    The coffee incident was too familiar to me! LOL
    I posted this on another comment section, but, I'll share it here, too.
    When I was pregnant with my first child, I did the bookkeeping for my father's paint store. I got HUGE with my babies as I don't have much room to carry them. I am small built. I needed something I could do that wouldn't be very taxing. Especially, at 6 months along!
    One day, a man came in while my dad was helping a customer. I said hello to him as I thought I should, at least, acknowledge him. He indicated he was waiting for my dad, so, I went back to my books.
    Dad got done with the customer and came back to where the man was standing, near the back door where the desks were located. Dad obviously knew the man and greeted him warmly.
    The man says, "If you'll have your secretary, there, make a pot of coffee, I can visit for a bit."
    I turned and just glared at my dad! Dad just went over and started making the jerk a pot of coffee and I returned, once again, to my books.
    He turned out to be a salesman my dad had been dealing with for years. I don't care. One, I'm miserably pregnant! Two, WTF? If he wants a cup of coffee, he can damned sure make it himself! I am not his mommy! LOL
    Thank you!

    My uncle owned a car dealership but let the manager run it. One day, uncle showed up at the lot in a beat up van, wearing sweatpants. He was just looking everything over, but he noticed none of the sales staff cam out to greet him. Walked into the office and fired the two salesmen that were supposed to be on the lot. Just because someone is dressed down doesn't mean they aren't worth your time.

      My dad had a friend who had something similar happen, he went to a dealership to buy a crossover for his wife. He was dressed down and was dirty since he just came from the diesel repair shop he owns and operates. His wife had already test drove a vehicle earlier and had picked one out of this dealer's on hand stick for her husband to purchase. He went there to haggle a bit and then buy the vehicle. He hung around the lot for 20 min. waiting for service and no one came out even though he could see he had been spotted by the salesmen. He went inside and the sales staff were standing around talking. Long tirade short, he produced from his pocket a large wad of cash, stating since they didn't want it he would be more than happy to give it to their competition. My dad has told me this story many times to emphasize not judging people by their outward appearances.

    • @15thobserver
      @15thobserver 4 года назад +7

      @@soccerguy354 So while the moral to that story is in fact a good lesson to learn. People like your dad's friend clearly missed another fundamental lesson to life: Treat others as you wish to be treated. I know this is going to sound weird AF because the implication is that everyone should treat everyone kindly no matter what, but life is more complicated than black and white so bare with me. If you go out in public filthy and expect to be treated with dignity, you are the only one at fault. Judgment is a natural part of life, and if you ignore that fact and EXPECT others to treat you like everyone else when you are a clear exception to their social expectations.... Is it really someone else's fault that you looked like you belonged at home taking a shower before you force another person to interact with you? But because going to a place of business is in fact forcing interaction, its even different than being in public. You as a human being are forced to meet your own standard for the Golden Rule: would you enjoy being forced to work with a client who was filthy and didn't have enough decency to respect you enough to be presentable when they fully intended to be meeting with you? And further more, expecting your clients to have enough decency to be bathed before coming into your place of business isn't really asking much (for a car dealership, there are obvious exceptions and a wide variety)
      I have nothing against people who work in professions that get dirty, I did that most of my life. But other than getting food, I NEVER showed up to places of business until I had taken a shower. Basic rules of decency and self respect.

      @Craig G Having worked at Home Depot, I can tell you that had nothing to do with how they were dressed. Did your sister and her husband actually try to talk to the sales ppl in that department or did they just stand there awkwardly expecting the sales ppl to walk over and help them? Hippie style these days is generally worn by ppl with money as it's back in style and this is especially the case at Home Depot. So it was most likely a case of lazy employees that didn't want to bother or that they got called away to help with something (like loading something large). Or maybe even went on break/off the clock.
      There's generally two main clothing styles - practical work clothes that are usually grubby and dirty and worn by contractors and ppl that know what they're doing/where they're going and non-practical clothing which is generally worn by ppl that either want to be waited on hand and foot and don't know what they're doing or they do know what they're doing and don't want to be bothered unless they need assistance with a specific thing (such as getting lumber cut or something large being loaded and purchased).

      @@15thobserver Very interesting point of view. In many ways I agree but I have found salespeople tend to lump anyone in jeans and a casual work shirt as beneath them. Not always but many of the new ones. A few years back I wore jeans and a flannel shirt into a car dealership along with my wife who was dressed very nice. In a 30 minute period we had three different salesmen but only one had an excuse to leave, he had informed us when we first met that he had an appointment.
      We looked at some of their used vehicles and at some new ones but my wife (the new vehicle was for her) wanted to look at a new Lincoln Navigator. Not one of the salesmen even tried to show us one. We left the store, but I stopped and told the manager we were leaving and would not be back and our reasons why. So far, I've only been on the lot one time in the six years since.

