Adama (in comparison to Cain) is vastly much more experienced, as well as his pilots are. He knows the weakness and strengths of both Galactica and Pegasus as he worked with these ships for much longer. What? Here is the definition of ballistic.
      Ballistic
      adjective
      1.
      relating to projectiles or their flight.
      2.
      moving under the force of gravity only.
      There is nothing in space but gravity to affect it. A cannon shell or a flak fragment would only be under the effects of gravity once it is fired. It would not travel in a straight line at all, it would fly in a curved line, like everything in space does, as the saying goes, there is no straight lines in space.
      Just out of cutiosity, in your last statement, what makes you think that the planet's gravity was not a factor even when they are close enough that they might hit the atmosphere?

      @Fabian Kirchgessner old doesnt mean bad ... sometimes older builds are more durable and have more firepower than newer ones but are cheaper to produce and have other qualities , like here Pegasus having its own Viper factory onboard. That doesnt mean Pegasus would be better ship in stand up fight.

    • @Asghaad
      @Asghaad 4 года назад +3

      @AKUJIRULE 1. those guns would not make it through the Galacticas flak screen
      2. Galactica has similar armament, the main difference between two models was speed, Pegasus having non retractable landing bays and armor. Pegasus was faster but MUCH more fragile ship
      3. you do remember that Galactica tanked two nukes like it was nothing right ?

    • @Asghaad
      @Asghaad 4 года назад +1

      @AKUJIRULE 1. doesnt matter its still physical projectile going through the massive field of shrapnel in space where the speed doesnt diminish ...
      2. would love source on that but even if that is the case the power of Galactica was always in its dual Battleship/Carrier role, its designed to wither out Basestar defense fighter screen then go in for easy kill while being almost impossible to destroy
      3. where, how about Galactica taking pounding from THREE basestars with power offline for extended amount of time where Pegasus getting obliterated within SECONDS of TWO remaining Basestars switching focus on it
      Galactica was designed and commisioned at a time where each colony could only afford to build ONE and it was build to take punishment, Pegasus was fielded when colonies were producing them in number (if i remember correctly they talked about there being about 80+ of the class Pegasus belonged to) and they were designed in such a way that emphasised forward firepower with relative lack of defensive armament because they counted on several basestars covering each other unlike the original ones that were designed to fight on theyr own against superior numbers.
      In short original basestars were designed as Battleships with carrier capability where modern Mercury class Basestars were more of a cruiser or destroyer with carrier capability. Also you can imagine how much of internal space Viper factory of Mercury class would take away from such a ship.
      In direct fight id say the two would be at stalemate where Pegasus wouldnt dare to get withing gunrange of Galactica but it would be able to outrun it so the result of the battle would hinge on CAG combat result (Pegasus had better fighters but Galactica had far FAR more experienced pilots and vastly superior command crew) which could go either way.
      dont get me wrong im sure in absolute terms Pegasus was decently armored, but compared to Galactica it was obviously much less durable design which was result of change in a doctrine under which it was supposed to engage the enemy. Im sure 2-3 mercury class Basestars would be much more threatening than 3 original ones, but alone they had serious design flaws that could be exploited.

      That's actually based on a real event. During the battle of Midway a pilot, Ensign George Henry Gay Jr, was shot down and landed right in the middle of the Japanese fleet. He floated there watching as the American dive bombers came down and took out three of the Japanese carriers, death and explosions all around him. He actually put his seat cover over his head to give him some kind of protection from shrapnel. He was picked up by a Catalina floatplane the next day and taken back home.

    I wonder what did the sentient Cylon ships think of the battlestars. Sure they were more advanced, sophisticated and even more elegant ... but unless they managed to catch a battlestar by surprise - their weapons were pretty much ineffective against them. Many missiles did not hit at all due to the sheer amount of flak fire, and the ones that did, caused only miniscule damage. And no amount of simple instinctively acting Raiders were enough to deal with their veteran Viper pilots. In return the battlestars had relentless ballistic cannons that tore a base star apart in the matter of seconds.
    I'm curious how did the hybrids see them ... maybe as simple, primitive beasts? Clad in a thick steel hide? Maybe just like hunters view big game? You can hunt them, but if they turn around and charge at you, you are done for ...

      @@Kelmorcellus Eh, to be honest I didn't like the way they handled the series in Season 4, and I didn't like the send off of so many characters - plus the whole Kara Thrace thing just confused the hell out of me, plus all the religious stuff was something I thought should've been focused on less. I do manage to get SOME closure in the form of a piece of Fanfiction called "Battlestar Prometheus" which tries to tie up those plot holes in a unique way, but even then the ending never sits right with me.

      Yeah, completely agree. So many great shots in all the space scenes, not just the battles. Admittedly there are some shots where the bullethead Cylons look a little weird and uncanny (the CG toaster Cylons never looked quite right, I guess because there are suit versions to directly compare against), but that's about it. The classic design Vipers make the switch from models to CGI perfectly, and they really went above and beyond in doing things that models simply can't, like Apollo's race in and around the mining facility.

      You don’t know how movie budgeting works. Most of those millions goes to big name actors; and cgi studios have to work little what is left over. That is why some big movies can have bad cgi due to not enough money and/or manpower. This studio worked very limited budget and yet their product is better than what we see today. • @beardedchimp
      @beardedchimp 7 месяцев назад

      @@mrpagrant you might have a misapprehension around those tests. The initial operation Crossroads had various ships, certainly not US battleships let alone 30+ year old decommissioned ones, maybe you were thinking about Nagato? That was only (ONLY hahaha) ~25 kilotonnes.
      The later Castle Bravo test at Bikini Atoll unleashed an unfathomable 15 megaton level of energy from a hydrogen bomb, ancient US battleships weren't even there to shake off the effects.

Nothing wrong with it at first but this dragged on for a few years and yet the AI seems incapable of understanding that maybe missiles aren't the answer and ballistic weaponry might work instead like how the humans have been using it to kick their asses time and time again.

      Well, I guess you already found the answers.
      The AIs hought to simply defeat the human battlestars by hijacking them.
      So they were created as carriers of riders for hunt human ships and nuke silos for orbittal bombardment, they werent designed to ship vs ship fight.
      The battlestars galatica and pegasus were older models harder to hijack.
      Once they realised the galactica and pegasus had survived, they simply thought that they could be defeated just with IA numerical superiority, so it wasnt needed to make new ships, just to catch them off guard.
