@@Ricardo_Rick Ren did good things in his previous life and has personality disorders because of bullying and died protecting his friend from a murderer after doing something genuinely heroic. Itsuki is a different story and his actions aren't justifiable. His personality disorders come from his false sense of justice and a ego that he got while playing his games. Ren has a more ideal sense of justice and is actually heroic but is still clouded by years of emotional damage due to bullying and habit.
Ren does have some good qualities, but his personality issues tend to prevent him too effective. Itsuki is delusional, his pride blinds him from reality and doesn’t care or think of the consequences of his actions. Motoyasu has a blind faith in witch and has a poor judge of character.
My friend and I are anime-onlys. We were talking about the first episode the day after it aired. We had a hard time understanding/rationalizing why the other three heroes are still acting the way they do. Your videos have provided the context needed. I'm no longer that frustrated/annoyed by them as much.
He seemed at first like the kind of Character who was trying to do the right thing, but failed to take in to account the effects his choices had in the long term. As the Story went on I felt that he is instead the kind of person who feels his way of doing things is the only way and it not his fault if people fail to take advantage of the good he is doing. In other words a Smug Jerk who thinks his crap smells like Roses.
Sadly, that's not it. In his past, he was picked on, and now has a need for approval, and that he's great. He does what the thinks are rightous actions tempered by what will garner him praise, and can't hear the contrary. Ren and Motoyasu at least think what they are doing is right. Dull witted as they are.
@@fredfry5100 Actually in the LN he thought he was special due to his power. It wasnt until he got into MHA that he realized he wasnt all that an a bag of chips. Yes he was bullied later in MHA, but it was due to him being forced to realize he wasnt as special as he though that made him retreat in life. Even his Cursed Series is all about him forcing other to accept his point of view as the only one. He was full of Pride before he was Bullied and it was his downfall. When he got sent here he just returned to his pre MHA self and again thought he was special. I wasnt until he finally accepted this that he was able to over come his Curse. Honestly its a great tale about how hard it is to change and become better, a lot like Rudius.
Exactly! Itsuki is the worst of the 3 stooges, but it also means he has the most room to grow. His pride and preconceptions of everything make him the hardest of all to rationalize with which is not only the worst case scenario for Naofumi to get along with Itsuki, but it's the reason Rishia is so important. Rishia will be pivotal to the story and the puzzle piece needed for Naofumi to reach Itsuki. :P Thanks for the breakdowns of each character. It should also be mentioned that it's believed that the reason we didn't get to see the confrontation with Itsuki stems from a rule the author gave for the anime which was 'Not to portray the other heros as villains or direct antagonists' in the series.
While he is certainly a more complex character then what the anime shows vs the LN. Still can't let him get away with him subjecting Rishia to that treatment.
Itsuki's character arc in the light novels post *shenanigans* is probably my favorite recovery arc of the 3 stooges. He starts as such an unredeemable idiot wandering around doing what he wants like the MC of a Fire Emblem type game where the plot always conforms to make you the good guy, and seeing him actually be a person that realizes people are people is the single most satisfying arc in the books. [spoilery bits] Seriously, the patio/rooftop conversation Itsuki has after getting his ego back from the Curse of Pride, and the fact he's still acting like a doll as penance for the crap he put Rishia through is some of the most heartwarming Shield Hero has ever gotten. His fight after getting the Musical Weapon is also the most hype I've been for any non-Naofumi/Naofumi's 'harem' power-up in the entire series.
At least it looks like I wasn't alone when I lumped Itsuki and Ren into the same camp at the start of the story. Anyway, at the start of the story, Itsuki and Ren felt like they were polar opposites who, strangely, operated in similar ways and tended to take similar sides in conflicts. It was only after we got to know Rishia that the illusion surrounding Itsuki started to unfold and we got to see him for who he really is.
It's been so long since season 1 aired that I already forgot Itsuki played a console game and that Naofumi managed a guild. So much anime to watch, so little time to rewatch
I remember watching Anime America’s review of season 1 & I think there was a plot point where Itsuki slayed a dragon terrorizing village, but he left the body there and it slowly decayed into a rotting corpse that Naofumi’s party helped clean up. After hearing that I got the feeling that Itsuki is someone is who sea the world of Shield Hero as some big adventure without taking real consequences into account, but I didn’t know he was *THIS* bad
That was Ren that slayed the dragon and left it rotting, not Itsuki. Ren made a mistake there and when he found out about it from Naofumi he was remorseful. Itsuki caused all kinds of problems and still believed he was in the right.
