad you enjoyed "The Homecoming" and "The Waltons."
Earl was certainly a gifted writer as proven by these words you just read. My wife and I, she 70 and me 73 now, still watch The Waltons on TV syndicated shows. It takes US back to our childhoods. She too came from a large family of 9 children. They never had a lot and were not "rich" by any measure except love. I have one sister but I am closer to all of my in-laws (I like to say in-loves) than I ever was to my own family. Thank you for sharing and bringing back some fond memories. I Love the "Behind the Scenes" videos. You do a great job.
So glad you enjoy them. Yes Earl was quite gifted!
I noticed in today's episode titled The Scholar, Olivia is going to her sister's with grandma to help with her sister's only daughter who is getting married. Only time I can recall a sister being mentioned.
Yes, wasn't a part of the storyline the writers pursed.
What a wonderful insight to Mr. Hamner. I so loved his accent. Being from Mississippi, I appreciate a good accent from everywhere. Thank you so much, Judy. I love all these episodes of Ask Judy.

I would recommend trying to find his earlier novels “Fifty Roads to Town” and “You Can’t Get There From Here”. They are vey good if you love the Southern genre. And definitely read the book versions of “Spencer’s Mountain” and “The Homecoming”.

Love the Heartwarming stories Earl wrote. "Though the tethers may have been stretched as we went our separate ways, they were never broken". Earl's writing about the Walton children grown and gone their separate ways in the world. Earl had an elegant and eloquent way of wording life he wrote about. I could always picture in my head what he wrote. I related so much. Judy, thank you. I love your videos. And you look Beautiful after all these years.
Thank you so much. Earl was such a class act and it was a pleasure to know him.
What I remember from Spencer's Mountain is Henry Fonda's character telling James "Book 'im Danno" McArthur's character..."Your no bull and that little girl is no heifer'!
Yes, a good movie.
What a lovely and moving tribute. I grew up with this show. My parents were from Earl’s generation but we lived north. I just lost my mum recently so I feel like my link to those days is gone.
Glad so you enjoyed it. Sorry to hear about your mum.

Your work then and currently are very much appreciated.

So glad to hear that.
I always loved hearing his voiceover narratives that began and ended each episode. They were as much a part of the series as the actors and crew. I could practically hear him telling bedtime stories to his children with his voice!
It was great Earl Hammer Jr wrote many episodes for Twilight Zone, as he wrote a really great episode, You Drive, where a car comes to life and starts hounding the driver after killing a boy delivering newspapers, and he had the honor of writing the series finale, The Bewitchin’ Pool

What a privilege to be able to pick up the phone and tell someone you admire, someone not so easily reachable to most people, and tell him how awesome he was. Earl Hamner, Jr. was destined to be the writer he was, had so much creative talent, and folks like me never had the privilege to tell him how incredible he was. I was only able to do that by being a viewer, a fan, and that's all I've got! And, yes, his voice. No one else could've read it like he read it. Again, destiny. Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome. Yes he was very talented.
My parents grew up in large families during the Depression.
Always wondered why they had so many mouths to feed during hard times.
My grandparents were lucky, my grandpa worked for the rail road. Trains are always needed in good times and bad.
In rural areas a large family was necessary because of labor intensive farm practices.
