Gloria!

    It certainly would be good to hear from any contemporaries of his as to why this man of whom I had never heard , wasn`t more well known or a world wide star. He was phenomenal ! The politics or the desire to become a star may well have not been in his genes . maybe he was satisfied to just sing wherever he was welcomed. It takes a certain kind of personality and luck to become world famous . However if I had heard of him earlier ,I would have become an instant fan!

Was he hard to get along with? I'm really scratching my head here. I don't like seeing great talent not getting it's do recognition.

    • @Operaandchant90
      @Operaandchant90 6 лет назад +6

      Some voices don't record well. The ubundant squillo that the recording equipment cant handle makes a voice like this hard to record. Also some people are just private people who don't enjoy the spotlight as much as others.
      But you're right- he should have been a superstar.

    • @ciociosan
      @ciociosan 5 лет назад +3

      There's also politics. I know for a fact that Callas refused to sing tenors Arrigo Pola (Pavarotti's teacher), and Cesare Curzi because their high notes are more beautiful and more secure than hers. It could have been the same with Lo Forese's case.

    • @shaunlee8425
      @shaunlee8425 5 лет назад +5

      Steven Burton I think it simply was being born at a time where there was so many greats like Corelli, Del Monaco , di stefano, filipeschi etc
      If one is to be picky, as good as his sound is (compared to modern singers) his sound in terms of beauty and balance plus his musicality and phrasing and size of voice is just a level below all the greats of his time .. add that to the fact that he was shorter then all of them probably shows why he didn’t really make it as big as he would say today

    • @shaunlee8425
      @shaunlee8425 5 лет назад +6

      ciociosan I don’t know if callas refused to sing with them because they had more beautiful high notes then them... sounds a little suspect considering she sang with almost every great tenor of the “golden age” including Corelli so while pola was an accomplished singer his high notes were not the most beautiful or easy of all the singers around

    • @kyleaustin7045
      @kyleaustin7045 4 года назад +7

      @@ciociosan She sang with del Monaco and Corelli, whose high notes were so solid you can build a building on them.
      So, no. That's very very wrong, to say the least.

      @kyleaustin7045 4 года назад +3

      Also, it should be noted that the MDM recordings that we see on YT have been "cleaned" of the noise, which is very much present here in Loforese's recording.
      Unfortunately, removing the noise also remove the beauty of the voice. MDM's dark, heroic voice became strange. So are Tebaldi's and Tucci's.
      There is an "uncleaned" Andrea Chenier on YT, with Del Monaco and Tebaldi, 1961 in Tokyo. Their voice are better represented in that one.

    I am not familiar with Lo Forese's voice but from this excerpt, it is clear to me that his voice is of first quality in color, size, and weight. However, to my ears, Lo Forese lacks that certain "something" that is essential to be present in all great singers. I can't specify what that "something" is. It is more a feeling that has to do with interpretive communication with the listener. One thing is certain; Lo Frese was not a run-of-the-mill tenor by any stretch of the imagination. He"'almost" made it to the top.

    • @Jeff4014
      @Jeff4014 2 года назад

      you can't specify that "something" because you don't know what you're talking about! This tenor's voice has more life than kaufmann, domingo, piotr bezcala together. Loforese does have that "something" but only experts can sense it! clearly you're not an expert like me!

    • @hashatz
      @hashatz 2 года назад +1

      @@Jeff4014 I agree with you regarding the singers you mentioned. If you are the connosuer you obviously claim to be then you know exactly what I refer to as "something" It, "something", is a visceral feeling that we all experience at one time or another; it's just there.

    • @ER1CwC
      @ER1CwC Год назад

      @@hashatz The extra ‘something’ is charisma! He had a great technique as the many videos of his singing in his 90s demonstrate. But his voice didn’t have its own unique fingerprint in the way that the voices of the other greats during his era did. That’s not something he could control, of course. I also don’t think that he was interpretively distinctive. Still, much respect to him.

      Affretando, expressivo. I hear it as an affective vocal gesture. Given Loforese's complete mastery of the trickiest sections of this aria, I assume this was a safe phrase to paint some agitation and distress.

      Il M. Lo Forese prima di cantare da tenore ha cantato con successo 11 opere da baritono, adesso, dire che dovesse cantare I Puritani con la voce spessa che possedeva mi sembra un'assudità assoluta, ha cantato il repertorio che sapeva e poteva fare, 80 opere Ugonotti compresi.
