- Puerto Rican born star sax player performs a solo on tenor sax for Profiles in Greatness©. He has worked with Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente and the Lincoln Center Afro Carribean Jazz Orchestra.
I put this solo on when my brother passed away. It brings me peace every time I listen to it. You are a legend in my book. Thank you
This man must be all over the place in lo fi hip hop beats
Picking up the T Sax when I was in middle school has turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made in my life so far.
And that my friend, is how babies are made.
I play tenor and the thing that annoys me is that it is always the altos that get the awesome pieces when tenors sound so amaazing
I barley started playing a tenner saxophone this year and i really want to sound like this guy
HOW DO YOU SOLO LIKE THAT!!! its freaking hard to solo for me, but im a freshman still.
Ivan is probably one of the best Latin tenor players out there today.. A lot of guys talking some crazy stupid things like the 16 year saying he's way better than him LOL....
I play on a pre WWII sax made in czechoslovakia. The Tenor is so old it does not even have a serial number. It creates the most warm and rich sound i have ever heard in a sax and im very proud to own such a historical artifact!! just thought some people might find this interesting.
Yes, keep that sax, it's a gem.
Ivan is absolutely one of the most brilliant tenors on the Latin Jazz scene today.
hey men me gusta el sonido que tienes,,,,,,,,,,sigus pa lante men.,mi nombre es rafael, soy estudiante de guitarra dekl conservatorio,,,,,,,guitarra popular,,tambien estudio, saxofon, alto,,,cuidate men
okay eye am sampling the fuck outta this...hopefully you respect the art and don't sue me
It won't be the first time that Hernan Cortés got away with stealing.

Its your screen name ya dingus
+micah starr that's my real name first and last...im probably a descendent of him you dingus
SKATALITES , I WONT SAY ANYTHING ELSE
Esto es música que se escucha no con los oídos, si no con el corazón hermanos.
ivan renta ...great....tu eres un montro ......
you wish you could even afford an amazing sax like that and having a life that you could write on a piece of paper and play it in such an amazing instrument as the sax is.
Dude, I exactly what you mean. I joined the band before I knew how to read. But, I could play circles around their guitarist. I'm not talking wanking or metal either. I'm talking jazz guitar. But, it didn't mean shit to anybody because I was musically illiterate then.
I have recently started playing tenor sax (switching from alto so I already am advanced) and I was wondering what brand mouthpiece you are using. I do not know if mine is considered "good" and if I should get a different one.
@DeutschNinjaTanuki Eso depende de cada gusto, yo no me despego del tenor nunca. Sin embargo aprendi con alto es mucho mas manejable
No doubt you've a wonderful control of the horn and good phrasing.Since I consider you a great player I'd like to have your impression on my "body and soul" video.Thank you Ivan!
i hope this piece never finishes
The biggest problem is that when you have that many different musicians all playing the same instruments. No shit it's going to turn into a giant pissing contest.
So,how do I get a good tone on a tenor. I play the alto in concert and marching band. I am a freshman in high school and started in sixth grade. My band director asked me to play second tenor part for jazz band and I took a tenor home and I found it difficult to get a good tone. A lot of the time,I would go up an octave instead of the octave I wanted,so is this just an air issue?
Riffing on the Sax is the ultimate level of swag, no doubt.
@LilPres0 Same exact thing with me. The only problem is I am not farmiliar with the mouthpiece brands for tenor sax.
I thought originally watching this that transcribing this to guitar would make a great ear training exercise.. Having listened to the whole thing, I'd probably better look for something that won't lead to early onset carpal tunnel....
Very good tone. I guess I prefer the mellow sound despite how bright my sax's tone is. Especially good in the lower register. Some transitions could have been good between phrasing.
Difficult to describe such a wonderful creation!
Real music, touches the heart!

Welcome to the list of artists move me,
You BB King and John H Clarke
nice sounding sax....maybe try flipping the akg upside down it seems to get rid of the mid range bite that makes the mikes diaphram sound like its bein over loaded
@AirMover49 its not hard. You just need to create a rhythm for yourself. if its upbeat, create a faster tempo. if its blues, i'd go for a slower tempo.
yeah whatever my folks can outplay you a million times around the block... welcome to gettin judged in Detroit where playing means something..
hey, i'm not a trumpet, i play sax, and i am about to dislike the vid. He's a really good player, i can tell, but the song is boring.
