Nice to see a video on youtube of someone trying to get a clean jazz tone from the HX stomp! I've been working at it for a while too. Mostly using either the US Double Nrm or the Jazz Rivet models. I was using ownhammer IR's for a long time but have come back to the stock cabs. They always souded wrong to me untill I started using the high cut on the cab block at around 3-4K and adding early reflections. Now I love the stock cabs! I do love the ownhammer oversize 2x12 Bogner IR though! Thanks for sharing Carl!
Yeah those high cuts definitely make a big difference! Sometimes I use an additional high cut around 6-7k.. It seems the filters in the cab block have quite a shallow slope, but in the EQ blocks they are steeper. I'll check out your tip on using the stock cabs with early reflections!
@@carlmmusic yeah I have noticed the eq block sounds drastically different to the cab block high/low cut. It would be great if line 6 published some detailed specs on these blocks so we could match the response of a speaker a bit easier. I've also noticed that my patches sound pretty different in a qsc k10 or k12 at gig volume compared to headphones at practice volume. Have you experienced a similar thing? I just keep trying to dial out boominess and/or harshness while retaining fullness. It's a delicate balance and I'm probably spending too much 6 time tweaking settings!
I've been listening since the inner urge jam video (10 yrs?) ago. I wish you would put up more of these random improvised lines. The sound reminds me of seeing Kurt at the vanguard in summer of 2000, except w/ smoother legato.
Thank you for the video. It was interesting and educational watching you work the controls to try to achieve that "polytone" sound. Just one question: why not just buy a Polytone amp or a Henriksen? The older I get the more I am drawn to simplicity. I love the Henriksen 10. Best 2nd to a Polytone. All of the great jazz players of yesterday just play mostly flat with a high cut and (sometimes) a light reverb, if any. I say find your (Poly)tone and stay with it. I think that is the best recipe for happiness. Best wishes to everyone.
Is is possible to get the effect you are looking for with a compressor rather than a distortion patch? I don't care to hear any of that crackling distortion for my jazz patches. A little soft overdrive maybe, but not distortion for me.
Thanks, I just got my HX Stomp so this was a good way to get into importing IRs, and exploring EQ. I did find I was getting more distortion from the distortion block, and I was wondering if you run your guitar volume at full. I tested it with a couple of Ibanez archtops that both have Super 58s, and mainly ended up just cleaning and drying it up slightly.
I often back the volume off a little, maybe 8 or 7.5.. I find it also darkens the tone in a nice way when using an amp, but not so much with the modellers. I don't know why, but perhaps its something dynamically that happens with real speakers as opposed to a static IR where when you turn the volume down its just quieter but not tonally different.
I’m Guido from Italy. I love this tone. Very good sound. Thanks for mention a Polytone IR , I’m searching it for a long time. Have you published your preset ? Have a good music!
I love that tone... I was wondering to what extent the pick ups are important. Especially, i'm thinking about buying a Eastman 64T with P-90s. Is it possible to reach this tone with this kind of pick ups?
is the 3.5 update any good to work without a IR in this kind of a setting? beautiful tone carl! i tried this but too much distortion when i did the classic distortion block even dimed down to near 0. i went with a OD block instead. but i still cant get the dimension you get here. it definitely has to be the IR!
I'm really enjoying the new 3.5 update.. The new cabinets are amazing and the different mic placements are a game changer. I was just recording on a track tonight at home with one of the stock cabs, wasn't quite sitting right in the mix, so I set the mic placement a little further out towards the edge and suddenly everything came into focus! I've more or less ditched any 3rd part IR's I was using.
Excellent, I love your sound :o) what are your settings on your Jazzamp Henriksen and your El Capistan because I have exactly the same configuration as you ~ Thanks for that ;o)
Henriksen is basically flat, though i've been experimenting with the EQ a little more recently.. El Cap is no tape modulation and just a little of the 'tape age' taking the edge off of the pristine highs.. Probably too fancy a pedal for my basic delay needs but I like to get into some crazy delay repeats occasionally!
@@carlmmusic also, the guitar sounds full with an interesting acoustic feel. What cabinets do you use or what's the 'secret' of that sound, beside the helix? It sounds like a good external mic in front of the amp!
9A on the Helix stomp is the JC120 and that works fine for me. A lot of people get hung up on tone they go out buy a hoard of guitars and spend the rest of life tweaking the computer or the sound effect unit and they neither have originality or any time to actually go out and do a gig. By the time one has set up the computer and fiddled with the effects all the fun of creating something new and original has gone out of the window. Most folk who go to a gig dont give a fig about the amp or guitar or even the tone all they want to hear is the music.
My Henriksen Jazzamp doesn't have an effects loop so yes! The idea was to approximate my normal recorded jazz tone, so any Stereo reverbs/delays after the amp were forbidden :)
I wasn't sure what the end result would be; so, I just skipped to the end to hear that awful synthetic-polyester fx tone. I don't know what I missed. And, no, the final tone wasn't usable.
Finally a demo where the guitarist can actually play something other than the pentatonic scale!
Thank you. I repeated the same thing and got exactly the same sound on my stratocaster with single on neck.

I have a Henriksen Jazzamp and agree with you! But for recording its interesting to see if you can get similar results using a modeller.
Really nice tone!
Can you share the patch? Thank you!