I believe what Captain America said to Ironman in the first Avengers movie fits Itsuki in Shield Hero so far: "big shot with that bow; take it away and what are you? I've seen people without any super weapons and magic perform greater acts of heroism than you, you act like you fight to protect others but you really just fight for yourself. You may be one of the four Cardinal Heroes, but you had better stop acting like you ARE a hero."
Thank you for spending your time making this video to help everyone who is frustrated with the three stoges because of the way they still act, this needed context saves my sanity.
Remember too that the anime is only up to volume 6 - it may feel like a lot has happened but in the grand scheme of things these three are still at the start of their character arcs. Things will start to change in their minds as the story goes on.
Mald / Flashy Armor was the guy L'arc mistook as the shield hero before he finally accepted Naofumi was the true shield hero and a lot of the rumors were wrong about him
SPOILERS: I'm on volume 19 and I'm currently like, is Motoyasu's arc over or not? Is he going to just be like this forever now? Definitely not the conventional redemption arc I was expecting for him! But yeah, it's definitely entertaining. Itsuki's and Ren's developments were a lot more satisfying (at least where I'm up to) though, particularly Itsuki's because he went through the biggest change.
@@NatalieXHunter minor SPOILERS There is also the spin-off novel about Motoyasu that chronologically takes place during the finale of this LN and there, he's also like this. So his condition seems permanent.
SPOILERS That's pretty cool actually. Like, I was expecting some kind of standard issue character development, like he'd get screwed over and learn to be a bit less gullible but his loyalty and generous nature would shine through or some predictable thing like that, but no, instead he just ends up going completely bonkers.
Itsuki seems like the type of person to get the worse ending in a game on his first playthrough and wonders how he chose wrong not seeing the full picture of the story
Itsuki fails terribly. I really thought he would be a better strategist, but maybe I share Naofumi’s belief that he’s a smart piano playing kid. I think you need to do a deep dive on the side characters in each party. Armor deserves all the hate.
Ah yes. Good ol' Itsuki "Blind Justice" Kawasumi. In my opinion he is arguably the worst of the three heroes. Yes even worse than Motoyasu. I won't get into why as that's spoilers. But you'll come to understand soon enough. Great video Natalie. Also like the new look.
TBH he's basically a virtues signalling power leveler. He does things to look good and wants only strong team mates. He's the kind of toxic over competitive gamer, usually streamer, who paints himself nicely, but will lash out during matches.
That type of guy you just want to beat up over and over again. It's not like their relationship can become any worse anyway. Just keep hitting that weak ass bow fanatic
Also even though I already know, I would love to see videos on the curses. Also FYI Myne for the bad one in shield hero and Main for the good one in ascendance of a bookworm. I love how we have 2 Mynes in both seasons of anime lol
I can not wrap my head around anime only fans, I always dive head first watching anime, jumping to Manga, jumping to wiki pages reading lore and just swimming in spoilers looking for more information about it.
Yeah, personally I like spoilers, which is why I tend to make spoiler videos when I've read something - to give the information I'd be looking for myself if I hadn't read the novels but was curious about the story... But with Shield Hero there is enough skipped content that there are still interesting things to say about some characters without spoilers, rather than just telling people what they already know from watching it, so I'm doing some spoiler free content too.
Im really glad you're doing these videos because each one makes me really egar to read the LNs. I originally planned to start them like 2 years ago and have actually been collecting them since then. (I actually have the first 16 volumes) but right around the time I would have been able to start them Covid hit. I got insanely busy and afterward my time was eaten up by work, finishing up college, an internship, and then my free time went to Persona 5 Royal, Persona 4 Golden and then Genshin Impact which has eaten most of my free time since October of 2020. So ive never gotten further than part way into volume 1 and were the Manga is since I did read that right after like episode 5 of the first season came out. So now that I'm starting to get a bit more of free time I'm finally starting on the volumes I have and im really eager to get through them as well as get my hands on the volumes I havent gotten yet. And getting the these look into the other heroes as well as hints to were there stories may go has made me really excited to learn more about them. Its also cool getting insight on them from someone who has read the LNs.
I think Itsuki is the most unlikeable only because of what he did to Rishia, if we're going by sheer irritation level I hate Motoyasu infinitely more than anyone else. Also, I didn't know that Naofumi managed a guild, so now it makes sense why he's so good at management.
Motoyasu is lovable in his own way, but he is still an idiot. Unlike Itsuki, Motoyasu though may be clouded by his own sense of justice, is still trying to do the right thing and even apologizes when he does wrong. Itsuki blatantly ignores Naofumi even after being disproven by him and the others.
