The saga of Barry really brought a tear to my eye 🥲 the more elaborate the story got…There was no turning back. Mad dog did the only thing he could have ever done
Hi Rick, I too have a hole in one story. About 3 weeks ago I scored a hole in one at my local course here in Ontario, Canada on the 7th hole of Trehaven Golf & Country Club. I’ve always said if I get a hole in one I’ll quit the game as obviously you can’t get any better, never expecting to get one! The hole is 154 yards and the green is below the fairway so you don’t see it. I’m a below average golfer that has totally enjoyed just about every aspect of the game - except losing golf balls. I said after hitting a 5 iron (Cleveland Turbo Launcher hybrid) that I may have hit the flag pole - to which the others all laughed. According to an app I purchased (SwingU) i have an handicap of 18.6 based on some kind of formulae over the last 20 rounds. Anyway back to the story - we the group I was golfing with got over the little hill at the end of the fairway and I could see 3 balls but not mind. The green has a nasty slope and I assumed that I’d simple run off the back - so with one of the others I proceeded to look behind the green for my ball. There’s a low thick hedge behind the green and if the ball was there - there would be no point to look for it. So I was in the process of dropping a ball back there. While we were looking the two ladies that were now on the green decided to putt out and when the first one sank her ball she proceeded to retrieve it and to her surprise there was another ball in the hole. She yelled out to me, what ball are you hitting? To which I replied a yellow (Colour blind some call lime green) Taylor Made #2. To all of our surprise it was there! The rest of the round was pretty unremarkable and I told them I should have kept to my promise of quitting after getting the hole in one. The next week I did golf once again and once again nothing special and a higher than usual score. But here’s the crutch of my story - the following week (now 12 days ago) I’ve suffered a stroke and have lost my balance. I’m not sure if I will ever be able to play again and in fact not until today I wasn’t sure I’d watch any golf or watch any of Rick’s pod casts or other presentations. So I’m happy to announce I truly enjoyed your show today and thanks for making a tough day fun.

Although Smith is going for money in part, I believe that a major factor of his decision is the opportunity to play more in Australia. At Painswick (where your course designer guy said to play) the 5th is a blind par 3. As juniors we would wait and do this all the time. The amount of holes in one for the seniors was amazing. And there was once a double hole in one! Very funny…
My husband and I just started golfing this year in Canada. Now that the winter snow has arrived, we have moved inside to play our Virtual Reality Golf+ games.....OMG, so much fun and as much fun as a simulator but more affordable. You both should try it.
The Barry story brought a huge smile to my face. My retirement plan now has become camping out at blind par 3's and placing the ball in the hole when someone old joker like me hits the green just to give them that satisfaction, and I'd a younger person is playing with them throw the ball as far away from the green as possible (by that time probably 5 yards off the green).

Hi rick & guy about twenty years ago my father & I were playing rounday nine hole golf course in Leeds, we were finishing off the number 8 a par 4 down hill driveable blind shot, these guys behind us were right up our arses and we're a bit impatience, as we were holing out a ball came flying over the hill to land on the green and roll up to the hole resting 3 inches away from what would of been an albertross, but definitely tap in eagle. My old fella was vexed and walked over to there ball and nonchalantly putted it into a nearest bunker, they didn't shout out fore! I walked up to triangle ⛛ bell and hit it with iron rod for a good loud five seconds, then we made our way sheepishly to the nineth tee daring not to look back, then to proceed to get out of dodge city. To this day I wonder if the guy who played the fantastic shot is still perplexed and scratching head of how his ball ended up in a bunker.
Would love to hear you talk about Rory's super dodgy relief on the 18th hole after hitting the grandstands, having the ball buried in the rough but with enough space to swing, then taking 4 drops from below his knee height until the ball was sitting high on the grass like a tee (versus taking any of the previous drops in the SAME spot that were also buried deep in the rough). Only 1 article has talked about this and now it's impossible to find footage of it until they release the entire replay footage of the round.
He didn’t have enough room to swing… his hands were almost hitting the grandstand without a club when he stood over the ball. I don’t know how people completely ignore that fact.
I can't believe Rick struggled to pick a final player for the Good Good Vs Rick Shiels Euro Team in a Ryder cup format......HELLO!!!!! What about the amazing Guy Charnock sitting opposite? 🤔 James Robinson should be head of the pick too, would love to see him play Tig or G-rat would be an awesome competition!!!
Hi rick & guy even though I haven't had a hole in one I have hit the pin, had three/four shots within 6 inches of hole in one, I've had second shots go in from 100yards away three times. My father had two holes in one 6weeks apart back in July & August of 1993.his ist shot from tee sliced badly, so he said pass me another ball out of his bag so I gave him a scabby yellow ball he tee up his ball hit it one bounce straight in the hole from the tee, his second hole in one was 6weeks later same course 17th Brandon shadwell near Leeds, then his last hole he shot a downing street, 10 he has his two golf balls attached to a marble plinth and now resting in pride of place on the mantle piece.
