Another great video of a common type of repair, nice work Joe 🙂
However, I must offer a correction on solder types, it does matter.
You should suggest using only Rosin core solder for electronics, and never Acid core solders.
Most who watch these videos already know this, don't offer wiggle room for those who don't.
A word on alcohol cleaners, most off the shelf are from 70% to 90% isopropyl alcohol the rest is water.
Use 100% isopropyl alcohol from an electronics source, otherwise allow the water to dry before powering on.

There's no way out of assumptions, contrary to that foolish popularized idium, ifself packed-full of metaphysical assumptions, they undergird all knowledge. I would just buy a can of contact cleaner. Specifically designed for this purpose, pretty cheap and will last you forever.
Quick Tip: You can get "free" or "cheap" solder wick by taking a coax cable apart and pulling out the braided shielding to it. Just be sure the coax has copper shielding instead of aluminum shielding (ie, not cheap TV cable)

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I'll probably soak it in a bit of Flux too. That should help get the solder to soak up into the mesh.

Joe, try putting some flux (paste or liquid, doesn't matter) on that desoldering braid before heating it up. The difference will be night and day.

Thanks Joe. I have one of these capacity testers and I'm getting ready to use it to test 16 280V LiFePO4 cells. Forgetting to turn knobs off, etc., "Blowing stuff up" does happen so I appreciate this "how to fix" lesson.

Chopping the legs off of the components you remove first is best I find, IF you don't plan on reusing them. It makes removing components much quicker and easier as you only have the little legs to desolder and unstick from the PCB.
Thank you. Failed my first load tester in that exact manner. And I knew the current needed to be adjusted to zero. But I kept the blown tester to repair later. And now I have a procedure and parts reference. Gotta love RUclips.

Thanks for this video. I blew up the MOSFET on my tester once before because I monkeyed with the settings to get the watt draw higher, by just a little, and the original MOSFET popped. Found a video that suggested buying a higher quality replacement and using more and better quality heat transfer paste. Did that and I've have been rockin' ever since. Then I connected an 18 volt Ryobi battery to it after turning both knobs all the way in the WRONG direction. If not for finding your video, I wouldn't have known that that little booboo also pops the MOSFET. So I was able to use the extra parts that I bought the last time to fix this up in just a few minutes, so thanks for giving me the exact info that I needed, and in a short concise way. BTW, if you didn't know, you can change the settings on these testers and get enough amps to do a .2 C test on a 100 AH 12 volt LiFePo4 drop in battery, if you provide a small fan to help keep the temp around 65 -70 C. I've also set it on top of a couple of frozen water bottles to run the test. Stay safe.

@@AveRage_Joe Search on YT and you'll find videos that can explain how to change the "WATTS" better than I could here. You basically push the button until you get to the field you want to change and then push it 2 times to lower or 3 times to raise the value or vice versa, I don't remember. Once you've done that you hold the button until the display runs up or down to the setting you want. As you get close, you can push the button once over and over to inch up on the setting. then just wait a few seconds and it will lock in that last number. A 12 volt LiFePo4, drop-in, 12 volt, 100 AH battery takes about 280 watts (14 volts X 20 amps) for a .2c discharge test. The key is to start with the factory settings and note the temperature when you are testing at the max 180 Watts, or whatever your tester is rated at. Remember that temperature and, after raising the max watt limit (that will be in the video when you find it), just make sure you cool the board so it doesn't get above the factory original temperature limit (I have found that it will go to a somewhat higher temp without blowing the MOSFET, but do that at your own risk). You may find that all you have to do is set it in front of an A/C vent. It makes the unit much more useful on a wider range of batteries. For the record, I use one of the Ryobi 4 inch fans to provide the additional cooling.
I've had several of these...the mosfets are not protected in any way and there is no feedback loop to protect the mosfet. The gate driver is the problem. It runs to hard and has many spikes on it that exceed the gate voltage. Add a 15v zener from gate to drain to help soak up the gate spikes. When the mosfet blows it is not unusual for it to take out other things too.
Yea, mine blew up and I just don't have good luck with repair like this so I tossed it and went with iCharger X8. However, you make it looks sooooo EASY! I wonder about my choice and in any case - thanks for sharing for sure :)

Well explained. Thank you. An extra step would be to put heat paste under the MOSFET. It’s sitting on a large copper ground plane with lots of vias connecting to the other side. This would increase heat dissipation.