So Itskui is a wanna be vigilante because he treated unfairly in the real world. He also strikes me as a person that doesn't trust people unless he finds them useful hence why Rishia was kicked out of his party. His narcissistic attitude stems from the fact that just because he has power in this new world, he can do whatever he wants like starting rebellions/revolutions. This guy has a huge chip on his shoulder and if he's not careful, he can possibly start an unnecessary war while fighting the waves. Great video!!!
He honestly reminds me of base Deku and Bakugo’s personalities and story arcs in the early parts of MHA. Like Izuku being bullied for being Quirkless, he was bullied for having a weaker power compared to other psychics, but still wanted to be a hero. Like the early version of Katsuki by being a narcissist bully who fights for the sake of winning and proving to others and himself he’s the best
That said, Itsuki is WAY worse than those two, because instead of accepting his own flaws, he threatens and hurts others and claim it to be him showing them they’re misguided by evil. He kicks out the ONLY real person who believes in him cuz she reminds him of his own weakness. And when the truth is in front of his eyes, he still tries to ignore it and now by at least Season 3, he only joined Naofumi and the others apathetically
Ren and Itsuki are not bad people at their core. What they both lack is a certain mindset and awareness of the world around them. They could most certainly become valuable allies so long as they learn to get over themselves.
Glad you like them! I'll be doing a lot more Shield Hero stuff this season then adding Overlord next season, as well as keeping on with any interesting stuff for Mushoku Tensei and Re:Zero.
I love Mushoku Tensei, and I devoured your content on that. I love Shield Hero, and I eagerly await new content on that. I missed the truck on Re: Zero, but knowing you were once pretty much the Re: Zero channel, and coming to trust your taste in anime, I'm thinking I should go back and give it a watch!
Glad you enjoy it! I'll be adding Shield Hero stuff this season and Overlord next season - over time I'd like to be covering all the best isekai and LN series.
Now I thought itsuki was the next most sensible hero other than Nafumi. But when I heard that his group revered him as a God. I just blink at him. Real dick move to kick someone from the party because they "weak". But maybe I'm bias. I didn't give up on Donnel in Fire Emblem and watched as he killed everyone in his path when Altitude skill boosted his every level.
1. Naofumi: Is the most heroic because he doesn't think the world is a game and actually saved many lives while getting involved the best he can. He is willing to ask questions and be corrected and taught. He is the most unsure of the 4 and even admits it. He even thinks very poorly of himself and even refuses to admit he is gentle and kind even after Ost died. He is the most willing and heroic of the 4 heroes. 2. Ren: Is the more logical of the 3 stooges and the most heroic, his actions are way more justifiable because of years of emotional damage and abuse from bullying, dying while protecting his friend from a murderer, and habit. He is also the easiest to help get back on track and forgive because he is still a kid and Naofumi understands that. 3. Motoyasu: Is dumb, but he has no ill intentions and still has a sense of justice. He even apologizes when he does wrong when it is proven. Motoyasu can still be led in the right direction, though it will be more difficult as he is not a kid and older than Naofumi. 4. Itsuki: Has a false sense of justice and believes he's a hero, but will not deny that he did wrong under any circumstance. He will do things only to make himself look better and uses people like an item. Dude even refused to help a member of his party and even kicked Rishia out after she helped Naofumi. Itsuki will be the hardest to help get on the right path even if he is still just a kid. Itsuki is by far the worst of the 4 heroes.
My question is where is their will to survive? If I found out I was in a death game with waves I would be gleaning every bit of information, grinding non stop and formulating real life strategies. These guys are still in game mode which is one reason they are so inept.
Thing is with the bow hero he is just a kid and takes nothing seriously and his party he treats like npcs like they have no emotions or anything. He’s just a kid that can’t grip the reality he is in and I don’t think much can really help him out of that mind set unless it’s very dramatic
The way i have seen what Itsuki was is he is the worst hero next to the shield hero. SH can't attack so he needs a party, the bow ussally has that same problem it needs a party to prevent enemies to get near or else it's attack power is limited. In away he had al the reason to back SH as if he would be gone he as the Bow Hero would be the lowest tier. As for Rishia i am sure the guy noticed the bullying as being bullied himself. But he rather pushed her away from the group then let the bullying contiue. Changes are Rishia saw more of his true self by the rare times they whare alone together as changes are Itsuki like Diablo from how not the sumon a demonlord has to present himself as somoneelse to function in the world.
