Nothing is more fun than being a tiefling wizard/warlock, casting a fire spell that hits everything in the room including yourself and having your racial resistance to fire trigger nullifying most if not all of the damage to you.
It always sets up an extremely thematic moment, picturing a magic demon being causing this huge explosion and then walking through the residual fires like its just a particularly hot afternoon.

A tiefling build I recently came up with: Battlemaster fighter with sentinel feat. Once your enemy comes into your range, they are doomed because you have a reaction for every possibility.
Trys to run --> gets hit and speed reduces to zero, so no running away (Sentinel)
Attacks someone else --> gets hit (Sentinel)
Attacks me and miss --> gets hit (Battlemaster with riposte maneuver)
Attacks me and hits --> gets exploded (Hellish rebuke from Tiefling racial ability)

    • @2MeterLP
      @2MeterLP 5 лет назад +2

Havent played it yet, but battlemaster fighter is a good class in general.
I came up with it while thinking about ways to maximize the times I can hit an enemy. And hitting more is always good.
Edit: Technically I threw in 3 levels of monk multiclass as well so I can punch twice as a bonus action and trip my enemys, but that isnt really neccessary.

Actually, tieflings can happen from a wide variety of things tied to Lower Planes - sometimes even conceiving a child on it is enough for it to be born as a tiefling, which leads to tiefling traits that reflect the plane and layer of their origin, not their parent. But my most favorite tieflings are the Pathfinder's Motherless - tainted by qlippoth (obyrith demons in D&D speak, like Sibriex from MToF), they are nauseating amalgamations of man and horrid, primordial monster from before dawn of mortalkind. They are called "the Motherless" for one simple reason - no woman survives their birth, as they claw their way out of the womb, driven by instinct of an antideluvian, bestial, but simultaneously intelligent beyond mortal comprehension fiend. Does not make them bad folks, though, even if understandably sad.

I love how vastly different their appearances can be; it makes it so much fun to create and draw tieflings. They all have different horns and I gave their tales different shaped tips and the rogue's is prehensile as hell and ahfjdbskshdbd they're just the best, so much fun. I wanna create one that's triton-based, he'd be kind of a merman-tiefling... A merfling...

    Hi,
I have recently got back into DM'ing after a very long break. (1st ed to 5th, phew !). I have been binge watching your videos, and cannot thank you enough! You really have helped me transition and bring myself up to date. Through your history lessons I have been able to cement my campaign setting into my players previous experiences and the games they have played in the 5e version. I knew nothing of the Forgotten Realms or Faerun setting and was a little scarred that my lack of understanding of those settings would be too jarring and unsettling for them.
With your help I can now weave things together and make the new new campaign fit into their previous adventures.
    Thanks so much.

My first character was a Tiefling Circle of the Forest Druid (Born with Cloven hooves and his Horns turned into Antlers, either due to genetics or due to being raised on Druidic Magic) who was raised by a Tabaxi and Bronze Dragonborn and sheltered from the fact that Tiefling are outcasts (Or that he was Even a Tiefling). Made for a Fun aspect since a lot of people ran into him and were like "Wait, a druid? That's unusual for a Tiefling" And he's just sort of "It is? I'll keep that in mind if I ever meet a Tiefling Druid." And be just 100% clueless because he lived in the freaking woods his entire life up until he got sent out because his "masters" realized he needed some real life experience dealing with people since he was easily taken advantage of by wanderers.