    I've got a little tale, about people at stores making assumptions based on how one looks.
    One time, at my lunch, I went to the New Balance store in downtown Seattle. I was extremely casual -- my office job didn't require dressing up because we never saw our "clients" in person. I was wearing jeans and a hoody, and sneakers. Right behind me, entering the store, was a nicely-dressed couple. The store person went to them first, disregarding the fact that I was there first.
    As he was doing this, I was browsing at their women's sneakers. After he was done with them, he approached me. I told him I have an unusual shoe size, 12 wide in women's, and asked what he had in that size.
    He was like, "Well, mens sneakers...." he started and I cut him off before he could start. "An orthopaedic surgeon told me that there's definitely a difference in mens & womens shoes and that I really should get womens NB walking shoes." He started again, saying, "Well, there's not much difference, we really don't....."
    Now, him contradicting an actual MD, on top of helping the couple who came in after me, was too much. I cut him off again. "You know what? I'm gonna go to Nordstrom's, where I know I can get good customer service." and walked out.
    Nordy's (as we call it in Seattle, their HQ) knows customer service. I was in and out of there in 15 minutes with a new pair of sneakers, during a very busy lunchtime crunch. I'd told the guy that I made the mistake of going somewhere else (I've bought big shoes at N's for decades) and would never do it again, lol.
    Kinda sorta a plug for Nordstrom's, because they really are awesome. They started as a shoe store many, many years ago and still pride themselves on having excellent customer service there and all over the store. No matter how slobby I look going in there, they always treat me with respect and kindness. Having done (phone) customer service a lot in my adult life, I appreciate when others are good to me. I've gone to their C/S desk a few times to give props to salespeople on the floor. Always nice to get compliments, not always complaints.

She should serve us anyway and be pleasant while we call her sexist slurs because her boyfriend certainly works here. She has to do what say anyway, for free, with a smile on her face! We will fire her boyfriend if she doesn't learn her place. How dare a strange woman in our waiting room not serve us?"

    • @LadanBeton
      @LadanBeton 4 года назад

      Yeaaah. The two-dimensional mustache-twirling villains, "do you know who I am," slurs, and a perfect sitcom payoff = this is most likely fake.

      @jenrabbit4444 4 года назад

      @@LadanBeton you like Tim Pool, don't you? 😊 I do.
      I don't know I used to think a lot more of these things were fake. I didn't think people would behave like characters in a really bad story. By "bad" I mean "people don't really act like that, most of us are just trying to get through our day, so this isn't remotely believable" so that the story isn't compelling. Then for the 1st time in my not m-short-so-far life (knock on wood) I happen to be unfortunate enough to have a new boss come on who is really awful. It's a long story, but the behavior is so off the hook, and that insane, abusive behavior is only directed toward certain people so that only some people see it. I had to delete some examples I initially was going to include because I don't want to say anything that could identify that person, as remote a chance as it seems. It is really really bad, and the behavior and the individual incidents are so just crazy-unbelievable. You just would never believe someone would do these things. But they absolutely have, and after working with someone like this, that's a real live person, when I never ever thought people would really behave that way has opened my eyes. It's (in my opinion fwiw) illegal in some cases. But after this I know people do really horrible things and even a group of if them will if they all get on the same wavelength and create the adult equivalent of high school clique. I know better than to go into detail with most people about what happens not only because it's a complicated and long story but also because it's really extreme and doesn't make sense. But even so I know now that these people are out there and a lot of times they look like a really professional really polished people. So although I hear what you're saying and I understand why you would think that I don't really think this is fake. I think the wording might be tuned up a bit but I think overall it's true. Which is OK we don't have to agree and I think your opinion and thoughts on it are every bit as valid. They are just opinions and neither of us really know. 😊

      @LadanBeton 4 года назад

      @@jenrabbit4444 First of all, I respect you considering the issue so deeply so I am going to put in as much thought in my own reply.
      I know people can be really awful and I've seen them be much worse than in the story - i think we all have. So I'm fully onboard in that area. I just don't see anybody, sexist or not, coming in an telling a strange girl, who is wearing casual clothing and sitting in a reception area "Hey, you, make me a coffee, I'll take it black!" Wouldn't his first instict be - I have no idea who she is and no reason to assume she works here? Then the guy, who is supposed to be a contractor - as in has no formal power in the company - plays out the "Do you know who I am" cliche and threatens to get her fired. That is laying it on a bit thick, especially when you follow it up with "rant rant rant some slurs here and there." What slurs can you even use in that situation? The b-word? maybe calling her a chick if that counts but anything else within another woman's hearing would be career-ending in this day and age and most people are fully aware of that. Then the receptionist keeps quiet instead of telling them she is not working there (being cut off... fine, maybe we can let that one slide.) But of course, what a twist for them, the OP just happens to be the king's daughter. "Walt, C, my office now?" is another cliche that I don't see people actually saying it IRL. And then the contractor lost the contract over this. Weren't we just told he was very important, both by him and the other guy? And Walt eventually losing his job, presumably because his boss disliked him so much over this incident. And the OP lived happily ever after.
      I'm willing to swallow one or two convinient details in these posts and still believe them. But this just has telltell signs of someone's fantasy that I already mentioned before. That's why my money is on this being a somewhat lazy-written short story rather than something that actually happened.

    I briefly worked in a business environment, You want to know why some people in business don't treat stranger with respect? It's simple. It's the zero-sum game view of life. If you can harm someone else, then they are a loser, and that makes you a winner. You should know that. If you live in the US, that summarizes the total life view of a prominent politician, as well as his political party. Harm others as much as you can, and you win.

My boos, the accounting manager, was talking to the new IT manager in his office and I was invited in. I had barely entered it when the new IT guy asked me for a cup of coffee. I looked him in eye and told him he just walked past it and pointed to where it was. After that, we worked together and got along great. Years later I was told I was one of the few people who got along with him.

    It is actually interesting why someone would bully a girl over a cup of coffee. Didn't even start with "do you work here" or whether that work included making coffee.
    At first I just agreed with the statement that we should we nice to everybody, which I certainly do my best to be... but then I realized something. Be nice and you might get friends, but be a bully and you might go all the way to the top. Sadly, that often works.
    "Nice guys are fine: you have to have somebody to take advantage of... but they always finish last." (Payback)
    Maybe that's why that bully needed to prove something for a cup of coffee, showing superiority. But it sure it nice when it backfires.
