- The 76th and final performance of the opera musical "Which Witch" at th Piccadilly Theatre in the west end. Even though it flopped big time, it still is one of my all time favourite musicals.
Loved this back in the days!
Guess if I was more than surprised, when one of my students had songs from this on their playlist! 2024!!
Why this is not a major cult classic is beyond me.
Sure, the plot is bizarre and over the top (of course, to be fair, so was the actual witch hysteria back in the day), but the songs are memorable and there is literally never a dull moment. If this is supposedly the "second worst musical of all time", I have seen several so-called "good" musicals that weren't half as entertaining.
(One has to wonder if the British critics would have been just as harsh if the creators of the show had been two middle-aged Englishmen instead of two young Norwegian girls.)
Definetly! I think one of the factors is that it wasn't written by someone well established in the community that made the press slaughter it. I've read a few articles criticizing it in the weirdest ways to the point you ask yourself: why is this relevant?
Back home in Norway it's almost considered a national treasure. It had a Norwegian revival in 2008. Unfortunately, it had been rewritten to the point where some of the songs had been written off to dialouge. Which ended up as weird and out of place, it certaintly didn't do "Which Witch" any favours. Which is a shame, as it is probably one of my all time favourite musicals.

My favourite musical! I saw this a few times (including this performance) during it’s too short West End run. I was always hoping they’d release the DVD like they had the VHSs 😢.

My wife and I had the pleasure of watching the 1990 concert version at Slottsfjellet in Tønsberg, which was a spine chilling experience, and I'm not talking about the weather. Excellent piece of work!

@@MartinL.A. Yes he had. He could sing like Ian Gillan, Ronnie James Dio, Ozzy Osbourne, Luciano Pavarotti, all pop, rap, blues, jazz, rock, prog, black metal, death metal and all there is. If you mix all these togheter, you have Jahn Teigen.

When I was 8 yrs old my father was given this Musikalopera on vinyl as a Christmas bonus gift (he worked for a Norwegian company) and we sat and listened transfixed as a family. My Mother, Brother (15) and Sister (13) hated it but my Father and I loved it. No idea why this recording popped up on my recommendations at this precise moment but I somehow really needed it. Thank you for posting. Wish I still had the vinyl. ❤

One of my all time favorite “failed” musicals! I bought the cd when I was in London, back in 93 not knowing anything about it (the show had already closed) but I was enthralled with the photos of the production that came with the cd and I took a chance and bought it. I was obsessed!! I loved it!! It was dark. It had great songs. Everyone sounded great! It didn’t end on a happy note! I loved everything about it! The only downfall to me was 2 songs. Daniel’s Prayer which seemed to drag on and on. Also the song The End. I didn’t care for the way that song was sung and her high opera note was strained and not nice on the ears, but, everything else is fantastic!! I immediately bought the vhs tape when I found that and it was great to finally see the show that I’ve only envisioned in my mind. I would love for this to be revived along with Metropolis, my other favorite failed musical!
Thank god, a show thats far away from A.L.Webber´s stolen music!

Yes please to this request. I was actually in this (I'm the first flying witch!!) and I had a copy of this on VHS and lent it to someone and never got it back!! I'd practically forgotten the whole production so watching it has been wonderful all these years later. It was such fun to be in it!

Ikke sant? Jeg virkelig ELSKER denne musikalen, og Benedicte Adrian er helt fantastisk i rollen som Maria Vittoria!! Det er synd at musikalen ble slaktet og måtte stenge så tidlig. Den må virkelig settes opp på nytt igjen!!

@@untitled797 Most people disagrea with you. If it were so exelent the show wouldent have ben canseled after 2 nights. In Norway we have a syndrom called belly button looking. A movie or act automaticly gett 3 extra poynt on the rating if its Norwegian.
@@Raekken1 After two nights? I think they did about 75 performances, this was actually one of the better performing new productions that season, but there was a major recession on and people weren't travelling or going to the theatre.

@@untitled797 Well I totally agree with you, I think this is a fantastic story, good actors and singers, and well done Benedicte and Ingrid (and Ole)for excellente music. I saw it in Sandnes Norway it was good then also With Johnny Logan as Daniel.

Visse ting her er klart og tydelig inspirert av Alice Cooper's ymse scenshow. De kan godt også kalles "rocke-operaer" da tekstene går hånd i hånd med sceneshowet..
Bare en observasjon.
Nowhere nearly as bad as everyone says. Perhaps an updated translation and slightly different production design on the demons/witches and I think this would be a solid show!