I agree with the comment on clubs as my golf pro gave a driver to try then went and did figure on simulator and said stay with driver and tips the new driver in a year or two I was amazed and so proud he did not sell me any old driver for the money this is what all pros should do ? Golf bidder is great if you know what you want / need other wise see your local pro ?
I'm so much more interested in and entertained by the YT golf scene than anything the pro leagues are offering, especially LIV. "New Normal" hits the golf world....
Regarding your talk about money earnings - before the FedEx Cup thing, money earnings were _the_ measurement for how well the players did on the PGA Tour. I remember seeing lists of PGA money leaders printed in the newspapers (Nicklaus was often first on the lists that I recall). I guess the PGA and presumably the Euro Tour decided to downplay earnings a couple of decades ago.
Rick's brain about de RUclips Ryder Cup question "don't say Mark Crossfield, don't say Mark Crossfield, don't say Mark Crossfield, don't say Mark Crossfield, don't say Mark Crossfield, don't say Mark Crossfield, don't say Mark Crossfield, don't say Mark Crossfield, don't say Mark Crossfield, don't say Mark Crossfield, don't say Mark Crossfield..."
Thanks again for your great work and entertainment, Rick, Guy, and staff. I feel like a very fun and competitive team, would be Rick, Peter Finch, Matt Fryer, Andy Carter, Liam (from Golf Mates), and Mark Crossfield. Vs Good Good golf. That would be a great time, for all your fans.
@@gregbarthjr9621 yeah that's all good. I wasn't having a crack at you. Honestly, if those other youtubers have gone out of their way to bad mouth others, they deserve a negative wrap themselves. I believe Crossfield had something along the lines of referring to Rick as 'those youtubers who rely on clickbait and gimmicks such as 'how far can a piece of Salmon drive a ball?'. It was aimed at Rick.
I was gonna cancel my sky golf subscription because I wasn’t watching it as much as normal (life commitments etc) but getting all the top players in the same events will make me tune more often. Also give the middle and ‘lesser’ players chance to do well and earn more money on the other events.
In regards to the LiV segment I think the point which Rick was discussing about he’s bang on. when did competing just become purely amount money? Golf is in a really bizarre place where it’s never been at such a height of power yet at a crossroads into what it will become for the future
Rick hit it on spot. The Saudi moneys killing the game. The moneys making it not interesting and honestly, I hope the few that sell out can never join the tour again when LIV shuts down.
How has money made things less interesting for you? Golf money is peas compared to some other sports that are far more popular today than golf. I will say since the split golf has become less interesting. I find both tours unwatchable. I've only watched the two majors since the split.
Loved this episode... I am in complete agreement with you in regards to your comments and how people's perceptions can change when the all the conversations of a sport turns to money. I grew up in the Chicago area in the "Jordan era" and I couldn't have loved a sport more than basketball at the time. but now that things have changed in the NBA and NFL to turn more into money over the love of the game is sad. The topic never came up in Golf because they aren't on a "Team" that they may leave for more money or trophies, but now it's starting to turn that way.
Agree with Rick - completely fed up of listening to this saga and hate the “drama” that Guy seems to love! Also hate the obsession the media have with prizes. It’s embarrassing and off putting that this divorce is being aired all over the media. If players make a decision they should be allowed to and not mentioned again.
They can. The problem going on is they want to be able to play both sides at the same time. If they just shoved off to LIV no one would care or see them again. But they’re trying to do that while simultaneously forcing their way back into the pga that they wanted to get away from as well.
Another great podcast. I do have one question though. I've been playing golf for a good year now I dropped from a 52 handicap to 25 now. I was thinking when would be a good time to have some new clubs fitted? I now play regular graphite shaft but have a feeling they are quite whippy. Grtz Nick
getting fitted at 25 would be nice but a waste of money, for you to lower your handicap even more will require many more changes in your grip and swing, way to early for a fitting, once you get to single digits would be the time for that
@@davesober2093 Don't worry about a fitting just yet. You're right about the regular flex shafts. Just get your current shafts replaced by stiff flex shafts.
You cant talk about Cam Smith and other Aussies to Liv without mentioning the relationship they have with Greg Norman. For years Norman has helped all the Aussies trying to make it in the US. He has supported them from the beginning of their careers and developed a very close relationship with them.
Great show again lads...one question, If the LIV golf events only accomnodate 48 players and potentially a max of 54 .... what happens to the players who are cut???
It seems that we are more used to seeing money tied with winning in golf and when LIV gives the money without the players winning first, we feel awkward about it. However, if we look at some of the other sports such as basketball or Soccer/football, players are basically paid before they produce the win. Maybe we need to change our mindset about how golf players are paid.
