    The strawberry mayor exemplifies what I love most and hate (second) most about rdr2. It's a completely incidental mystery and curiosity that you can pick up on even if you miss that main signpost, the lost tourist. It builds the world and helps to further the feeling that it exists outside Arthur & the player. But I felt like there just wasn't a way to learn of a satisfying answer, like some other mysteries or curiosities I straight up would never know the answer to without videos like this.

    • @dirtyshinobii
      @dirtyshinobii 2 года назад +49

      I love unsolved mysteries though, it lets you come up with your own conclusion and it makes it all more mysterious

    • @karenamyx2205
      @karenamyx2205 2 года назад +63

      Miss the lost tourist? How? On my low honor playthrough, I tried ignoring him.. multiple times.. he was still there EVERY time I rode in.
      Also, I get your frustration. There are kinda a ton of little threads to follow in RDR2, that in the end, you feel like "I don't get what's going on?".
      Emerald Ranch comes to mind. The shot up saloon. Girl in the window.
      But, I'll play devils advocate for Rockstar for one sec. I think you are wanting these little mysteries to be stories, which have a beginning, middle, and end. But they arent stories. They're *ODDITIES* . The world is simply too big to fill with full fledged stories. But oddities? There can be hundreds, all over. Not mysteries to solve, just odd things to flavor you wandering through the world. And, honestly, more realistic. If you really were wandering around like this, most things weird things would probably end with "Wtf went on here?".
      Idk! My 2 cents. I do hate a mystery with no answer, but I just adore this game.

    • @Tea_Noire
      @Tea_Noire Год назад +42

      I feel like some of these "mysteries" are cut or unfinished quests. Like with the Emerald Ranch girl, there's an abandoned mail cart with a letter addressed to her from a relative that I feel like we were supposed to deliver to her and start a questline.

    The point of Strawberry is that it's a lie. They illustrate this when you get a quest to help an NPC nearby to find his way back to town, and he talks about how it was made out to be bigger and better than it was. They advertised it as a city, but it's less than half the size of Valentine. Effectively, everyone in the city are workers of the few places it has, like the hotel and general store. Even the hotel has like 2 rooms and that's it. Of course the town was designed to have a lot of flair, but flair doesn't make a town more productive.
    It reminds me of failing cities that commission graffiti all over in hopes of making the city look nicer and to try to give it some spirit, but it always fails because it doesn't change the fact that people are poor and buildings are empty and crumbling. Strawberry runs a moonshine operation, as you can see when you rob the general store. In effect, Strawberry is really just a town that is about the size of a typical ranch, where a guy wanted to play mayor, so he had a bunch of buildings built, coaxed people into coming in to work and live there, and he gets to lord over them. It's ultimately little more than a glorified convenience store for weary travelers.
    Of course the mayor would like to see it grow, but it's soo far out of the way and not between any towns, that's it's in a precarious position that will never see it grow much. So he tries to attract tourists, but there's not much to see or do there. It's a quaint little town, but there's nothing to do there but enjoy a little bit of the sights. It's about as good as going to a tiny Alaskan town for a vacation, where the people are only there for work or because their families have lived there for generations. But in the case of Strawberry, the only people that live there are the people that work at the few places it has, the people who work the moonshine stills, and whatever weary travelers and tourists happen to come across it.
    Strawberry also doesn't actually produce anything but moonshine. All the general store goods and stuff like that is shipped in, it has no farms, it doesn't even have a horse stable, so everyone must buy everything from the general store....which is obviously owned by the mayor, and they're also only paid by the mayor too. In fact, the whole town is owned by the mayor. He just had money and had everything built to look like a town, and just enough buildings to have places for the workers to live. He's not particularly evil, he just wants to play mayor like it's sim city. Of course there probably is a darker side, because of the fact that people probably do end up coming in that aren't what the mayor wants, and also refuse to go. So I'd imagine the mayor just sends some men over to kill them, and that's how Strawberry basically doesn't get taken over by outlaws.
    I'd imagine there's cut content that would have covered this, where you probably get a mission from one of the residents who says Strawberry isn't what it is, and you need to do some sleuthing and stealthing to save them. After all once someone has moved in, they'd have trouble actually leaving, considering they've got nowhere else to go. So I'd imagine the mayor actually had some secret requirements to be considered welcome in Strawberry, stuff he even required behind closed doors. So he probably would have required people to live a certain way even in the privacy of their own homes. So he'd require married couples to make love a certain way, require them to cook a certain way, required them to do all kinds of little things that he would have considered as leading a "good" life, even stuff that would seem pointless.
    I'd also imagine that since he would require this, he'd also basically have free reign in the entire town as a law, so he could go into any home he wanted whenever he wanted, to ensure people were doing everything according to what he thought was right, including how people arrange the inside of their homes, how clean they keep it, where they put things, etc. So if something was not where he thought was proper, you'd get some kind of punishment or warning. He's basically like an HOA except inside your home too. It's also clear that he would have been controlling who is allowed to marry who. So if you had two young people and he didn't think they would make for "fine breeding", they weren't allowed to marry. And if they tried, well then they'd get "justice", which was either being killed or run out of town. So in a way it would have been like a cult too.
    I think the end story of the town was supposed to be this revelation where the mayor was funding the entire town on moonshine profits, while selling this dream of goodness, even though moonshine lead to lots of problems elsewhere, funded gangs, and caused fighting and deaths, so it's ultimately this dream built on lies and debauchery. I think the ending was supposed to be the towns people learning this and turning on the mayor.

    Every mission we have in strawberry has violence and killing or destruction in the main story. First it’s Micah’s breakout than it’s hanging cleet and chasing down a bounty. There is also an illegal moonshine distillery and a man actually hiding in an outhouse so he doesn’t get his ass beat and apperantly Micah killed a girl there in the epilogue. Mayor is very good at reducing crime

    Just a game mechanics thing, I have had the Mayor repeat his pontificating from the front porch of the welcome center several times, but only once was Arthur allowed to interact with him. I'm doing a very slow play, so Micah has not been jailed or freed yet. After Arthur mugged him for the letter (he did it masked), The other Mayor speech happened the next time he visited Strawberry, and it was like the response from the Mayor (when Arthur interacted with him) made a lot more sense since he already read the letter.
