IR vs Speaker Cabinet
Просмотров 5192 года назад
May not be the most scientific test but was something I just wanted to do for myself to test the viability of recording using IR's. The signal chain is somewhat strange but looks like this: Guitar Rat Delay Reverb looper then HX Stomp 'Princess' Model (with preamp and poweramp)... Then either into a Henriksen Jazz Amp class D amplifier into a 1x10 eminence speaker into sm57, or in the case of t...

Modern Jazz Tone with a Line 6 HX Stomp

Modern Jazz Tone with a Line 6 HX Stomp
Thank you for the video. It was interesting and educational watching you work the controls to try to achieve that "polytone" sound. Just one question: why not just buy a Polytone amp or a Henriksen? The older I get the more I am drawn to simplicity. I love the Henriksen 10. Best 2nd to a Polytone. All of the great jazz players of yesterday just play mostly flat with a high cut and (sometimes) a light reverb, if any. I say find your (Poly)tone and stay with it. I think that is the best recipe for happiness. Best wishes to everyone.
I have a Henriksen Jazzamp and agree with you! But for recording its interesting to see if you can get similar results using a modeller.
Yes yes yes
Just came across this. The performance and the tone took my breath away.
Thank you for this video. This may be a silly question, but with the ii, V, i (D Minor 6/9 being the i), you suggest D melodic minor for the D 6/9, G melodic minor for the E minor7b5 and Bb melodic minor for the A7b9. The only thing is: you only have one measure to squeeze in G melodic minor to Bb melodic minor for that ii-V. In that short a time (one measure/ two beats each chord), is it even possible to play a melodic minor phrase in two different keys in that short a time?
Hi John, thanks for your comment! It's definitely possible, I would suggest writing a few licks over ii,v, I's (in this case minor). Then you could try transposing those licks into 1 or 2 other keys. I've had students who by doing this really felt they started to grasp the concept!
@@carlmmusic hey yes I did start to do that already: write it out specifically. It is more work, but it will definitely help me learn it better than just blowing over those 3 chords with those arpeggios.
amazing.
Beautiful 🎉

where did you get the polytone ir?
Thanks, I just got my HX Stomp so this was a good way to get into importing IRs, and exploring EQ. I did find I was getting more distortion from the distortion block, and I was wondering if you run your guitar volume at full. I tested it with a couple of Ibanez archtops that both have Super 58s, and mainly ended up just cleaning and drying it up slightly.
I often back the volume off a little, maybe 8 or 7.5.. I find it also darkens the tone in a nice way when using an amp, but not so much with the modellers. I don't know why, but perhaps its something dynamically that happens with real speakers as opposed to a static IR where when you turn the volume down its just quieter but not tonally different.
Is is possible to get the effect you are looking for with a compressor rather than a distortion patch? I don't care to hear any of that crackling distortion for my jazz patches. A little soft overdrive maybe, but not distortion for me.
Thank you. I repeated the same thing and got exactly the same sound on my stratocaster with single on neck.
thats a beautiful sounding axe Carl...
Great! Reminds me of The Elder Scrolls theme, beautiful
Sounds great just what I’ve been looking for
One of the best versions of this tune out there. Amazing stuff.
Mannnnn so beatifull playing !!
✨😍✨😍✨😍✨😍✨😍✨
is the 3.5 update any good to work without a IR in this kind of a setting? beautiful tone carl! i tried this but too much distortion when i did the classic distortion block even dimed down to near 0. i went with a OD block instead. but i still cant get the dimension you get here. it definitely has to be the IR!
I'm really enjoying the new 3.5 update.. The new cabinets are amazing and the different mic placements are a game changer. I was just recording on a track tonight at home with one of the stock cabs, wasn't quite sitting right in the mix, so I set the mic placement a little further out towards the edge and suddenly everything came into focus! I've more or less ditched any 3rd part IR's I was using.
@@carlmmusic will you be doing a another tone video with stock cabs anytime on here? I'd really appreciate it!
Love the sound, bright and warm, wich strings were you using?
Several questions : What model is ?, It´s plugged ? , How do you set the strings action ? By the way , the tone is just beautiful . Thanks!
I’m Guido from Italy. I love this tone. Very good sound. Thanks for mention a Polytone IR , I’m searching it for a long time. Have you published your preset ? Have a good music!
cool!
Beautiful!
Those Eastman are very pristine sounding.
I love that tone... I was wondering to what extent the pick ups are important. Especially, i'm thinking about buying a Eastman 64T with P-90s. Is it possible to reach this tone with this kind of pick ups?
Carl! Fantastic. What is your setup here?
Thanks Dixon! I bought a little 1 watt class A tube amp called the Palmer Eins. Plenty loud enough for the living room! Apart from that a little bit of Rat>Delay>Verb..
@@carlmmusic Sounding so good brother
Amazing!
just beautiful, thank you
Beautiful
The solo on It could happen to you was amazing
great! what guitar and pickups you use?
Thanks! It's a Squier Classic Vibe with Suhr pickups
Hearing a Wayne Krantz vibe. Dig it!
Totally! The drumming also reminds my of Keith Carlock. Sounds awesome! :)
Thanks, i've learned a lot. Good Vid !
Love this tune Carl……
Why did you remove ur video of "The song is you"?, I love it and I'd like to listen it again
Lovely playing. And great sounding guitar!
I wasn't sure what the end result would be; so, I just skipped to the end to hear that awful synthetic-polyester fx tone. I don't know what I missed. And, no, the final tone wasn't usable.
9A on the Helix stomp is the JC120 and that works fine for me. A lot of people get hung up on tone they go out buy a hoard of guitars and spend the rest of life tweaking the computer or the sound effect unit and they neither have originality or any time to actually go out and do a gig. By the time one has set up the computer and fiddled with the effects all the fun of creating something new and original has gone out of the window. Most folk who go to a gig dont give a fig about the amp or guitar or even the tone all they want to hear is the music.
very nice jazz session... this guitar seems to have a nice playability and response!... 👍🌈
This is just stunning
