The line Anna was hoping for, with the Knight sacrifice on c3 after she had played hxg6, brings up something I’ve learned what not to do in Classical tournaments. That being, “falling in love”. It happens to a lot of us, we see the current position, it’s our turn, and there’s plenty of time to make our move. So we look at what’s available to us, and by doing so, we scope out some possible lines that we find either interesting and or favorable. The catch however being that our opponent must play into them. Even if the line looks guaranteed, it will never be, so long as it isn’t forced. It’s okay to play into our interests, so long as they aren’t disadvantageous to us, if our opponent chooses to stray off the line we had hoped for. If the line relies on our opponent to play into, while also creating advantages for them for if they choose not to, then us playing into them will never be worth it. So then why do we play into these sort of lines? There’s countless reasons as it all depends on the situation in regards to the circumstances, however, what I’ve noticed to be consistent with these positions and circumstances, is that these lines are ones that we choose to “fall in love” with. Seeing them only as we choose to see them, being willing fully blinded by what we choose not to see within them, whether it be due to subconscious reasons or not, we must not allow our feelings to get in the way.
