- Опубликовано: 14 окт 2024
- In this resin metal cold casting demo, we demonstrate using Smooth Cast 325 casting resin along with metal powder to create a metallic finish. Cold casting is a term used to describe the process of mixing metal powder with a translucent casting resin and applying the mixture into a mold. The finished casting give the appearance of solid metal. The metal cold-casting process is faster and much less expensive compared with foundry casting of molten metal. Different metal powders such as Bronze, Brass, Nickel Silver and Copper can be used depending on the desired effect.

I turned off the volume and watched and learned. Thanks! Beautiful result, great art quality zone here. 👌
XD same lol
Love the finish, I do that a lot with pieces that I attach to my van. Pretty wild driving down the road and the looks I get
Excellent, excellent video!!
All tutorial videos should be like this.
Thanks for posting.
Verry late to see ,just now ,helping boost my knowledge ,so many thanks
Wow nice, you have a video tutorial of how to make or process of silicon rubber mold?
Perhaps this will help - ruclips.net/video/QxLSVuXGTNs/видео.html
Great video!! When i want to make the copper one, is it the same amount of copper powder as bronze in the video?
Yes the amounts of metal powders will be the same.
Impressive. I liked seeing the fact that this could be done in brass as well.
Hi! Great tutorial! May I know if the same can be done for smaller pieces like jewellery parts? Thank you!
You can absolutely use metal cold casting techniques for small, jewelry castings.
This is my first time seeing this process. Amazing and Awesome!!!!!!! I love the mold you chose to do. It looks fantastic:) Hopefully, so day I can give it a try:)
Bentley Advanced Materials is our distributor in the UK. You should be able to contact them for purchase.
This is a amazing product with stunning results:-) thank you.
Thank you for watching. Don't forget to subscribe.
Smooth-On ,I already have :-) thank you once again.
WOW! This is really interesting to watch and inspirational! I'll be keeping an eye on you guys as I'm starting up my little business soon. I'm wanting to mass produce products and it looks like I'll be able to do that with ease with your products!
Cheers!
It's much easier to brush the inside of the mould with a thin dusting of bronze powder before backfilling with your resin mix. Also you can sprinkle bronze powder on the resin just as it starts to set so the back will also have a bronze finish. Then all you have to do is burnish with 0000 steel wool.
This can also be done, but the gel coat method can allow for more aggressive burnishing.
Mixing different pigments with the resin and metal powder can produced these types of finishes.
wow very very nice and talented:) God bless you more and more knowledge.
GREAT! NICE VIDEO AND GREAT CLEAN WORK.
WHERE YOU GET THIS IN TORONTO?
Wow amazing ... Where to buy the molder ?
Smooth-Cast 325 tends to be a better gel coat material, but the same process could be followed with other resins. Note that Smooth-Cast 300 never gets quite as black as Smooth-Cast 325, so this might affect the finished appearance.
This is great, thanks for the video.
Thank you for watching!!
Is there anything more beautiful than classical art. I font think so.
Thanks for watching!
Me gustó mucho
Love it!👍👍

In this video there is no mention of a parting agent being used, is a mold release not needed? Also I was wondering how well the onyx adheres to itself as in an already cured piece? was thinking of casting one color then casting the rest with another.
Great Question. A mold release is not needed when pouring a urethane resin into a silicone rubber mold. When creating a multi-layered casting, as seen in this video, you will want to make sure that you pour your Smooth-Cast® ONYX against the Smooth-Cast® 325 filled with metal powders as soon as possible to achieve a better adhesion.

Thanks For Your Nice Vids.
Can you please show us how you make that reusable mold rubber on that model.
Thank you so much..
The process is a pour on one piece mold using OOMOO silicone as shown in this video: Mold Making Tutorial: How To Make a Silicone Rubber Mold Using OOMOO 30
really nice prossece sir
Ive tried adding a clear coat to your products and it tends to make the object sticky over time. Has anyone else had this problem? Am I doing something wrong?
Can you send us a tech ticket? Our team can help you - www.smooth-on.com/support/ticket/add/agree/
Is it necessary to use a silicone mold, or can you also use polyurethane?
I am wondering if there will be issues using an acrylic coating on top of wax. Would there be fewer issues using an oil based coating? Thanks much!

