Another great review Michael, thanks. I’m a well practiced amateur, not a professional photographer, but bought this lens on basis of excellent reviews. It’s first major workout will be my daughter’s wedding in April. I love your photos and examples of use of this lens. I moved from Sony, bought an XT4, and have quickly grown to love to the Fuji system. Your reasoned explanations and clear explanation of this lens has been very helpful. Thank you!
Thanks! Just subscribed- this is a great review. Just getting into Fujifilm after Sony digital and Contax Rangefinder film. I just received my X-T5, 3 red badge lenses, as well as 16mm 1.4, 27mm 2.8 and am voraciously consuming all I can ref this equipment. Yours is the third and best review of this lens. Thank you!
Hello Gary! Welcome to the channel :) Many thanks for watching and for sharing these kind words. I'm so glad you found the 50-140mm review helpful. Best wishes on your Fuji photo adventures!
Looking to pick up this lens next year, l have several different mirrorless cameras and most lens tend to be focus by wire, the only lens that I have thst has hard focus stops is the Voightlander manual focus lens for my Nikon ZF and Z6Ii cameras. I have the big brother to the 5o-150 ,the 100-400, i have it on my Fujifilm XH2, use it for landscapes and wildlife and it works great on a camera that gives you dual IS.
Great overview of a superb looking lens. That flower close-up with the extension tube looked awesome. I have just bought the X-S10 with the 18-55mm f2.8-4 lens. I just give it a quick test in my garden and so far so good!
Hi Steve! I am so glad you enjoyed the video and welcome to the Fuji Family! I'm a huge fan of extension tubes - so much bang for so little bucks. I hope you have tons of fun with the X-S10!
I bought this lens earlier today and B&H was nice enough to honor the expired sales price of $1199. Still, I've been consumed with buyer's remorse all day. I've drooled over this lens for a long time but it feels like a frivolous purchase in light of all the nice glass I have. Watching this video made me feel a whole lot better. I'm sure I'll feel even better tomorrow once I take it out of the box and start to use it.
Hi Daniel! Yay for B&H saving you some money. Very nice! Yep, take it out of the box and get some photos going. It’s a fabulous lens, and my favorite portrait maker for solo subjects. I hope you really enjoy creating photos with the 50-140. Here’s to the adventures ahead!
Brilliant review Michael, I do miss the reach of my Nikon 70-200, I’ve been contemplating this lens for a couple of years now for my XT3 as I my main lens is the 16-80.
Hi! Thanks for your kind words :) The 50-140 is a nice complement to the 16-80. It's got amazing image quality, and the extra stop of light is lovely as well. Enjoy!
Hi Rory! Thanks for sharing your comment. when using teleconverter, it does change maximum aperture. 1.4X TC is one stop of light less (so, f 4.0) and 2X TC is 2 stops loss (so, f/5.6). Hope that helps!
I'm glad I found this, as I love my copy. I also found your recent 70-300mm lens. Magnification aside can you do a comparison on image quality, with and without teleconverters???
Hi Bill! Thanks for your question. I know for sure the images with 2x TC are just not as sharp with the 70-300, but did not really notice a loss of image quality with the 50-140 (less magnification?). I'll try in next week or so to carve out some time for a more careful (with tripod!) comparison of image quality on 70-300 with 2X TC. Cheers!
@@MSladekPhoto Wow Michael, this is above and beyond and much appreciated! Thank you for your dedication to photography. People like you make me never stop learning even though I started in film photography many, many years ago!

@@MSladekPhoto Fantastic, and very helpful and appreciated. Did you catch the thread on DPReview where there is a discussion that there could be a glitch in using this lens with the XH-1? That is the camera I planned to use this lens with. One poster said Fujifilm is looking into it. But, for me this is going to be a no sale until it gets sorted out. I could use it with my XPro-3, but I was hoping the IBIS between the XH-1 and the 70-300mm lens would be additive. I may be expecting too much. Thanks again for going to the trouble of doing this. If you don’t mind I’ll post your work on DPreview’s Fujifilm forum.