Here’s the thing about that “no melee” remark. There have been numerous instances of people fighting with how’s in melee. Wanna know why? The bow is a wound up stick… and people can hit people with sticks. Yes, I know that stat logic overrules standard physics, but Itsuki still has a decent atk stat.
Being a hero sounds good on paper except when you affect the regional politics. I feel like the show should not be considered misogynistic (of course), but rather as having misogynistic characters or those who have shown misogyny that become reformed. Reading up on what happens this arc, it kind of reminds me of the similar lasting impact arc 5 of re zero has. A lot of stuff will seemingly happen and I can understand the studio wanting to focus on the battle and the lasting impact. Also I really wonder if Myne deserves to get redemption considering she gets worse and does worse lol. Also in the ranking of getting isekaid, summoned people usually are stronger than those who are reincarnated elsewhere. Spoiler: Ya I read how he comes from a world of Espers which reminds me of the world of mob psycho lol. It’s interesting to compare the worlds. Glass’s world reminds me of a version of Japan where they are still following bushido. I have seen that version used in a few other anime. Also I joke Motoyasu comes from the world where the nazis won due to how weird he becomes lol. As I recall hearing, the spear hero spin-off kind of looks like a redemption arc similar to mushoku tensei where he’s not Filolialcon
All three heroes' world of orgin I feel like are homages to other anime. Itsuki's is Toaru no index, Ren comes from a world much like that of SAO's earth and Motoyasu is the general harem anime, with a pretty damn tragic ending
@@jimvoozhenzhan8435 you mean School Days? The marks are all there. He tries to date numerous girls at once, repeatedly, and he gets violently stabbed by two emotionally unstable teens in the end.
i'm an anime watcher, so unlike some of you idk all the details of Itsuki but i wasn't saw him as guy that goes with the crowd. i can't remember a single scene involving the rest of the heroes where he's the one to take action first. the dude does not have a simple decision making bone in his body btw, i know that the webnovel is completely non cannon but may i suggest you doing a video about the differences about the light novel and the web novel?
I'd have to read the web novel to do that - at the moment I'm still reading the light novels and I don't know if I want to immediately read the web novel of the same thing after that... There are 22 volumes of the light novel so it's not like just reading a couple of books.
thanks for this info its nice your giving us more to this lore i have yet to touch that novel but i am curious also really loving your new outfit XD its fantastic how are you making this? il come clean here for me there all terrible heros heck even more than another hero form the moonlight novel or aka Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Dochu but even that jerk is still more hero material than this 3 and i hate his guts i wont lie i want to that asshole to get whats coming to them but this 3 really make me say "they only look the part" this itsuki among the 3 i think hate the most bec of what he did to that girl gosh i dont know why XD i just love the way you say those words of how bad he is its have a hint of come cold and powerful XD its really awesome how you do that for me i dont see him naive i see him warp as you said warp sence of justice he clearly never looks back and except he do wrong he havea feel that no one ever told he sucks creating a delusion of him thinking he walk the golden path like i said the other hero in the tsuki ga michibiku isekai dochu i have issues with miles of miles of issue but he atleast havea mind sence to i dont know think more of out come and tactics and the imagine he will be to the people not like image oh im the hero all i do is never wrong like itsuki does but show "im a hero i need to keep certain imagine up" a feel of so so politician the other hero female is more politician brains than him but still does keep the imagine proper i cant believe this itsuki make me abit more respect that trash hero i dont like base on how he is and thats saying something as how much i really dont like that trash hero i wish XD you spoiler it i want to know more !!! but i guest il read the novel soon mmmm 0-o you really speak so detail and so amazing analyzing way XD i love ya explaining the game logic to the real world its very interesting way of putting it will ya make a spoiler version?
I'll be starting with spoiler videos for Shield Hero next week - I wanted to get caught up on the light novels first and I now just need to finish the latest volume.
Ahhh.. Itsuki my most hated hero. His arrogance and blind narcissism is extremely grating. Motoyasu after being confronted with the truth was willing to turn his back on Myne. Unfortunately I cannot say the same about Itsuki.
I'm excited for your take on the spear hero. I hope you talk about him further in the web novel but I would understand if you wont since that would be spoiler territory.
I'm doing a spoiler free video about Motoyasu today but I will be doing videos with spoilers from later in the light novel series very soon (I have a couple more volumes to finish to be caught up first) - similar to the Mushoku Tensei videos I did.
Hey, do you plan on douing a spoiler version of those videos, showing the 3 heroes redemption arcs and what happens to them the the future of the LN? maybe like a journey vdeo, kinda like what you did with mushoku tensei
Yes, I'll be starting with those types of videos very soon, I just want to get fully caught up on the LNs first (I only have 2 and a half volumes left so it'll be soon).