What's with the mix down and hip hop BS ? This guy is AWESOME on the saxophone !! It's like the old joke... Do you know who plays this ? Then Let Him !!! Thank you Ivan for the beautiful experience :) of Our gift !
@w00tbeerisgood I thought you wrote 1920p , I was looking for that quality then I read again when I didn't find nothing, lol
People who thumbs down to this video is either they are jealous, or they dont like how he look like. but this guy is magnificent
i love my tenor sax. Sadly, its the school board's and i can't buy it. So i guess i gotta find a sax that fits my preferences.
Hey guys, SInce im a guitar player and dont know shit about Saxes, Can someone give me some info about this great wind instrument??? Looking into buying one....but there are many kinds like Alto, Tenor, soprano and baritone. I mainly want to play rock n roll and jazz of course, but with bands like Supertramp etc, and Brian Setzer Orchestra etc. What can you suggest me?? Thx..... (i already asked in my local music shops, but i think they wanna get ma money without giving me what i want :P "
@gamotousername Playing devils advocate, say you were right and the riffs aren't good. Less then 1% of people who heard this agree with you. So what then becomes truth of weather or not this is good, the consensus or your opinion. Don't state your opinion as if it were the truth. Also you don't understand context. I can put the same lines over 20 different chord progressions and make this sound completely amazing and different every time. Maybe your just not good enough to get it.
I must start by saying; Have fun. Collect visions of what you want to do with the saxophone and in music. That's my first tip.
Second: Get your hands on METHODS! Like: Use this method when practicing the scale, practice all scales using these methods. This will make you a really great saxophonist.
Third: If you can get hold of a good and inspiring teacher, then DO SO! Although you can get hold of methods yourself, a teacher can be of great help in many ways. Good luck!
True, you do, but it's important to have perspective. I started playing in 6th grade band all through high school, and I'm thankful my mommy and daddy paid for lessons, because otherwise I think I may have hated the sax if band was my only exposure. Band can be fun and all, but it's a different world. And most of the people there are just there for "RAH RAH RAH BAND!" We did have several talented musicians, but otherwise it was hard not to become a talentless band douche. As this guy did.
i dont understand other saxophonists that when they see something good, they have to kinda prove themselves by telling everyone they're little resume. saying "i play tenor 1st chair" doesnt really mean much. an individuals talent should be shown and be an unspoken understanding. When someone hears you they'll be able to tell if you're good or not. makes no sense to go around and tell people you're good.
Swab your instrument out, clean the pads of the keys and make sure your mouth piece is clean with a broek-into reed. There's probably spit left over in there from your previous sessions. My mama taught me this trick for cleaning pads that refuse to open (I had that happen a handful of times): use a dollar bill. Put the bill between pad and it's closing hole. Close key and swipe bill back and forth. Take bill out, and it works fine.
with all the negative commentary on this vid, i'm surprised none of those negavoids can name the jamaican ska song or even its specific region and time that it references. - especially particular to its breathing -- Perhaps they should just shut up and increase their library before they decide to make commentary.
This is a very great song for tenor sax to be played. Viva Skatalites!
I started playing on a tenor n i played my friends alto the other day and its more or less the same- just got 2 blow more air through the tenor to make it work but you get used to it. You can always start off on a softer reed which will make it easier- I started on a 2.5 and i'm now on a 3.5- I would reccomened the softer reed first to develop your mouth muscles and technique better first
I play the trombone but this is sick 🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼
@CoolKwstas123 If you want to just jam, and do rock and jazz, then you definitely want a tenor. But if you want to get "serious" and do some "legit", or classical playing, then alto is the way to go...but either way, the saxophone is nothing to take lightly, and will take lots of dedication and practice before anyone will WANT to hear you on it.
-good luck.
