Don't get me started on those two. I hated Chuck with a passion. I only got used to the pairing because they had been at it for so long, and he did become a somewhat better person (I say that with caution).
As an opinion, I always thought that Dan and Serena are perfect for each other. People complaining about how Dan almost ended up being with Blair and has almost chosen Blair than Serena? No one remembers when Serena always chooses to be with the wrong guy than being with Dan. Let me flashback your memory. remember that scene with Colin? When Serena thought that Colin was not the one, he goes back to Dan, and invited him to go to Lincoln center together. then Colin showed up again saying he quit being a professor and chooses Serena and kisses her. And Dan? He stood there watching them. Serena always chooses the wrong guy and every time she fails she goes back to Dan and Dan is always there for her, never doubted her. But when Dan messes up with Blair, everyone thought he only choose Serena because Blair already choose Chuck. They both have their own flaws, many flaws with other people. But look at them. They meant to be together. In the end, they always find way to get back to each other. After all heart breaks, it's still them in the end. Cause what they have is love and is always there never changed.

I mean since Dan was Gossip Girl, he was the one posting about Serena basically making her the target and saying all of these things about her. Even if the info was sent to him, if he truly loved Serena, he wouldn't attack her the most and making her go through so much. It ruined not only her, but others as well causing drama, breakups, and losing friendships. Serena hated Gossip Girl because of how much that page came after her so much messing with her mental health, changing her ways, and drinking a lot. It wasn't healthy and to think that Dan, her "boyfriend" ;"ex"; "husband"; would say so much about her, might not be the best together. Their relationship was the best in season 1, but there were some trust issues and jealousy that broke them apart in the first place. This whole "getting back together" thing got annoying to the point where I stopped shipping them because it's like reading the same chapter over and over again, it gets boring and annoying to deal with it. I didn't think they belonged together in the end considering the fact that they had a troublesome past. You can't ignore the fact they haven't been in contact as much as they used to in seasons 4 and 5. He was pretty busy dating other girls and spending time achieving his dreams to become a writer. I honestly think Serena should've been with someone else rather than Dan who keeps leaving her. Serena chose to stay but he kept pushing her away. I could understand why she would want to go for someone else and kiss another guy right in his face to get a taste of his own medicine and to understand how she felt when he moves on so fast. But if jealousy was the only thing that brought them together, they aren't a match. I feel like Lily and Rufus truly deserve each other since they weren't nearly as toxic as their kids, but they really loved each other so much. They reconnected after all those years and had so much more chemistry. Maybe Dan and Serena were better off as sibling since their relationship kept ending faster than Sonic's speed. In my opinion, Nate and Serena or maybe even Carter. Nate cared so much about Serena whether they were together or not. He always had her back and was willing to actually be there for her throughout her toughest times. He listens to her and treated her the best in the entire show. It was perfect in season 1, but it got toxic after. Cheating, lying, heartbreak, jealousy, and basically were step siblings. I think the writers ruined Dan and his relationship with Serena that made me despise him. I shipped Dan and Serena so much in season 1, but it fell off with them.

Every piece of work he did, it was for Serena, his first article, his first novel ( heartbroken ), his articles in Vanity Fair. His most romantic piece was on Serena. See, sure they have done many messed up things but they did realize them later and even after everything they loved each other that's what is true love. They always came back to eath other only to realize that their love is so much more. No one and no relationship is perfect. Nowadays we easily use the word toxic. Every relationship has ups and downs, that is what life is. We are humans, we make mistakes we mess up but that shouldn't mean we give up on things. Dan was the best character, funny, forthright, forgiving and friendly. The writers made pathetic mistakes and ruined his character starting from around season 4 onwards. Dan was always trustworthy, hence every woman sought his help when they were in a mess. Hell, even Georgina Sparks sought his help when dealing with her baby. Dan and Serena had that spark, which you call as first true love and both of them never forgot that feeling. Hence, even though they had various other relationships, they always came back to their true love. Dan and Serena's chemistry was electrifying and they were amazing couple.

In the first season and parts of season 2 they were really sweet! Serena was so likeable and nice. In later seasons she became selfish and flaky.