Please help. Mine has a different problem. The knobs are responding and its actually discharging the battery as it lowers the voltage when i turn the knobs but the ampere is always zero. Which part do you think is the culprit?

I have one just like this, except it has no knobs (tehe!), just push buttons to set things... I always leave it set at the highest (draining LTO cells) and have had no issues. I wonder how different they are?
Nice! Havent seen that model yet. If your only doing single cells then full send is ok and it wont blow. If you leave on or turn up to fast on a higher voltage battery it will blow! Thats what I did was turned it up to fast on a 48v battery and BOOOOOM!💥😆

Mine just died, I'm unsure if it's the MOSFET that's broken or not, I hit start and nothing happens. Is there a way to test the existing MOSFET to make sure before speding 1/3 of the cost of a whole new unit?
Yeah you can if you have a digital volt meter. You would set it to the diode setting and check the pins to make sure. Just look it up on google and it shows ya how and what to look for.
What to do if mosfet burns board beneath itself and copper tracks blown... any help as I got 2 of these with identical issue.
Hmmmm, Id maybe just add some copper wire for the tracks! Done that for other similar situations.

Why would you use this discharger instead of using icharger and regenerative discharge into another battery? Icharger i8 is nice, you can split 16s lfp battery in half and top balance them with it.
Yea good idea! I am building a regenerative discharge setup with my ToolkitRC M8S though due to the limited load and battery capacity of my setup I built a DiY constant voltage DC load so it will dump any unused power.
I use this while using my x6 on other cells!🤘

Forgot how to reprogram it. Looks like 1-click cycles through settings, 2 when in setting add up to the value and 3 when in setting substract to the value.
I replaced the cooler with one from a CPU, there are a few degrees difference, meaning extra gained power.

My Unit is brand new and it only goes up to 3.4A on a Single LiFePo4 Cell.. does someone know, is it broken?
I would say yes unless you are using the small usb cables or small wires. What cell you testing?
Counterfeit components are an absolute plague. I would have thought by now it would have faded away, but no.
Even if a real IRFP260N, looking at the SOA on the datasheet, 150W is up there in dissipation for a single FET! Bit of an optimistic design me thinks. Also a pretty poor design, given that it'll shred itself.
Pity you don't have a scope. It would be interesting to see what happens on the gate of the FET at startup. Probably wouldn't be too hard to modify the circuit a little to add a delay that disconnects the gate drive until the uC boots (or whatever the mechanism is that's causing the failure)
I should have known not to buy the CHEAPEST ones I could find for FIVE LOL. Yeah no scope here. Thought someone was sending me there old one but that was over a year ago. Yeah poor design if you forget to turn it down it will BLOW. Only does that on the higher voltage stuff or if you turn it up to fast and go over the 150w mark. If its a single cell its fine and you can full send or leave it on!

They should've used at least 2 to divide the load.
Yes once I've managed to get 200W on smaller TO220 package but I would do unconventional stuff like soldering that mosfet first to IHS (copper heat spreader salvaged from old CPU) with it's entire back and then having it slapped on a CPU cooler with some PC thermal paste.
At the same time when I had a larger load made using 10 of the same mosfets in parallel, I would do dumb mistake of disconnecting the load at like 40A while it's active and it would turn into a welding machine and completely melt high end gold plated 4mm banana connectors rated to 60A, but the mosfets were unharmed, because I was well within the SOA.
Do you think its possible to add more in parallel or would we need to add other stuff in order to make it work?

Measure resistance/continuity from pins in MOSFET, If it shows that it's shorted, then it's blown.
They have a design flaw, you don't have to do anything wrong to blow it up! I want to find the original manufacturer, you you know who it is?