@gamotousername it's all context and around 4:30 he starts getting down and whats so awesome is that it's just a lot of the earlier riffs sped up. I'm more soul and R&B myself but I'm gonna rip off a few of thees riffs. A real musician can put the music in the background in their head and get why this is great
Tenor is the best, the alto in my opinion is waaaaay to high pitched kinda like a squished rat screaming for mercy. the bari sounds like a whale being squished and it's yelling for mercy. the tenor is just perfect. not too low. not too high. and its the best instrument for jazz
Tenor is the best.
but then again thats my personal opinion :P
and i play tenor sax
@Darkmajik666777 Tenor, totally! The alto's a nice instrument and all, but the tenor's got such a deep, rich, sound- not as "dark" and low as the bari, but not as high- pitched as the alto and the saprano sax. It's more substantial, it's got more "oomph" to it, and it's all together much, much cooler. ;)
i think what u mean is whats called a 'growl.' i myself dont kno how to do it, bcus i dont play that instrument. but i have friends who play brass instruments and they mentioned things like that to me. it might not be what ur looking for but try googling that and see what comes up. u can find anything on the internet nowadays
Looks like an unlaquered 82z to me, you can tell by the silver colored band where the neck and sax meet, the fact it only has one screw, and if you look closely you can almost see the yamaha logo on the neck's octave mechanism. He has one of the rovner ligatures with the metal plate, I love that ligature.
Why is that platez. Is it because he isn't running the scales like Kenny G. His technique sounds and looks very good. Notice how he fluidly pushes and pulls on the runs with ease. Notice how relaxed the hands/fingers are - he doesn't hardly lift a finger from the mother of pearl keys. Go practice some more u goofy fawk!
omg you are the best sax player I have ever heard Im Elcap kid I have baker street solo on sax I love playing and Im 10 but I realy want to no how you do that bautiful vibroto on the long notes Ive been trying to figure it out but I need a lot of help do you think you could tell me please please write back!
nice solo, i like it!! does anybody know which mouthpiece he's using? i'm thinking about getting a non-metal mouthpiece for my Yamaha YTS 475 (i've got an Otto Link New York 6* mouthpiece) - can anyone give me a recommendation which mouthpieces are good (perhaps Selmer Soloist E or a nice Berg Larsen!?)
thanks
Genial !
Muy bueno !
Too bad its not in 1080p upload, hard to get the real sway through... But, the Tenor is something I want in my life, after 14 years with the Alto, I see the Tenor as a new frontier that has yet to be explored, plus - the Tenor makes some really good noises when played right.
Thanks for the upload!
@BaconNation9 Thats not a reason to thumb down the vid...i liked it and play alto.
Each sax has its own territory, and i like the alto because of its cutting, high sound that is still sax like, unlike sopranos and everything above.
I think the alto is the most versatile sax.
@miketzanos11 mate i posted that comment ages ago and im still getting notifications from it LOL
listen that's the first time iv ever written that comment and actually its been the only time so i know your not a hater but srsly bro calm the fuck down its all good alright
Wow. I don't understand why you would be offering criticisms to his improvisational style. First of all, he is one of the top tenor men today and second of all, the way one improvises when completely solo is very different from the way you improvise when you're backed by a rhythm section.
i think about music a different way. its not about competition or out playing. its just about expressing your own individual emotions and your own self. spend less time trying to compete and be better than everyone and hit the books and go out and send a message to someone through your playing dude.
i am a begginer sax player but i am a musician for guitar and i was wondering what tenor sax i should buy my price rnge is up to 650 dollars but i could probably buy 700. what would anyone suggest? To clarify i need a tenor sax that is known to be good within 700 dollars
y does everyone feel the need to comment a lil autobiography of themselves...???
this guy's good tho
Nice subtone, but I would love to hear you on a old Conn 10M...now that would blow that new horn you play out the water!! I think you should really push your sound more...you have feeling, but put more passion behind your ideas...
This cat has a distended abdomen which is indicative of erectile dysfunction. So smooth as his Tenor may be, he is incapable of satisfying a woman and will probably be dead of a stroke a massive coronary within the next five years.

The "looser" was not directed at Ivan, who I think is absolutely brilliant. The "looser is directed at Ranard1 for his dumb comment below. Anyhow, Ivan I think you have great control and style! Hope to see more of your music soon!
well it all depends on you
if you're good at clarinet, it shouldn't be much of a problem, [wasn't for me]. i was top clarinet at my school, and now i'm just about the best. it just takes a little getting used to, and a love for the music.
Superb tone, great mastery of the tenor - and as far as this musical doodle goes - I love how he scribbles! Please post more.
It wouldnt be too hard if I had the sheet music to it... but I couldnt improvise something like that
Make sure you know what your doing. It takes years to master, play and develope a good tone. It's not like buying a football an saying I'm a football player.