Without knowing anything about him in the LN I absolutely detest bow hero. The way he treated Rishia was the straw that broke for me. I do however find his story interesting and can't wait to see how it goes. I hope he feels guilty for the things he did by the end.
At the point I'm at in the LNs I don't hate him anymore and actually think what the author ended up doing with him was quite interesting. But where the anime is up to, he was easily my least favorite (aside from Bitch who is obviously Saturday morning cartoon levels of villainy).
Sounds like the other heroes aren't really one dimensional after all. I really need to dive into the light novels. It's interesting their attitude of being in this world is like playing a game without consequences. I've tried to play games like that and just can't. I tried playing RDR2 as the bad guy which does not change the outcome but it just feels wrong. Another example which is parallel how Itsuki treats this world. There is a quest in fallout 3 in which if you participate can result in the murder of an entire apartment building of people. I thought I was helping a discriminated people find permanent shelter only to discover later that the people I helped just took the original residence into the basement and murdered them. It was literally better to have just not intervened.
Ah you’re probably referring to the quest to liberate the ghouls in Tenpenny Tower from the rich bigoted humans in that tower, and if you decide to denote the bomb in Megaton you’re awarded a special room in that very same tower lmao
I always blew up Megaton just so I'd get the evil karma, because you got cooler companions if you played as evil... Also that made it feel more in character not to sacrifice myself in the stupid ending.
@@NatalieXHunter I see you’re a woman of culture 😂, yeah at Ten Penny tower if you have high enough evil karma you can recruit Karon, I never did because I always hated being evil even though I did bad things like occasionally steal stuff 😂🤣
Well, I am more a fan of F:NV and in that I usually play as good, and as a woman, but I also side with the legion. idk why, I just find that the most fun way to play it! In my head it leads to this good ending where the legion stop being so dodgy about women and slavery because my courier is their legate (and probably marries Caesar in the playthroughs where he survives) but they keep the cool stuff like the machetes and crucifying Benny and whatnot.
I second this.Motoyasu means well but he’s stupid and Ren just doesn’t understand the ramifications of his actions, but Itsuki is easily the worst to me.
@@MyGoodFunZZ Motoyasu is an unapolagtic ladiesmen, it's anoying to deal with and for anyone who doesn't have a trauma related to it won't hate him, "sorry naofumi". Ren would understand if he actually listened and stopped being arogant. Itsuki is inmature and simply hasn't seen enough of life to understand how these horrible systems come to be and whether just removing it without anything else might make things worse.
Wait wait wait wait... hold the phone... the other three heroes died in their worlds? I thought (based on the anime) that they were expecting to be able to go home after the waves, that they could be sent home... is that even possible or is that just a lie the heroes were told to placate them? If they're dead in their original worlds there's really no going back I'd presume? Well that makes things interesting... all the more reason for them to stop treating this world like a game. And a follow-up, maybe they can't send Naofumi home either and lied to him about that? If there's something worthy of wrapping in a spoiler tag, I'm cool with that. Spoilers don't bother me.
OK then, SPOILER: They can still go home. The legendary weapons are actually the spirits that summoned them and they will give them a choice to either return home, their deaths cancelled, and have three wishes granted in their old world, to stay in the new world and live on as a hero, or to return back once to complete any unfinished business (like say goodbye to their families etc) and then come back to the new world to stay. We know this because Naofumi gets offered this choice early at a point where it looks like the world is screwed, and the spirits in the shield explain it to him, and say that the other heroes will be offered the same choice.
@@NatalieXHunter Spoiler response Oh dang, that changes things (again). Their deaths cancelled plus three wishes? I could see all three non-shield bearing heroes going that route at this point, but depends on character growth... Thanks for the reply!
Ahh for some reason I was under the impression that this was completely spoiler free.. kinds wish I hadn't heard of the deaths. My mistake for not being more cautious 😭
That is stuff that was already covered in the light novels at the point where the anime is up to so I consider it skipped content rather than spoilers - I'm not sure when or if it will be brought up in the anime, but I can't see a way for them to include it in the next two seasons really...
@@NatalieXHunter Yeah they probably won't, I would assume that if they didn't bring it up yet ut was probably to maintain a certain less dramatic atmosphere for the targeted audience... But MAN.. this information changes my whole perspective, how tragic. I got kind of depressed when I heard it lmao!!! The whole time I've been hating on them hardcore now I feel like an A hole lmao..