The issue isn't the money. No one debates that golfers are underpaid relative to other major sports. It's the only sport where someone can call themselves a "professional" but not actually make any money. That needs reform. The issue with LIV is the SOURCE of the money. Cameron Smith is an employee of Mohammed bin Salman. Also, LIV offers a fundamentally uncompelling product played on B-tier courses.
@@Trevenclaw Yet they had no qualms about going to China, DP World Tour has no problems with the UAE. There was even an event in Saudi Arabia a few years ago. It has nothing to do with where the money is coming from but the perceived threat LIV is posing to the established order.
I completely agree with them talking about money WAY more. They even talked about how the everyone in the field was going to make 500k. And they showed many graphs about the winning between the top 10 and of the ties that would happen and the money they would earn
Watching this down in Aus, massive fan of all Aus/NZ golfers but i honestly do believe that C.Smith signed for LIV with there being a commitment to play an event in AUS. He is very much an Aussie to the extent that this year he is coming to play in some Australian events that aren’t affiliated with either the PGA or DP world tour. Just an extra thought to the discussion with C.SMITH and LIV.
I have a feeling the virtual league will have some decent interest at first. But will flame out fairly quickly. Yes, sims are getting very good. But there’s a massive difference between watching sim golf and playing sim golf. Just look at the good good videos they do on a sim. Significantly less views than their on-course content.
Ill go the opposite way, esports is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the past 10 years. More significantly in the last 5. A tech infused new golf league will bring in so many new, younger, fans that don't otherwise watch golf right now. If it runs in parallel to the tour it will never replace real golf, just pop up as a faster paced "more fun" option for golf fans as well as a way to introduce new fans. I think the "golden format" to bring in new younger fans is actually basically what Good Good have been able to do and what some pros (Bryson for example) are adopting in their free time. Higher energy, fun, unique match ideas but maintaining a respectful and mature attitude to tie into current golf culture. Its reaching a section of the population that "traditional" golf tournaments on TV will never touch. Same idea that some people love sports but can't watch baseball or soccer. If you know the sport you don't mind watching the slower matches because you understand what's going on. But to an outsider, its just slow and boring with nothing happening.
hey rick, "golf connections" suggest to the pga should have is a nation league 5 to 7 players per nation, play match play against each other, similar to the world cup of cricket, coloured shirts, etc played over the year like football with finals and grand finals
Need your comments on the free drop Rory got on 18th hole in 4th round! On second drop the ball settled but he picked it up and was allowed to place it!
Interesting points around tech. It's changed SO much in the last few years, but I'd add that this type of event being 16 months away or so I'd not be surprised if the PGA, TW, and Rory actually put some serious investment into pushing the technology forward. By itself, it may create a leap forward for everyone. I'm willing to bet that we'll see some amazing things that'll trickle down to teachers and simulators by end of 2024.
Rick help me out on these Majors .does it not mean that anyone with a handicap registered can apply to qualify in any open contest anywhere in the world That would also apply to LIV golfers to apply in any Open golf game in the world
RICK-"LIV talks about money too much, and they aren't playing a real tournament ", Also RICK-" I love the idea of golfers playing simulated golf for huge money!"
Yes, LIV have done nothing wrong. The PGA Tour didn't invent golf, and even if they did, it wouldn't matter. People are entitled to set up other series. LIV deliberately doesn't clash with big events and I'll be honest, I enjoy their tournaments much more than the rank and file PGA Tournaments. And now suddenly Jay has found a load of money behind his sofa to make the prize money more comparable to LIV! What a coincidence 🙂
Isn’t there a putting Matt that exists already that you can create contours etc? Think it’s the zen green or something. Sky sports have it for the open coverage I’m sure
Interesting listening to both opinions about the money aspect and Rick's concerns about the future. I agree. The PGAT have been 'as bad' about promoting the money aspect of winning their tournaments, whilst being critical of LIV for the same. Both tours should be able to coexist. What existed before PGAT, DPWT etc, where did they play and who were they responsible to? Why should PGAT and DPWT (to a lesser extent) make world golf decisions?
This is an amazing concept but I don’t know how practical the idea is due to space. Swift doesn’t take much space where as all golf sims take up a room. You’re right in saying it would be fantastic for golf
@@Noticing_Nolan there aren’t tons of simulators that are realistic purchases for the demographic that would enable golf to “explode” as he put it. Plus all sims need a dedicated room which again that demographic probably can’t spare for a golf simulator
@@Noticing_Nolan aside from the fact you need to buy a golf sim you also need a dedicated room. Which is something you don’t have if you can’t even afford the sim in the first place. Address that.
