I downloaded this track in the 1990's because I love the guitar, which made me feel happy, excited, and relaxed simultaneously. Great to see it all come together! I'm watching this June 2024.
I don't know about anybody else but I found this hypnotic and touched by genius.
It's a brilliant jazz interpretation of (I presume ) a complex Astor Piazolla tune, but whatever it is, I wish I'd been there.

This video shows us that a good composition can be brought in so many different ways.
Piazzolla had an open mind and would have loved this! Besides that the interaction between
the two is phenomenal and a plus in this rendition. They are mastering their instrument that
much that it results in freely playing no matter what the notes are. And why not? Great!

Like it or not, music is also sentiment, executive freedom and interpretation, not just traditionalism and orthodoxy, and in this, without taking anything away from the Piazzolla song, in this version, Di Meola and Alfonsi bring to light a superfine technical execution.

Como gimnasta, impecable como siempre; como músico, absolutamente nada que decir en esta interpretación. Me pregunto qué sentimientos buscaba despertar: excitación, euforia, asombro...
Dulzura, melancolía? para eso hubiera hecho falta hacer música.
enrique courtade Ese aire rumbero no me acaba de gustar... esta canción se merece un tratamiento absolutamente mas dramático mas calmado. De hecho no es una canción, es una obra de arte y DiMeola no le hace justicia. Y eso que para mi es uno de los mas grandes guitarristas que he oido.
Al di Meola es un gran guitarrista y más en su propio estilo.
Lo que aquí discutimos es que, la obra Oblivion de Piazzolla es melancólica, triste, hermosa, etc.
Y Meola se pone a rumbearla como si se tratase de cualquier tema popular aderezado con técnica guitarristica, de tal modo que estamos frente a una falta de estilo y buen gusto en su interpretación.

Yo también prefiero alguna versión más "clásica"...pero ésta está muy bien también...demasiado bien, diría yo...y Astor creo que estaría de acuerdo...no por nada a él creo que le gustaba mutar....de hecho él mismo se cansaba de ejecutar 2 veces igual una misma obra...yo que sé cuántas versiones de Adios Nonino distintas habrá sólo de la mano de Astor...son opiniones.

Es una versión muy alejada de la original, demasiada rápida, demasiado flamenca. Pero a pesar de esto, el tema es tan bueno que sobrepasa estos obstaculos.
Extraordinario guitarrista sin duda, lástima que se desfigura y hasta se pierda una gran obra musical. Lo respeto, pero no valoró cuando lo que se destaca es la técnica.

Your attitude really shows different:) I do play flamenco and appreciate and practice the syncopation and amazing right hand techniques of the great players although I am far from expert. If you try listening to Al with less "expertly critiques" and a broader mind you will see he has an amazing genius to his approach.
Judging from this you would say George Benson doesn't have a clue how to play a nylon guitar too just because he doesn't apply nor correspond to classical and flamenco posture.

Piazolla loved Al. He wrote pieces for Al specifically. His live performances are a fun departure if you know the studio versions--Di Meola loves syncopating against standard rhythm. I really recommend the albums Di Meola plays Piazzolla and especially diabolic inventions and seduction for solo guitar. You'll get the feel. Again, Astor loved Al's interpretations of his music. YMMV 🤷🏻

A veces lo simple es mas bello que lo complicado.que inventen otra musica rumbeada,mas respeten el sentimiento del compositor.

Di Meola does not use nylon. He uses bronze phosphor or bronze strings. The weird sound is his constant palm muting

...but is a personal version...everyone plays almost the same..here instead you can find a lot of ideas... i think Astor, who was a transgresor, would have appreciate this. At least I do, as an argentinian musician. But am also grateful for the respect for our roots your comment shows. Best wishes!!

Way too many notes - in Oblivion every note has a meaning.

say what you want, but with the times as they are now, "Tango" comes to my mind quicker with this arrangement than the original. And I thought other genres had it bad with the elitism.
+DarkestBeforeDawn This isn't Tango, he's playing the same sort of pick american "flamenco" thing he always plays, it's his style. Seems he doesn't see the difference between Argentinean Tango and Spanish Flamenco. Off course he can do as he pleases, but is a shame, he could have made the cover his own while maintaining the genre, it would have been refreshing because most nylon guitar players go for flamenco or gypsy music because of the technical appealing of the style but not so much Tango.

@@lightning365 He plays a nylon guitar. The piece is called Oblivion, it's a soft slumber, about disappearing into nothing, with melancholy and sadness, he plays it like a Rumba, like some happy central American dancing tune. What the piece is about is completely lost here.

Qué sabés lo que es la escencia del tema!!! Maravillosa versión. Música, libertad. Siempre los conservadores vienen detrás, criticando, en tanto los vanguardista por delante abren puertas. Esta versión le hubiera fascinado a Piazzolla.
