You wanna know the real future proofing that made me (and others) practically confirming that the cocoon was the DLC entrance? The fact that they patched in a PVE version of Varre's quest over a year after release.
After a year or so break, I did a new playthrough for the DLC, and the game tucked me in again, a lot of fun. Got my Bloodhounds Fang and Blasphemous Blade fully upgraded, and just beat Mohg tonight, hit 150, and dropped an "ahh, just getting started..., praise the Elden Ring!" message at Miquela. Just 11 days to go now.
Really good rough guideline for anybody that doesnt have so much time to prepare a new character for the DLC or just wants to get straight into it with a fresh character ! Also kinda fun run to do
One thing that I'd recommend when starting a new character, to make leveling up much less stressful, is speed running to get the Twiggy Cracked Tear for your Wonderous Physick, which stops rune loss for 3 minutes. This means that you'll almost never lose runes to dying, so you can level up much more efficiently. It can be obtained within an hour of starting a new character without fighting any major bosses (this is from memory, hopefully it's right): - get both halves of the Dectus Medallion (one half in Fort Haight in Limgrave and the other half in the fort in Northeast Caelid) - skip Stormveil (it's better done with the Twiggy Cracked Tear) by using the secret bypass to the right of the castle - make your way to the Dectus lift in Liurnia - sprint past everything in Altus straight to the Twiggy Cracked Tear (just look up the location) Then you can go through the whole game without fear of losing runes.
It was a great opportunity to play the game again. I didnt even know about the subterranean shunning grounds and the deeproot depths my first time through. Got plenty of surprises that i found my second time through and never was bored. Felt fresh again because i never touched the game after beating malenia.
I'm by no stretch an ER expert, but it took me around 6 hours to collect all the flask upgrades, beat most of the required bosses to get to those and beat Mogh at lvl 88. If we would try to grind to the recommended lvl of 150, this would've taken a bit longer. So I'm quite impressed, that you're so fast here.
Today I learned, that I don't have to run all the way up to the church of Inhibition and can get the blood for the Varre Quest from Irina instead, neat.
Thank you so much for this! I started a fresh new game plus months and months ago and forgot I needed to do certain things before DLC so now I can get that done before 6pm tomorrow, hopefully 😂
Nice vid Ain, many thx. Another quick tip. You can use the "pureblood knight`s medal" you get from varre`s questline to bail/warp out on any situation/bossfight (except dungeons). Quiet usefull for the DLC when you run into a boss with 2.5 million runes ;)
To anyone watching this Video after the DLC comes out. All you need to do is Defeat one Great Rune Boss to trigger Varre to go to the Rose Church, and it DOES NOT have to be Radahn. Ah, so I didn't need to fight Godrick at all when I went into NG+ so I can do the alternate versions of NPC quests, grab Bayle's other Heart Incant, and not mess up the NPC quests I missed.
You don't need to go to the DLC at level 10. This is meant to showcase the shortest possible route to reach Mohg for people who don't want to invest too much time into preparing a character. You can always farm runes and get to a decent level in Mohgwyn Palace or go beat the other bosses.

Eh, varre’s quest can get you in the dlc like 2-4 hours into the run for an average-everyday player, depending on their competence with certain early game bosses. In prior games, the DLCs were scaled to lategame, forcing the players to trudge through the entire games’ content to be at an adequate level for DLC. For this DLC, that shouldn’t be an issue - instead, allowing the players to comfortably experience the DLC as early as they want or as late as they want, without worrying about what level you are in the basegame. This new change will help players, who don’t have time to play games, to be able to reach and still intuitively experience the DLC as a completely separate experience to the basegame - without ever suffering from their lower Rune Level