To build on this episode's fine expose on Faerunian tiefling lore, let's talk briefly about their wider lore:
Tieflings first debuted in the Planescape setting, being one of the three new PC races introduced in the campaign setting boxed set, alongside the Bariaur and the Githzerai.
Though the fluff of tieflings being hyper-mutable mutts of the Lower Planes existed from the start, mechanical support for this didn't come until the Complete Planewalker's Handbook, released two years later; this provided D100 tables of variant racial traits and possible appearance traits. This book also introduced the tieflings' counterparts, the Aasimar and the Genasi; Aasimar did not get a similar "appearance table" until the obscure Warriors of Heaven splatbook, whilst Genasi never got one at all, to my knowledge.
After Sigil, the Forgotten Realms is home to the largest official population of fiend-blooded tieflings, due to the myriad evil mages, dark magocracies, fiend-cults and fiendish invasions the world has experienced over countless centuries. Faerun is even home to five distinct tiefling subraces; Durzagons (duergar/barbazu tieflings), Worghests (barghest/goblin tieflings), Baphitaurs (Baphomet-blooded minotaur tieflings), Tanarukks (orc tieflings) and Fey'ri (elf tieflings).
The artwork for tieflings changed in the early 2010s with the release of 4th edition; there are multiple reasons for this, as discussed in Wizards Presents: Races & Classes, but the main drive was for a more coherent art-style and a race that would be more easily distinguished by casual viewers. Plus, most pre-4e tiefling art fell into the "horns, tail, hooves, or any combination thereof" camp anyway.
The Nentir Vale setting, core setting of D&D 4e, is the third setting with a canonical major tiefling presence. In 4e, tieflings descend from a human empire called Bael Turath, which sought to avert its waning power through elaborate infernal pacts with Asmodeus and the archdevils of Baator, transforming all Turathans into a fiendish version of themselves. There is a still a certain level of mutability in Nentir Vale tieflings, but it's based more on soul-pacts rather than physical mutations. The Broken Mirror lineage, for example, are walking beacons of bad luck. The Blightseer lineage sees visions of ruin and entropy, which they can use to age and wither whatever they look at. Bloodcrowned Courtiers have the ability to transform into monstrous versions of themselves in battle. When Bael Turath fell, the tieflings scattered across the world, and whilst there is still a certain level of distrust, this happened so long ago that there is no concerted active prejudice against them.

The random star wars picture just sidetracked this whole video for me. lol 3:01 if your wondering. its a picture of 4 jedi falling into darkness and discovering Korriban. i forget exactly who they are save that 1 of them is Ajunta Pall. one of the original dark lords of the sith and founder of the Sith Empire. Similarities between Sith (species) and Tieflings are uncanny. later depictions would lose the horns and it would be common to have tendrils hanging off their face. I am a huge lore nerd for many settings and Dungeons and Dragons is the new setting im starting to get into and was curious about the tiefling lore. i think i expected more of an oblivion scenario where the hells attempted to invade the sword coast or something and was pushed back and the tieflings are a race descended from the frontline pawns caught on the other side when the gates to the hells were closed. essentially making them descendants of daemonic peasants and footsoldiers of hell. the actual lore isnt bad. just didnt meet expectations i guess. lol granted im still very new to D&D stuff so there may be something im failing to notice or some deeper stuff i havent got to yet that will change my thoughts. =)

There's a greek-like DnD setting where tieflings were rare and the result of a powerful spellcaster making a pact with fiendish beings. My tiefling paladin was the result of his father making a deal go strike a blow against a rival house. Rival house had made a deal with the same being to destroy my paladin's family. Being did it by stalling the conception until the birth would line up on a night that meant bad omens. Add onto his mother not being able to survive the birth, it became a crap show that had my tiefling paladin being given to the brother of a house guard as an alternative to having him drowned like his brother's wanted. Really sad the campaign stalled because it was hinted that his quest would give him answers concerning his family.