Is it possible to cast a positive with this method for a sculpture that has been cut up and needs to be reassembled? My first assumption would be "NO" but I thought I'd ask anyways. I guess the real question is, if so how would one reassemble several pieces, seal the seams and buff the metal?
Could I please know where to find this mold?
We do not make molds, but have a list of moldmakers who may be able to help you: www.smooth-on.com/moldmaker/
instead of brushing, can I use the 325 and powder in a rotocaster situation ? I have a hollow part I want to do and would really like to have the bronze effect cast-in instead of painting. thanks
Francois Mayer Definitely, many of our customers produce cold cast metal pieces via rotocasting.
Hi Sir, can u please make a video on how to create a fiberglass mold with out using latex or rubber?
Hi Tony, thank you for your idea.
I've seen other videos where they dust the mold with the powder first I like this method better but is there a advantage of one way over the other? Also I was planning on using the Smooth-Cast Onyx, will this have an effect on witch method I should use?
It is often difficult to keep the heavy metal powder on the surface of the mold. This method eliminates that issue. This process and e performed the same way with ONYX with excellent results.
Thank you for the quick response.
hi!
I would to know how i can clean my brush after used to put a+b+powder on surface. Thank you!
Kiashaal We recommend disposable brushes, as cured resin will be impossible to clean out. Uncured resin can be removed using mineral spirits.
Extremely interesting. Lea ray
Given the cost of all these elements is it really viable to do these, unless its part of a restoration ok but as merely a decorative element in a home, seems a lot ,,,
Second question: is it feasible/possible to use two metal powders in a single cast? Project is a knife blade silver or aluminum with a brass or bronze hilt.
This is definitely possible, but takes some practice.
What if you are casting one both sides? Like minting a coin this way, how is that done?
Also, when you add the metal powder, does the final product get the weight like the metal, and does it easily break?
If you want to cast more than a one sides piece, you could 'slush' the gel coat of resin with metal powder around the inside of the mold before backing the gel coat up with unfilled resin. This urethane resin is quite strong, and will get heavier when the metal powder is added.
Or just stop trying to counterfeit.
Well it's for replicating medals, with my own design, which has the coin size and that shape where I live. I have no intention of counterfeiting money, why should I do that? That is just stupid.
I was just kidding. :P
Haha lol ;-)
Hi! Thanks for your technical. Where can I buy these products can you give the names of the liquids and browns powder. what's the store? Thanks.
Is there any non toxic way to cold cast? Every article I have read about using resin says its very poisonous to breathe in.
+Siha You can also cold cast using duoMatrix NEO - a gypsum based product: www.smooth-on.com/duoMatrix%E2%84%A2-Systems/c8_1174/index.html

How plyable is the material after casting? Would i be able to bend it without fracture?
Ryan, once it is fully cured, the material is rigid. It may bend if mild heat (150F) is applied.
Ryan Calleja
From where do I get all these material in Mumbai, India?
Is it possible to rust the surface after everything has cured?
+Nicolas de Cosson yes, there are faux rust solutions available from art supply stores.
~thanks for this tutorial, it was very helpfull !
Which tint was used in the copper example?
Is it possible to use these powders with smoothcast 320? I already have the 320 resin and pigment on hand.
It is, but the results look better with a clear resin like 325.
i'm making a fairly small figure from my mold and ended up just making a 1:1:1 mix of smooth Cast 326 and brass powder for the entire cast, skipping the brush on stage entirely. however when i put it in the pressure chamber, it seems that all the brass powder gets pulled down toward the bottom of the mold (the top of my cast) so that it doesn't have an even distribution of brass in the resin. Is there anyway to prevent this without the brush on stage? also not using the pressure chamber causes bubbles, but i get a more even distribution of the brass. any ideas?
Hi David,
The settling of the powder is why we recommend a gel coat. We also recommend Smooth-Cast 325 over 326 because it has a faster cure time.
Thanks for the quick reply. I'll try the 325 instead next :)
nicely done
+nabeel john Thank you!
+Smooth-On can you please tell me about sculpture of fibre work

Can you get a mirror finish out of this?
Not a full mirror finish, as the metal particles are not the right size for a 'chrome' effect.
gostaria de contato para aquisição de moldes.
does it come in pewter?
Can this be done with urethane?
It is better to use a silicone mold, as silicone does not require a release agent. The drier surface of a non-released casting is easier to burnish.
good
how many pieces we can cast from this mold
It would depend on the detail in the mold. This is a reusable mold rubber, designed for many castings.

I have a question: Can I use Smoothcast 300 instead of the transparant one? It seems to be the same when adding the black tint, no?