Well, it just makes them the same as most isekai protagonists really - aside from a few exceptions like Naofumi, Subaru and Ainz isekai stories nearly always start with the characters dying in their old world, and I think the author just wanted that to be the case for these guys because they're all kind of based on other types of isekai protagonists. I don't think it changes much about them, but the deaths of Ren and Motoyasu do sort of fit with the type of characters they are.
@@NatalieXHunter Ah, I don't usually watch Isekai except for Re:Zero and This one. So that whole aspect was unknown to me until now. Thanks for taking the time to educate me on the whole thing! Lol
@@NatalieXHunter Btw, quick funny story.. because your name is a reference to HxH. So the first time I saw HxH it was during the greed island arc which led me to make the ignorant assumption that the whole thing was an Isekai and avoid it for YEARS until a few friends kept harassing me about it and I finally caved and watched it, and fell in love with it. Ever since I learned not to judge Isekai or any other anime by my last experience 😂
Not why Naofumi didn't die (though you can make various answers for that based on stuff we do know). As for why they remember dying - why wouldn't they? They remember everything else from their old worlds so why would they forget the moments prior to being murdered/truck-kun?
Spoiler alert! If they can be summoned from different Earths, why don't the Earths have waves or be invaded? I mean there is no argument to say it's because those worlds have no magic, there has to be some amount in order to cast a summon spell (even if the spell was cast from another world) which would take an extreme amount of magic. Just been on my mind since they visit glass' world.
I think that next to Malty/Myne and Motoyasu he’s my least favorite, no matter what I learn about him or how bad I do feel for him, I just don’t like him and his sense of justice
Another insensitive piece of work, it shouldn't take much to distinguish a game from real life. He lives by Ready! Fire! Aim! Good thing Naofumi is around to clean up his messes! But that is another story...
Most of the reason why the useless trio is so bad is because of how badly the main antagonist is written(Mayne), the next bad about the writing which is kind of trope in all isekai is how independent all the MC's are usually written. maybe those 3 are jabs at Isekai MC's from the author, but it kinda falls on its face while tumbling down the stairs simply cause Naofumi himself is written almost in the exact same manner other Isekai MC's are written, the whole "good in contrast" thing is simply cause the story is written in such a way to highlight Naofumi over all. The story could have been so much better if Malty was written to be a better villain as well as the useless trio. this kinda leads me to dislike the story more and more since the other 3 rarely if ever get any character development, even though I dont think Itsuki can get much given his twisted personality.
6:40 - Disagreed. In many single player RPG's, companions DO react to you. Try to play Baldur's Gate 2 as a chaotic evil necromancer and have lawful good party members. It doesn't work.
Sure, there can be systems like that programmed in but you always know where you stand with the logic to them (e.g., this person will leave you if they see you stealing or murdering). It's not the same as cooperation with characters controlled by real people in an MMO, in terms of how far applying what did and didn't work would go in a setting with a party of real people...
He's not, only Ren is really based on another specific character. They're all based on hero archetypes though, with him being the 'justice' type guy from a superhero type setting. Motoyasu is the harem protag, and Naofumi is the naive hero. Ren, obviously, is kinda based on Kirito.
Itsuki doesn't seem to understand the depth of an entire world resting on his shoulders more so then the rest. Him getting rid of Risha wasn't out of any need to keep her safe, just believing his party that she sucked like a character in an RPG with middling stats and he's not dealing with that. He seems very naïve in that regard is just believing what to others say, so it seems he was probably a shut-in and didn't like playing with actual people.
Well, the reader is seeing things from Naofumi's perspective, and so given that to him, they are people who cause a lot of problems and who he really needs to act differently, I think we're supposed to see them as not inherently awful people, but people who need to learn some lessons and change their thinking. They're not antagonists we are supposed to want to see brought down, but they're not yet heroes that we are supposed to root for. They're characters at the start of a much needed set of development arcs, basically.
The heros stories all involve mistakes, downfall, sin, and slow redemption. Learning from their mistakes and atonement will likely be involved is season 4-5. The heros are mean to be redeemed just like the Shield Hero is in the anime. Their stories will be told as long as further seasons are confirmed. Although... Spear hero's tale might end in a spinoff series IF it ever gets that far. He really is that much of an idiot, LMAO
itsuke is also weak mentally if he believes that every approach to every single player game is the same dose he even have a brain of his own? i highly doubt that he is even capable of independent thought an analytical thinking on the consequences of his own actions much less the feelings of his party members for this reason i think the world would be better off if a new bow hero was summoned risha deserves so much more respect than itsuke gave her the music in this series is beautiful and breathtaking when raphtalia was hugging naofumi i cried
Yeah I think Itsuki is the least likable of the three, but Motoyasu would be the more annoying one to actually try to talk to (though not for me, because I'm a woman, so he'd probably listen to me lol).