how do you feel about the tiefling lore that they are the result of a broken pact between a warlock and their (edit) devilish patron? since this can happen at any time this creates new unique tiefling bloodlines and plays up the "cursed" part of their heritage. also, are you of the opinion that the tiefling racial traits are dominant in the children of a tiefling/(other) union, creating essentially another tiefling despite their other parent, or so you think it's more of a half-elf situation where the traits of the tiefling parent are mixed and in the case of further intermarriage could be made inconsequential? (a 1/8th tiefling would be almost indistinguishable from another race) this scenario is why i personally prefer the "curse" interpretation of their bloodlines, because the person who made/broke the pact is cursed to be a (edit) devil themselves and all their children will bear the same curse. your great great great grandfather was a human man who made a deal with the devil? bam! he's transformed into a tiefling and then he had a tiefling child, who had a tiefling child, who... (etc). this may also add to races distrusting or not being interested in tieflings for partners because they're guaranteed to have a tiefling child which in the eyes of some snobbier races would cloud their bloodline. on a continuing note from the business of pacts, i think a descendant of the original warlock in their family who broke the pact could potentially seek out the (edit) devil that their ancestor wronged and complete the deal to remove the curse, but since most deals happened centuries and centuries back, this is more of a wild goose chase, cementing tieflings as a permanent race in the forgotten realms. i love tieflings!

"The children born to tieflings after that rite were devil-born. The true-breeding scions of Asmodeus. A hundred years ago, a body might have a little devil blood, and mixing with the right mortals would thin it out. Mortals don't breed straight down, after all. Not even with fiendish blood in them. Now a dozen generations could go by, but the result will be the same.
"Mortals don't breed straight down - but tieflings, ah tieflings were the exception. Tieflings didn't mix, didn't dilute. A human and an elf might beget a half-elf, but no matter who laid down with a tiefling - human, elf, orc - the result was another tiefling."
This is a quote from Brimstone Angels: Lesser Evils. There's more to it if you're interested, but the gist is that tieflings from the Asmodeus line created by the Toril Thirteen (i.e., _all_ tieflings whose bloodline existed prior to the Spellplague, plus maybe some more) always beget other tieflings. Tieflings from _other_ bloodlines might work that way, but more often they'll gradually thin out, with the curse skipping generations or fading away entirely.
As a side note, in your comment you repeatedly referred to "their demonic patron" or similar. And sure, tieflings can be of a demonic bloodline. But this is the exception rather than the norm. The vast majority of tieflings are of _devilish_ bloodlines. Asmodean tieflings are obviously by far the majority of all tieflings, but even if you exclude that, it makes more sense for the majority to be infernal, rather than abyssal. Demons aren't the sort to go around making pacts and scheming and sleeping with mortals. That's far more of a devilish thing to do.

Jim Cullen thanks for your reply! you’re quite right, i got demonic and devilish mixed up! my point with that being the question of if it is canon or not that tieflings can be born not only as an original descendant of asmodeus a la the toril thirteen, but if the curse would be applied as a result of messing with devilish power and getting your bloodline cursed as a result. i quite certainly recall reading this years ago as a source of new tiefling bloodlines, but it’s possible i’m getting editions or game systems mixed up.

I made a tiefling barbarian, lol. I'm new to d&d and this is my first character. My GM let me not even be bulky like most barbarians and lets my strength come from the rage and demonic influences. I have a pretty good background to explain the choice of barbarian for my tiefling and it works well in my opinion. So almost every fight you see this smallish pink tiefling charge in headfirst followed by a rogue, the rest of the party is ranged so i'm the only visible melee.

The most (in)famous Tiefling is probably Venger, the bad guy from the 80s D & D cartoon.
Well, technically his backstory means he is not a "true" Tiefling, since he was actually a human who was magically transformed and doesn't have the bloodline, but his appearance most closely corresponds to that character type.
Point is, do videos on the old cartoon -_-

    • @Jorphdan
      @Jorphdan  5 лет назад +4

a Tiefling has a further back racial history. Their great grandfather might have been a Cambion. Cambions are half devils, the result of breeding with a devil. They are almost always evil, unlike tieflings. I guess it's just how far back the fiendish touch goes which results in the difference between a Cambion and a Tiefling.

    • @DoctorSciencetime

@@Jorphdan Xanathar's Guide does supply the option of having a fiendish parent. I rationalize the difference as cambions having the fiendish DNA overriding the mortal, while Tieflings strike a balance.
