If you were around to see any of the Leeds games at this time, you’re privileged. You saw something very special. I saw it, but only briefly, it was good enough for me. 🙂

He was years ahead in innovation, miles ahead of anyone else. The bonding techniques he used are now standard in any premier league coaching operation. When Revie started it in the early sixties - unheard of. I personally, supported Leicester but i remember watching them down at Filbert Street. They were organised and disciplined - a joy to watch. Don Revie was a trendsetter right to the very end when he accepted a job in the Arab Emirates. They slaughtered him - but look at it now. Money talked in the 1970's now it kicks, screams, and shouts it's bollox off! The hypocrites of Lancaster gate should have attended his funeral - it should have been a privilege!

This was during Leeds' wobble after they'd lost their unbeaten start to the season in 73/74. They kept their nerve just about to win the league.

What might have been. The rebuilding process had already begun when he took the England job. He was always looking at bringing players in. I don't know who did his scouting but they earned their money.

Very interesting insight into the man and that era. Peter Lorrimer said in an interview he took the England job partly out of knowing he would have to break up the backbone of the team (Hunter Cooper Bremner Giles et al) he had built. Losing 4 goals at home is devastating to anyone let alone the man who feels responsible. Yes new players were drafted in but honestly that great team was definitely in transition. They limped into the end of the 73-74 season. Maybe there was one last hurrah on the horizon (74-75) and European glory but there was also root and branch surgery required. Culling your “sons” is never pleasant.

Doesn't it just go to proove how tuned in to his lads this gaffer was that they are compleately at ease with the naked massage bit, no problems at all. I told someone once that he had been on TV massaging a players thigh and this lads meat and veg were slapping around just a couple of inchs away from revies hands. I knew 'id seen it but no one believed me.Not sure if the player was a Charlton brother but the clip was on something like "They Think It's All over".

"Stan Matthews told me to give him the ball and get out of the way and he put on an amazing exhibition." Yes he did, in that FA Cup final, and that is also why they lost to Hungary in 1953. He tried the same thing and by the end even Kenneth was begging them to pass. This is a fascinating little video. Thank you for posting. I have seen this intro used before in other videos but I did not know where it was from. I'm glad I looked. Revie had the rep for rough play but he was an innovator, popularizing an early version of the False 9 (that Hungary clobbered them with) to England as a player and coach. He had all his players watch that Hungary game.

If he wasn't the best manager of an English league football team ever - then i don't know who was or is. Don was dynamite and it's a damn shame that he didn't chronicle some of those thoughts, techniques, for posterity. The 'Revie plan' would be right up there with the best of business management worldwide.