@@NatalieXHunter yeah, motoyasu is gullible when it comes to women and doesn't think about his actions for the most part; Itsuki is just a pain in the ass. I don't remember if it's true, but is it true that his curse is pride? I've personally always hated people who acted so prideful and full of themselves.
Yeah, it is. SPOILERS: Itsuki - Pride Ren - Greed and Gluttony Motoyasu - Lust and Envy Naofumi - Wrath Kizuna - Sloth There may be others, I'm only on volume 19 so I'm not sure if Vainglory shows up later or whatever!
@@NatalieXHunter I have no idea who Kizuna is, but I'll keep that in mind. As for the rest, we've already seen Naofumi with the wrath shield, but I'm curious as to what the curse series can do. I've heard that one of the other heroes unlocks their curse series during the spirit tortoise arc, but I don't remember who it was. Please don't spoil me on this
Like Ren, Itsuki has a hero complex. Unlike Ren, he doesn't have anything to back it up.
That's.....actually a very good comparison, well done
The way Itsuki talked, is basically the US foreign policy and western media.
My friend and I are anime-onlys. We were talking about the first episode the day after it aired. We had a hard time understanding/rationalizing why the other three heroes are still acting the way they do. Your videos have provided the context needed. I'm no longer that frustrated/annoyed by them as much.
Thank you!
Agreed, heck just knowing they all died before coming over changes things a lot.
Thanks for the breakdowns of each character.
[spoilery bits]
Seriously, the patio/rooftop conversation Itsuki has after getting his ego back from the Curse of Pride, and the fact he's still acting like a doll as penance for the crap he put Rishia through is some of the most heartwarming Shield Hero has ever gotten.
That was ren, itsuki act like he was Robin hood
I believe what Captain America said to Ironman in the first Avengers movie fits Itsuki in Shield Hero so far:
"big shot with that bow; take it away and what are you? I've seen people without any super weapons and magic perform greater acts of heroism than you, you act like you fight to protect others but you really just fight for yourself. You may be one of the four Cardinal Heroes, but you had better stop acting like you ARE a hero."
Lemme just write that one down, real quick… got any more?
Thank you for spending your time making this video to help everyone who is frustrated with the three stoges because of the way they still act, this needed context saves my sanity.
Remember too that the anime is only up to volume 6 - it may feel like a lot has happened but in the grand scheme of things these three are still at the start of their character arcs. Things will start to change in their minds as the story goes on.
I'd say so far in the light novels itsuki has had the best development out of him, ren, and motoyasu. Especially after the events of volume 17.
Mald / Flashy Armor was the guy L'arc mistook as the shield hero before he finally accepted Naofumi was the true shield hero and a lot of the rumors were wrong about him
It's kinda sad that we didn't get to see animated when Naofumi whent after Itsuki when Rishia tried to take her own life.
Good old Truck-kun popping up everywhere. One day people will learn that Truck-kun is at the end of every street.
Without spoiling, while I enjoy late-Motoyasu more, I liked Itsuki's redemption-arc the best.
SPOILERS:
I'm on volume 19 and I'm currently like, is Motoyasu's arc over or not? Is he going to just be like this forever now? Definitely not the conventional redemption arc I was expecting for him! But yeah, it's definitely entertaining. Itsuki's and Ren's developments were a lot more satisfying (at least where I'm up to) though, particularly Itsuki's because he went through the biggest change.
@@NatalieXHunter
minor SPOILERS
There is also the spin-off novel about Motoyasu that chronologically takes place during the finale of this LN and there, he's also like this. So his condition seems permanent.
SPOILERS
That's pretty cool actually. Like, I was expecting some kind of standard issue character development, like he'd get screwed over and learn to be a bit less gullible but his loyalty and generous nature would shine through or some predictable thing like that, but no, instead he just ends up going completely bonkers.
The white one also looks amazing, but the black one HELL YES!!! Thanks for a brilliant upload as always
If you think Itsuki’s bad, wait for takt.
