so classic it’s in 4:3
I agree that almost every racing game now is about scale. Horizon is the epitome of this. Underground was great because of the narrow scope. The small car selection didn't matter because every car felt different but good enough on every track. Customizing a car felt good because you don't have to learn how to morph shapes in a wrap editor. Any race is always challenging because you don't have to worry about a stupid performance class-based system. And it did all of that by not trying to give you every possible topping on the sundae.
yo, i miss your GTA V concepts ;-;
bring back millenia!!!
Tbh you only picked Horizon because it's the most well known example of scale. The true epitome is The Crew 2.
I absolutely love U1 for straight forwarding in gameplay, strong style and how it flows, even with endurance races, I think U1 ageing much better than even U2, I dont like U2 for really broad but laughable customizations, too long, representative and tbh dull campaign and forcing you to choose "best" visual customization is a no-no, While U1 is maybe lacking in content I'd say it gives better overall experience, the only my critic is only 20 cars, but I love what cars it is so its minor
Being classic doesn’t make it perfect, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I like Underground 2 more than Underground but I sure as hell ain’t going to defend the tedious open world nature of it when newer games have long resolved that issue
Idk why but I find that I like this aspect ratio, and adds to the theme of 'classic'
I knew this video was gonna be a banger, just because it's on 360p, on point with the inmersion, nicely done
Wait, track based racing with car customization, sounds like the Juiced series. Except EA did it better, since the progression was far simpler, and the PC version didn't have Xbox controls on screen. Also Underground to Carbon was very playable on a Keyboard. Modern games nowadays need a controller.
Juiced 2 is the best one period
@@b.1570 Hell Yeah, half of Juiced 1's progression was being dizzed by the cars you like and trying not to be an asshole. Juiced 2 HIN was buying the cars you want and need, (or stealing them from pink slips) and milking Bobby Sawyer for all his money.
@@Paulowpalace Not necessarily. Forza Horizons are more than just playable with a keyboard, the only thing you are not advisable to do, is to turn off the ABS. Other than that, turn everything off, and you can still easily handle an rwd car with keyboard (just look at Isuckatdriving's channnel). Modern NFS games are also easy to play with a keyboard, its just that they have horrible physics. Ofc there are some exceptions I agree, such as TDU2 or NFS Shift
Need for Speed Underground 1 will always have a special place in my heart. It was my first Need for Speed game on the original Xbox (my first selfbought console). So I have such fond memories of that game and once every year or two I'll replay (some) of it. Would love to one day see a spiritual successor of some kind.
Arcade track racers in general are imo way more fun than open worlds. Everything just feels tighter, more focused, you can jump in and out more easily. Some of my favorites are Gravel, Split Second, Blur, Driveclub, Wreckfest, and for NFS, i like the track focused games (even Shift) way more than the open worlds, be it classic or modern NFS. Most games nowadays just feel as wide as a lake, but as deep as a puddle.
And btw Jake, great commentary, you've been killing it with your vids👌🏻
I've frequently found myself wanting to go back to Underground 1 more than 2. Mostly because it seems to scratch that "2000's street racing" itch whenever I watch the first two F&F movies lol.
Also because I never played UG1 that much compared to UG2 and I want to play it more.
I always wondered if I'm the only person who favors U over U2? Things I particularly disliked in the sequel:
- it forced me to put plethora of decals, roof scoops and lights just so it allow me to progress the main story
- open world was pointless, for the hefty price - the chore of an uneventful drive to the race and then back again (looking at you, Jackson Heights) - all it offered were outruns (meh)
- both new race types were terrible - dodgems were stupid, URL's were booring
- I'm not exactly a punk/rock/metal head, but I LOVED U1 soundtrack, but the sequel's - not so much.
I really need to give Underground 1 another shot, it was a fun game. Also, i like the screen resolution detail lol. Epic vid
Juiced 2 for me is a special case. one of my favorite racing games ever. I remember just playing throughout the whole career without bothering so much about repetition cuz it was so damn good. Great selections of cars, customization, cool track designs and it had bets and pink slips.
btw unpopular opinion: I enjoy playing the URL in UG2
You're ought to try BallisticNG or Redout. That's exactly the right kind of challenge for a racing fan.
Also Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed gets positively challenging by the middle.
I’ve already completed Transformed to where I got the Hornet, so I know what kind of pain that was.
All the things in UG1 made me not like UG2 as much because I didn't have to explore my way to progress and get confused why I didn't reach the end of the game yet to later find out I had to chase random cars and race with them enough times. I very much liked the simplicity of UG1, I didn't have any questions with it, I just played!
I like that because UG1 is in 4:3, every other game that's 16:9 default is in 4:3 to fit.
I would just download the PC version and slap an Widescreen Patch, but i loved that detail.
Nice work man.
This is my all-time favorite need for speed game I got this game when I was in high school the same year when 2 fast 2 furious came out.