Hello. Are you still with Fuji? And if what lens are your must? I have the 23 1.4 wr and the 75 1.2 (thinking to sell ) to get this one zoom. For now I want to have only two lenses in my kit.
Hello! Yes, I’m still using Fujifilm cameras. Currently, I’m using the X-H2S. For street photography, my two main lenses are the XF 16-80mm f/4 (90% of photos) and the XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 for those hard to reach photos. I have not used the 50-140mm for street or travel, as I find it to large, heavy and conspicuous. I use it for events and portrait projects. I have the Viltrox 75mm f/1.2 that I really enjoy and use occasionally for street photos. Happy holidays!
Thanks for the replie my friend. I found the 50-140 NEW for 970 dolars. I got one. Your landscape pictures are amazing. I plan to do street portrait and model portrait with this lens. thanks@@MSladekPhoto
Hi. Thank you for this nice review of this 50-140 Fuji lens. There is a cashback promotion going on right now where the 50-140 lens would cost (after cash-back) around 1200 USD, I wasn't planning on buying this lens before some primes but at this price...? I'd like to ask maybe your point of view, I've heard somewhere else that if for instance you plan on using this lens only for vacations (a couple of times a year) one might as well consider the 55-200 (cheaper, lighter) but which shoots in less quality, I guess. I would mainly use the 50-140 for landscape and nature photography, on hikes or various trips. Would you say the weight is really a problem (and thus opt for the 55-200 for instance) or is carrying the weight worth it especially given the quality of the pictures? Thank you again.
Hi! Thanks for the question! Budget is always an issue, and I know if I didn't have a business use for this (portraits and events), I probably would not have bought it. It's so large and heave (relatively) that I would not take it on a "casual" photo outing or when traveling. But, if the price is right, the image quality is pretty amazing! Best of luck in your choice!
@@MSladekPhoto Hi and thanks for your time! :) I understand your arguments pretty well, I do actually have a 70-200mm f4 lens for Canon which is nearly not as heavy as the f2.8, but still I agree although it's a nice lens I take it less and less around... So I need to find a better use for it in short trips or one day trips for instance, not for long travels where it would probably stay at home ;) Thanks, I need luck now to make the best decision ;)))
Good review Michael. I've been thinking of getting this lens for soccer photos of my son for some time now. Do you think it will be good for sports photography combined with X-T4? Looking forward to see more videos from you. Keep up the good work!
Hi Tim! Thanks for your kind words. I'm not the expert on sports/fast-moving subjects, but here's what I know: the X-T4 has the best focusing system of all the X-series cameras. The main thing you can do to help focus tracking work is get those focus tracking settings configured best for your specific type of photography. That takes some experimentation to find right combo of zone size, sensitivity and whether or not to use face-detection. Also, I think these focus tracking settings tend to vary in effectiveness with each lens. Welcome to the wonderful world of the "art" of technology :) One more thought - have you considered renting the lens for a trial run? www.lensrentals.com has the 50-140 for $93 for a week rental, and then you have option to buy at used price with one week rental applied to purchase. Hope that helps!
Hi! It depends!!! The 50-140 is optically better and you get f/2.8, but it doesn’t have the reach (and costs twice as much) as the 70-300. I use the 70-300 lots more in my day-to-day photos and generally only use the 50-140 on paying gigs. Both are great lenses! Hope that helps… Cheers!
Hi Marc! I haven't watched the video in a while, but I don't think I said it was "TOO" heavy, I think I said it was "HEAVIER" than other lenses, and that made it less likely for me to take on informal/personal photo occasions. I have zero problem with the weight of this lens when it's the right lens for the photo I want to create. In fact, I'll be carrying it around for 10+ hours at a wedding this weekend ;)
