JpJ is exploding everything here! A monster! One of the best bass line ever! And, the sound of the Fender bass, is incredible.... The rest of the song, they stole everything from the JIMI HENDRIX'S VERSION, of KILLING FLOOR.....

This is the bass line that has been stuck in my head since I first got my LZ 1&2, in 1969/1970. It is the funkiest, most sophisticated I have ever heard. I love JPJ, and it seems he deserves more attention than he gets.

I’m glad you’re getting into the more, raw blues Zep songs instead of just the rock hits. You Shook Me is my #2, but what about Levee? And How Many More Times? And I Can’t Quit You Babe? This is heavy blues as interpreted by hugely talented, British fans - Led Zeppelin. Have you ever heard anything like this before? How about after? I haven’t. People sometimes name some bands who sound a bit like Zeppelin, but nobody has ever done better blues/rock interpretations. The sound is totally unique. Some may copy, but nobody is close to doing what they did creatively. None of this would be possible without original blues music, so I gotta give credit where it’s due. But man, these guys were magic.

The way The Lemon Song finishes and then transitions into Heartbreaker on the studio album might be as good as the songs themselves. They really have to be listened to together. Your investment in The Lemon Song has to include another investment in listening to Heartbreaker. It's almost like lLiving Loving Maid and Heartbreaker having to be played at the same time as well. Funny though that Zeppelin never played Heartbreaker and Living Loving Maid back to back live because Page didn't like Living Loving Maid.

You had to live in the 70s to understand the ideas about copyright at that time. It was completely different than today. Everyone was playing someone else's songs and it didn't bother anyone. It was the success of Led Zeppelin that brought the problem to the fore. Many people wanted to be a part of it and the plagiarism lawsuits started like that. Back then, everyone was happy to have someone else play their song. Moreover in the case of Led Zeppelin, the added value is high.

Arguably the FILTHIEST bass line in any rock song ever. JPJ was absolutely killing it.
I didn't like the breakdown either at first, but it has grown on me. It's the breakdown at the end coming off the fast pace happiness that sets up the hard, cold final verse.
This is why Led Zeppelin are the GOAT.

Check out Your Time Is Gonna Come from their debut album. That John Paul Jones intro rules. Also highly recommended is Ten Years Gone from Physical Graffiti and the rousing The Song Remains the Same from Houses of the Holy, which shows Zep tackle the realms of art rock as if it were second nature. Terrific reaction.

Rest/Sleep is important. "Squeezing your lemon" originally meant "peeing" (since a yellow liquid), though Plant made the meaning sexual. The "Top" Zep songs should include "Kashmir" with it's great drums and vocals (you should react to it). "Top 5" Zep is tough, it's easier to do the "Top 10" Zep songs. One of my top Zep songs is "When the Levee Breaks", which you did react to. A less appreciated great is "The Battle of Evermore", though no drums, it's a haunting song.

Don't know if you've ever heard of this guy but he is credited by a lot of the earlier rock people with influencing them with his music and playing. Hard to believe that he is an early traveling evangelist though. His name is brother Claude Eli. There is an album with his stuff on it and if you listen you can hear the guitar he plays and it's in a lot of the early rock too.

credit... thats the way it was done back then. everybody used everybody else's stuff, zeppelin changed that. there are a few songs written and performed way back when that a half dozen bands "covered" and was never a hit. zeppelin took it changed the lyrics, speed it up, cranked up the volume and made it a hit. then they were sued because of it while none of the other bands that covered it note for note were sued. it was all about money

Perspective on "Rock History", the "Four Greatest Rock Bands" are usually listed The Beatles, Stones, Who, Led Zeppelin. Besides early rock Elvis, of the "Big 4" you only covered Zeppelin. For Stones, do live early-70's videos when they were considered the "Worlds Greatest". Try "Midnight Rambler" from Marquee Club 1971. For The Who, try album tracks "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "The Real Me". For Beatles, try "Day In The Life", "I Am The Walrus", or "Dear Prudence".