@@elijahhayter3026 Dear God. Don’t get me started with that guy

Thank you so much Natalie I love when you cover the shield hero it’s always great look forward to seeing you next video
Just keep hitting that weak ass bow fanatic
please come back reviewing shield hero.. season 3 was just announced
don't forget that Itsuki world doesn't have spider-man in it
Also even though I already know, I would love to see videos on the curses. Also FYI Myne for the bad one in shield hero and Main for the good one in ascendance of a bookworm. I love how we have 2 Mynes in both seasons of anime lol
There is no myne only bitch
Itsuki reminds me of kouki from arifureta, both are overwhelmingly self-righteous and devoted to their sense of justice
Ah Itsuki. The hero I want to die the most.
I mean, that’s kinda why they were picked as heroes in the first place. They’ve got potential, but there’s a massive amount of room to improve.
love your voice !

I think you mixed up the names there.
@@AxelsVirtue your right I mean itsuki
I like him
My ranking of the four heroes goes like this:
1. Naofumi
2. Ren
3. Itsuki
4. Motoyasu
I'm glad to see the other heroes get development later on besides people I want to punch. I look forward to that.
Spoiler:
Ya I read how he comes from a world of Espers which reminds me of the world of mob psycho lol.
@@jimvoozhenzhan8435 ya I thought the same too

@@lonerboy18 It also gives you the ghoul mask right? very handy in certain situations. Plus it lets you rp as a ghoul without a mod i guess.

OK then, SPOILER:
They can still go home.
@@NatalieXHunter Spoiler response

That is stuff that was already covered in the light novels at the point where the anime is up to so I consider it skipped content rather than spoilers - I'm not sure when or if it will be brought up in the anime, but I can't see a way for them to include it in the next two seasons really...

But MAN.. this information changes my whole perspective, how tragic.

Ever since I learned not to judge Isekai or any other anime by my last experience 😂
Did they ever explain why naofumi was the only one that didn't die or how they still remembered that they died
Not why Naofumi didn't die (though you can make various answers for that based on stuff we do know). As for why they remember dying - why wouldn't they? They remember everything else from their old worlds so why would they forget the moments prior to being murdered/truck-kun?
FairPoint.
Like Ren is based on Kirito, maybe Itsuki is based on Shirou from fate stay nigth, that (SPOILER ALERT) he later become the heroic spirit of Archer.
Don’t disrespect shirou by assuming itsuki is like him

Hey Natalie is that bow-woman armor so you can draw the bow without hurting the boob, specifically on that one the right side for fletching?
I don't really know - I'm more of a melee fighter (I have terrible aim) and I just picked this outfit because I thought it was pretty!
@@NatalieXHunter fair enough and I shall back you with spells in either case. Just make sure you survive the giant boss fights.
@@NatalieXHunter a artist that did something similar was Kyung han Kim on artstation.
@@Dread2012death I’ll be the healer, then. Just a slight warning: don’t screw with the white mage.
@@elijahhayter3026 true you never mess with your healer unless they get the God complex.
What Isekai character is he based off of?
This might be stupid to ask, but is the reader supposed to like the 4 Heroes?
@@NatalieXHunter I see. Thanks for clearing the air on that
itsuke is also weak mentally if he believes that every approach to every single player game is the same dose he even have a brain of his own? i highly doubt that he is even capable of independent thought an analytical thinking on the consequences of his own actions much less the feelings of his party members for this reason i think the world would be better off if a new bow hero was summoned risha deserves so much more respect than itsuke gave her the music in this series is beautiful and breathtaking when raphtalia was hugging naofumi i cried
My most hated "hero" out of the three; I hate Itsuki even more than the spear hero.
Truck sensei strikes again
Yeah I think Itsuki is the least likable of the three, but Motoyasu would be the more annoying one to actually try to talk to (though not for me, because I'm a woman, so he'd probably listen to me lol).
@@NatalieXHunter yeah, motoyasu is gullible when it comes to women and doesn't think about his actions for the most part; Itsuki is just a pain in the ass.
I don't remember if it's true, but is it true that his curse is pride? I've personally always hated people who acted so prideful and full of themselves.
Yeah, it is. SPOILERS:
Itsuki - Pride
Ren - Greed and Gluttony
Motoyasu - Lust and Envy
Naofumi - Wrath
Kizuna - Sloth
There may be others, I'm only on volume 19 so I'm not sure if Vainglory shows up later or whatever!
Please don't spoil me on this
Ah, sorry, I thought because you knew that about Itsuki you'd know who Kizuna is, because Kizuna appears before that happens with Itsuki.
Itsuki probably sucked at the game he used to play cos even games with NPCs the choices you make for NPCs should make the NPCs useful.
I hate Itsuki so much it's unreal.
