  • Barrow Hill Roundhouse turned 150 years old in 2020, having originated as Staveley Shed in 1870 under the Midland Railway. The shed was redesignated in 1948 as Barrow Hill Roundhouse upon nationalisation in 1948. However, the global pandemic forced a postponement on any celebrations. Two years later, the '150+2 Celebration Gala' would take place over the weekend of August 26th-28th as a belated mark of the occasion, with aims of recreating bygone memories of depot open days of the late 1970's.
As such, a variety of steam, diesel, and electric motive power would descend on the roundhouse, with many locomotives on display both out in the yard and in the roundhouse itself. A star among these, would be visiting Midland Railway 156 Class - 158A, the oldest surviving Midland Railway locomotive having first been built in 1866. This was complimented by the presence of Midland 'Compound' - 1000, with the pair rubbing shoulders on display in the roundhouse. Visiting from the Severn Valley Railway, 1500 Class - 1501 would be paired with resident Class 03 - 03066 to provide passenger services up the Springwell branch, interlaced by Class 07 - D2996 and Class 02 - D2868 working brake van rides up the branch.
The Deltic Preservation Society would open their doors to visitors during the weekend, giving members of the public a chance to see the mammoth progress that's been carried out on D9015 "Tulyar". In addition, was the chance to visit the cabs of D9015 and 55008 "The Green Howards"; the latter having just reached the end of an extensive overhaul. Pride of the Baby Deltic Project, D5910 would take centre stage on the turntable in the roundhouse, featuring in the turntable demonstrations over the course of the day.
GB Railfreight Class 69 - 69003 has been scheduled to arrive during the afternoon of the 26th, but due to late running, would arrive after the site closed for the day. 69003 would be named "The Railway Observer" during the weekend of the event.

I felt like a dog with two tails and a kid in a sweetshop!!! Now that's what you call a roundhouse, those were the days when No.1000 was everywhere, wondered where she'd got to. The yard wasn't bad either. Make note to have a few days away near here soon!!!!! Thanks Matthew👍👍👍👍

It really is a marvellous place, and one I can't recommend enough. A great array of locomotives, friendly staff, and of course the DPS shed. Glad you enjoyed the video!

    Thanks for uploading.
I loved the livery of the Midland engines and how nice to see Butler Henderson in the gorgeous GCR livery.
The loco I would really love to see restored to steam is the J17.

I went there today. It was excellent. A big crowd saw a locomotive naming and the Deltic workshops all open. Food, booze, steam, diesels, the signal box, dancing girls....

I really need to go to Barrow Hill at some point. They’ve got a lot of nice and unique locos on display. I think the J17, Butler Henderson, 158A and the Midland Compound look really nice.

Can highly recommend a visit. Best to check the events schedule though, as for things like the beer festival, some of the locos are moved outside and become difficult to photograph.

Possibly the only steam engine to have digits followed by a number. Very eccentric.

Didn't seem like much of a gala compared to some of their previous ones. 1501 was looking beautiful though, lots of nice long loud whistles, and 03099 on the back was nice too. I went there a few months ago and loved it. Seems that they've had a bit of a shuffle at the engine shed? That class 20 looks nice. Great video!

Yeah it's missing some noise, no big startups fuel prices probably. Nice to go round on the Friday less crowded easier photography. Baby D is progressing well and if it still sounds like it did on a previous video still looking like a 37 it'll be great. Can't wait for it to be seen on the mainline.

      Glad you enjoyed the video!
It wasn't particularly well publicised, but in the leaflet handed out to visitors they said they weren't approaching it as a full heritage 'gala', but more trying to emulate the roundhouse open days of the 1970's. Given fuel costs and loco availability, it still made for a great visit.
