Then again for a long time “Dinosaur” was a term sometimes used to refer to any prehistoric animal so he could also be talking about the countless animals killed by humans during the holocene.
The science on climate change has been around since the industrial revolution itself, but at the time it seemed like the coal and the oil would never run out and production would always increase, so why listen to quacks, right?

He was world famous, met with Thomas Jefferson while he was president, and he's the "Humboldt" that all the counties, cities, and other things are named after. I highly recommend the book "The Invention of Nature" to anybody interested in learning more about him.