The problem the PGA Tour need to realise is that what’s best for the PGA Tour may not be what’s best for golf in America. In Australia, our national tournaments (Nov-Dec) have had the quality of fields decimated since the PGA Tour implemented the wrap-around season. They really need to think how they can get the top players playing in tournaments that matter outside of the USA more consistently.

Let’s go!
James Robinson is a shoe in for the Ryder Cup Team against Good Good. Ricks secret weapon 🏹
The PGA tour needed their Commissioner’s lap dog to win the FedEx Cup to save face.
Alex Etches, James Robbo, Danny Maude, James Wiltshire, Michael Newton too!
I hope I can rep USA in that RUclips Ryder Cup some day! Great episode you guys!!!
OH YES PLEASE CHALLENGE GOOD GOOD LIKE THAT!
Today for me was one of the best. Though I have a question,
How the hell did Guy keep a jumper on for an hour???????
Thanks again for your great work and entertainment, Rick, Guy, and staff.
I feel like a very fun and competitive team, would be Rick, Peter Finch, Matt Fryer, Andy Carter, Liam (from Golf Mates), and Mark Crossfield. Vs Good Good golf. That would be a great time, for all your fans.
Mark Crossfield will never be in that crew.
He fired shots earlier on in Rick's career
I did not know this. I'd still be curious if they had ever made peace?
@@gregbarthjr9621 meh. Crossfield is almost as boring as Neil Tappin.... Almost
I'm not here to bash other RUclipsrs. I really didn't know that Crossfield and Shiels had beef.
Just dropped within last hour Smith Leishman Neimann HV111 +2 joined LIV
Discarded never to be seen again
Coming to a club near you to be the PGA pro. Or maybe driving the ball collector on the driving range.
@@Dreyno hahahaha, good one
Here is my bit on the TGL: bring in regular people to be on the team with pros! 😂
Rick needs to show his full support for golfbidder by getting a golfbidder tattoo
Yeah I think your exactly right. People will watch at first out of curiosity, but I can't see it lasting. Too gimmicky
Barry, absolute gold!!
haha
hey rick, "golf connections" suggest to the pga should have is a nation league 5 to 7 players per nation, play match play against each other, similar to the world cup of cricket, coloured shirts, etc played over the year like football with finals and grand finals
Need your comments on the free drop Rory got on 18th hole in 4th round! On second drop the ball settled but he picked it up and was allowed to place it!
What ball was it? Spalding. I’m cracking up!
Rick help me out on these Majors .does it not mean that anyone with a handicap registered can apply to qualify in any open contest anywhere in the world That would also apply to LIV golfers to apply in any Open golf game in the world
RICK-"LIV talks about money too much, and they aren't playing a real tournament ",
Also RICK-" I love the idea of golfers playing simulated golf for huge money!"
'I love the idea' just after the email he gets from Tiger... failed golfer now gets income from endorsements and now produces podcasts
I personally would rather watch outdoor golf rather than simulator golf.
Hooray, Golfbidder. Farm out. 👏❤️
Rick - which cruise ship were you on, it wasn't celebrity silhouette was it?
I don't mind tbh I liked bubbies virtual tournament videos. Would live seeing rick do some of those
Richard hammond!! No effin way thats gonna be sick
If they can only have 48 players in a LIV event what happens to the players who can't play because they keep signing more high profile players?
they can go back to other tours eg asia
Guy brought a real attitude today lol
James Robbinson on the Ryder Cup team!!
I honestly think the money thing only was focused on since the liv league was introduced
that was always the situation, and why the best players from around the world aimed for the PGA.
now there is some competition
Isn’t there a putting Matt that exists already that you can create contours etc? Think it’s the zen green or something. Sky sports have it for the open coverage I’m sure
Maureen is going to get it tonight 😂😂😂
Interesting listening to both opinions about the money aspect and Rick's concerns about the future. I agree. The PGAT have been 'as bad' about promoting the money aspect of winning their tournaments, whilst being critical of LIV for the same. Both tours should be able to coexist. What existed before PGAT, DPWT etc, where did they play and who were they responsible to? Why should PGAT and DPWT (to a lesser extent) make world golf decisions?
"Tiger and Rory are making a new Tech centered golf league called the TGL, I think it's called the Tiger Golf League"
Golf would explode if someone could figure out how to make a golf version of Zwift.
This is an amazing concept but I don’t know how practical the idea is due to space. Swift doesn’t take much space where as all golf sims take up a room.
You’re right in saying it would be fantastic for golf
There are tons of simulators mate. Unless you mean that it would explode if they could come up with a cheaper simulator so more people could own one.
@@Noticing_Nolan there aren’t tons of simulators that are realistic purchases for the demographic that would enable golf to “explode” as he put it. Plus all sims need a dedicated room which again that demographic probably can’t spare for a golf simulator
@@deterrentdubz9116 Yeah my comment already addressed that reality. Sims are too expensive for individuals... Duh