Where did people say that Underground 1 aged badly? Personally I haven't actually seen any talk like that at all. And I also wouldn't agree with it. I think it aged extremely well. The feel of driving is indeed one of the best in all of racing games.
I also wouldn't say that it has stupidly long endurance events. It only has a handful of career races that are over 5 minutes and even those aren't as long as the longest races in several of the open world games.
I see a lot on the NFS Reddit and different Discord servers, as well in retrospective videos.
4:34 thank you for giving The Crew 1's world the recognition it deserves instead of TC2 (even if it's in form of a ~2 sec clip). TC2 is identical in size, despite what people think, and is somehow even less detailed and filled. TC1 has an amazing huge and detailed open world and it should be recognized and appreciated by more people!
Today’s open worlds are just a level select screen for a bunch of closed courses with little to no encouragement to drive off the path or you miss a checkpoint. UG1 just removes that open world level select screen, at the cost of no free roam between races. I understand what you’re saying but I think todays games are already like that regarding the races
That's what Burnout Paradise and Midnight Club understood, so they gave us unordered races. By making us go through checkpoints in any order we choose, it forces us to know the map well in order to plan out the fastest route through them.
2003 had so many classics.. NFSU, Prince of Persia The Sands of Time, SSX3, Beyond Good & Evil, Freelancer, legacy of kain defiance
It’s crazy to think UG1 will be 20 years old later next year. My God... that. Is. Insane.
Only felt like yesterday when I was enjoying the heck out of UG1 on my PS2. I was sooo young, I didn’t even know what a “memory card” was 😂
UG1 and the sequel UG2 (which I played later in my childhood) are beloved masterpieces. It’s a nice shift from the likes of Hot Pursuit 2, (an equally amazing game)
good video, I should play Underground again someday.
I agree with the aspect of a closed track NFS game coming back as a way to take a step back and breath. Honestly, I wouldn't mind a Closed Track NFS game with all the new and great supercars, while racing on all the courses from 1994's The Need for Speed up to 2002's Hot Pursuit 2, maybe throw in some courses from Beetle Adventure Racing while we're at it because BAR was originally going to be a NFS game. Besides, as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has proven, not every racing game needs to be open world to be Successful.
I like underground 1 and 2 but mostly I like need for speed most wanted more. But not many people talk about need for speed Hot Pursuit 2 that was good game.
i definitely like track based racing games, ESPECIALLY if the game being confined to tracks instead of open world means theres more development time to spend on individual tracks, to make them more unique and memorable.
This was my first PC game, and all these years later it's still is my favorite one. Since then I've played pretty much all Need for Speed entries, and while enjoying them, Underground still remains on the top for me with nothing close. There is just something about it. You're spot on, Jake.
Underground 2 is my all time favorite NFS game. I might just try UG1 and check out how it feels. Personally though, I LOVED the open world in UG2. It was the first open world racing game I played too. Not to mention the customisation and having to hunt for parts shops, it was such a wild experience.
My problem with Underground is not the difficulty
My problem is with the RNG
If dudes complaining about difficulty in nfsu , wait untill they experience midnight club 2 lmao
You could even say the same about 3. There’s a big gap between Underground and 3 in difficulty.
hope that car x street can do something nicely done
CarX Street is open world.
For Me
Only Problem of Underground 1 is Cars Sounds
Underground 2, MW 2005 and CARBON Cars Sounds R Much Better
great video, i've have almost the same opinions as yours, and for me i actually feel nfs ug2 aged poorly.
As much as I am a fan of the traditional Hot Pursuit styled games, Underground 1 has always been a special exception to this. It might be partly nostalgia talking, since I did play it quite a bit as a child. However, when revisiting it before 2020, I really enjoyed it despite it issues. It's such a shame its always overlooked for Underground 2, which I just don't like compared to the first.
Great video. I also want a closed track nfs game again. And after being disappointed with this series for nearly 12 years, I think it's time for them to try something different.
NFS wide body.
One thing I hated about Heat, and it's probably because of the Horizonification of the series, is that there's no real incentive to win races. Underground is pretty brutal when you're not doing tournaments and I love it for that. Hopefully Unbound holds your hand less.
honestly that is what we need right now, less hand holding
My sisters and mother liked and played Underground 1, I sh*t you not
Underground still holds up to this day, I played through the game again about 2 or so weeks ago, and it's still up there, I'd say that it was better than Underground 2
Also you forgot that Shift, Shift 2, and ProStreet all had closed track racing and car customisation, of course ProStreet being my favourite NFS game
The lack of creativity and uniqueness has been depleted in trade for map size, graphics and controls/handling
Blackbox games are amazing until you try to finish them.
The only one I really struggled to finish was Underground 2.
@@TheJakeMG Their games are fun until the halfway mark, and there they start feeling repetitive and mind numbing by the end because they don't do anything different.
