OMG, you changed my life. I have been trying to make a decent bassline for two years. This is the first tutorial from a producer whose music I listen to.
In 2024 this is still the best tutorial if one is looking for the typical snappy psytrance bassline sound. Just two things that may have changed over time: 1. Their is a better Waveform for the Serum Osc A. It is called MB Saw (if i remember correctly) and is to be found in the Analog folder. It looks similar but is a little curvy. Sounds more Liquid Soul alike than. 2. The volume in the LFOTool on the right side must be lowered to 1. It is on 10 by default. Otherwise it won't work. Love your music E-Clip 👍. Thx for the video!
@@EClipChannel Do you use FabFilter Saturn on your basslines? I found it pretty useful on psytrance basses to saturate clickiness and reduce the excessivness of lowend.
Good one! On your website I read the whole tutorial and only then saw there's a video at the bottom. I like the text but some people visiting your site may miss that there's a video as well since it's not mentioned at the top.
First of all, thanks a lot for the tutorial!! it helped me very much! but Im having some problems when i change de notes of the bass, any tips fot not screw up the timbre when changing the notes?
maybe a really stupid question, but do I still need to layer it with a sub layer? cause after that lowcut at maybe 50 hz it is to weak in the low low end or am i wrong?
Not a stupid question at all. But you should not add any sub-layer, actually, the serum provides more sub than needed, that's why I usually use the bend +/-!
Do you recod your output directly from your soundcard or is taken from the speakers ? Your sound has a very distinct character to it, almost like a square wavish influence / distortion, which i cannot reproduce no matter how precisely I follow your steps here.
I record through loopback, and this might be because of the soundcard or FL studio sound engine, I'm not sure how FL sounds as I never used it, but I did compare same results from Ableton, Logic and Cubase, and there is a difference between those 3 for sure.
I follow along, but the outcome is bit diffferent. Comparing the peaks on the EQ, mine is having shallower peaks and walleyes around the fundamentals. Actually if i put my bass one octave higher i get the same 'picture' and dynamics, but yeah it is too high for a bass. On the original octave it is dull compared to yours. Same processing step by step ... Maybe it is because i use FL ??
I do use external converters, but I get the same sound if do trough soundcard directly. Only thing I can guess is FL sound Engine or Audio Interface you use. If you use RME, you should definitely get the same sound.
Have you ever tried to do it with a hardware synth? Or do you have any proof that hardware can sound better than VST? As I tested many of the hardware synths.
@@EClipChannel It depends on what you mean by “sound better”. I definitely think it's nicer when there's still some life in the bassline. but I don't know much about the specific genre, maybe every bassline just has to sound the same.
@@EClipChannelRight, when I change the phase of the bass I can see kick wave degradation on osciloscope at some points and hear that kick and bass loose some of their low end. I would also recommend using Mautoalign or SoundRadix autolign tools.
Autoalign works with the latency, it migh move your bassline up to 20ms which is not so good. Only plugin that changes the phase this way is PHA-979 that i know of, never found any other plugin like that (there is one from UAD)
BappinProductions ok thx, i asked because i like medolic fullon (isratrance xD) and need a lot of differents ton between 2 complete poctaves...so with all the processes on individual tones and bouncing, it quickly becomes confusing^^
what music programme do you guys use.... i used to use a cracked version of abelton 9 live suit it was very hard to get started and i had to learn every thing by my self... is therer an esaier program to use to hav som fun with making your on psy/progressiv trance
Ableton is the easiest that exist, all others are much harder. You should notnsay that you need to learn everything by yourself in 2022 when you have so many tutorials ob the youtube. Some of us have learned everything by our selves when RUclips didn't exist.
The sound on the first note, that "sometimes" appears is not the end of the last note, it´s a prering caused (most often) by linear phase eq's ;) Here´s some more on this: reverb.com/news/linear-phase-vs-regular-eq-which-is-better
Try it without eq, and you will notice its still happening. Linear phase makes pre-ringing, witch apears before note played, not after. Anyway, LFO tool solves problem.
@@EClipChannel Thank you so much for this tutorial, I always felt after all the sidechaining there was still some leftover frequencies, and you answered it perfectly in this video. However, adding the 2nd LFO tool increases the problem for me instead of solving it, is it because I am using Ableton ?
I have noticed a few producers doing this asymetrical saw wave, what is the point? Does this not cause DC offset? and would this not just make a quieter wave? Great tutorial man!
And as well, processing is a bit huge, specialy if you use distorsions, and phase alignment, this shape of saw will only provide less low hormonics, but original shape will be totally different.
It changes only the phase. When you see wavefrom of the kick, and when you see the line going up, by changing the phase for 180, you would get same line but going down. When tweaking the PHA you should listen to low end
Not to my knowledge that i know any other plugin allows you to do precious phase shift as PHA-979. There is a plugin from UAD also one, phase misttres if my memory serve me well
For sure, but im not fan of much coloring, and if you look on the waveform after RBass, it kinda really makes it wierd. My goal is to do less possible processing.
Weird if I put the atack at 0 like in the video the click gets more washy I had to put the atack a bit later around 0.8 or 0.9 for it to sound the same, it might be a bug but this is how it worked for me.
@@EClipChannel yep 🙏👌 btw thanks for this, helped me a lot. Never would have thought to use a double lfo for sidechaining, at least not in this lifetime. 😂😂😂

Sure thing. LFO Tool should sidechain it, you need to disable “volume” on it so it doesn’t sidechain.

Depends, Progressive vibe you can get till 138, after that it just sounds as psytrance fullon.
How are you managing the pre-ringing from such a steep low cut in linear phase mode? Do you render the notes out and tidy them up there?
Always bouncing after finished processing. Better for many reasones, latency, pre-ringing, phase..