For a romatice dinner take her to a Jazz club instead.
wow. anyone that said this was anything other than a tenor sax, obviously doesnt know what they are talking about. its obviously a tenor, look at the curve in the neck and how long it is. altos dont have the curve!
You play in a high school marching band and you're giving people discouraging advice on how to be musicians? High school marching bands are the antithesis to people who are actually striving to be good musicians.
ive played the tenor since fourth grade and i loved every minuet of it if you are thinking bout getting into music it is an amazing thing definately do it if you want to hear me play im usualy outside of yankee stadium
i started playing sax tenor about two weeks ago. And the reason why i wanted to take up the sax, was exactly what this guy is doing. Just playing solo jazz. Btw, what's the genre of this kind of music? is it jazz?
Well it all depends on the individual and how much you practice. If you of course practice and work hard then it will be Okay. Of course it'll be challenging that's what makes it even sweeter when you can play it well.
I liked it! I hope you'll give us a taste of your solo album. If you had a good guitar player by your side you could do wonders! I started comping to your playing, too bad I'm far away, I'd try to hook up with you.
Because of the larger instrument, sometimes you might need to take in a little more mouthpiece than you would on alto and loosen your embouchure to hit the notes in the lower register. Hope this helps! XP
YES!!! there both really fun... the tenor is easier to play but harder to learn... i just started playing alto and its really fun, now im into tenor, there both great instraments to play. GOOD LUCK!!
Really nice....great sound that says something...and I can believe that he is really hearing what he plays...telling me a story. Hey randomisnotgood...it's in D minor or E minor for him on the tenor.
I know. In band, (concert and jazz) All we play is middle sounds, which sound IMO dull. My band director always tells us that we need more low sounds, yet we don't play as low as I would like.
it seems to me that he is not playing... some body is playing for him... look carefull and there are several movements which don't match with the sound... however the sound is great... whoever is doing.
3:44🔥🔥🔥
Yanagisawas are ok, but if you go for an unlaquered Yamaha, like Z Custom, you'll be amazed by the sound. Yamaha is making the best sounding jazz horns in the world right now.
i personally like the vintage myself haha
like the vintage sax that Angelo Moore plays
it's awesome!! when it's all old and worn, sometimes it looks cool, they sound great too
That was baller!
I thought id just wanna listen to a minute or 2 and i'd get the idea, but it was interesting all the way through.
Great listen!
@pointzerotwofive The recordings are getting better. Watch the recent ones
i looked this up because saxaphones are the most bad ass instruments ever! i know a few people that play the saxaphone and they are the coolest people i have ever met
The sax is a beautiful instrument. I play guitar , that's what i chose to play when i was a kid but sometimes i wish i would have taken up the sax as well.
pretty good for a one-handed sax player!
note to filmmakers: how about showing more of the fingerwork?
nice audio--which is paramount--but the framing is lazy.
You mean rubber?
Most tenor players (including myself) prefer metal, and on alto it's a toss between the two - some stay away from metal and others can work it.
i guess it just depends on you for which sax is best because i cant play a yamaha it makes me sound like a beginner.hmm just depends i guess.great sound btw
man that solo was amazing, i can growl pretty well in a couple of my solos in my jazz band, but you are amzing, keep doing what you do and dont let anyone let you down
I dont get why everyone always says "I want to switch from this sax to this kind". Unless your selling one and buying a new one, cant you just play both?
i like how people try to post comments on here trying to change the way this guy plays....just listen and if you have a problem dont say anything.
He's ok, but he should relax his tonguing a little bit and take deeper breaths. Sounds like he has a good reed choice for this kind of work though.
You obviously haven't heard my band yet.
Check out some of our vids, BrianGOpoop and you'll see why most folks say I've got the best tone on youtube.
why he gotta be gay and rich for knowing how to play those instruments, i know how to play more instruments than that and im not rich
so stop hatin on him
Wow, I play the tenor too, but what bell is dat??? mines cannonball cannonballs roole!!!!!! good quality and makes other ppl jealous becuz its black yay
Hermoso me lleno el corazon...me gutaria escuchar mas de tus solo's muy hermoso te felicito....
@martincongahead uploading a HD video will also give better sound quality in youtube.
